Tips for Magcro (No-CP)

Hey all!

I'm looking for some pointers from Magcro experts out there. I've been having a blast on my Stamcro but it's just SO simple to play. I'm itching for some Magicka action. I've tried a ton of builds but nothing seems to perform for me.

I've tried the typical Crimson/Vate/BRP/Mala cheese build which seems to be the most effective but still meh. I've also messed around with the soul magic proc build which is interesting but as soon as any stam class charges me I'm done. Outside of that seems to be what's left of the harmony crowd using resurrection when they manage to get 300+ ult to seal 1 kill.

I come from a MagBlade background so I'm used to getting shafted in PvP but it just feels like MagCro has even less options to work with.

So anyone who's having fun with their Magcro, what's your build? What's your playstyle in BG's and group PvP? Where do you see Magcro compared to other Mag classes?

As for comparing magcro to other mag classes, its damage tool kit for damage is pretty lackluster compared to other classes damage. You have to really build for damage, as in wearing sets that boost damage, be it with procs or spell damage/max mag.

I’ve been running a critical strike build. Healing is strong and damage is consistent.

Innate axiom, oblivion foe, ring of pale order, 1 ice heart precise staves, thief Mundas, spell power pots. It’s not great but not terrible. I keep resistant flesh on my front bar. And I use as many class abilities as I can aside - race against time, regen, soul trap, soul harvest ultimate (aoe explosion morph)

Edit: I only play no-cp / battlegrounds btw

NO CP / BG:
Icy Conj / Vate lightning front bar (BB+boneyard+colossus "burst" bar) / BRP frost backbar (ranged Impulse morph as spammable + survival / kiting bar). Harmony jewels (Malacath + 2 trainee), Chokethorn.

I feel like without the boneyard gimmick theres no point playing the class over another. A nice upside of the build is that once your DoTs are applied, everything you throw out is undodgeable. ~16,5k pen with a sharpened staff.

Mag+Spellpower+Detection pots (Argonian is nice for hobo "tripot" effect and stacking + % heal effects actually make healing effects relevant even with relatively low spellpower) to ruin cloakers' day even more if BRP ring isn't enough

I think the class really shines at healing/support, but most people dont find that rewarding. For damage dealing its a lil bit clunky / too "hit or miss".

One tip I would offer to anyone playing a Magicka Necromancer in PvP, especially if they don't have other characters to fall back on, is put together a healer setup and learn how to play it. As it stands right now, Mag Necro's offense is completely carried by proc sets, and if those ever get nerfed without some pretty major class changes/fixes happening at the same time, the class will be right back on the trash heap. You could probably play a stat-based build in duels and do OK, but in "real" PvP, the offensive toolkit is just too janky and unreliable.

With that in mind, I've played the following offense-oriented setups in PvP lately:

Winterborn (only on front bar), Torug's Pact, 1x Skoria, Malacath Ring, Arena Destruction Staff (BRP or Vateshran) on back bar.
Syvarra's Scales (only on front bar), Oblivion's Foe, 1x Skoria, Malacath Ring, Arena Destruction Staff (BRP or Vateshran) on back bar.
Oblivion's Foe, 2x Skoria, 2x Trainee, Malacath Ring, 2x Arena Destruction Staves (Vateshran + BRP).

The first setup is the only one utilizing 5 light armor, which the extra resistances on Torug's Pact help with. Both other builds are a minimum of 5 heavy, which I would generally recommend for Magicka Necromancer. Some of the light armor passives are nice and all, but the class isn't really suited to being a glass cannon.

I would also recommend running the Atronach Mundus and mostly or entirely sustain enchants on your jewelry. Magicka Necromancer's sustain is hands down the worst of any Magicka class I've ever played, but you can't really afford to ditch a proc set in favor of something like Lich or Amberplasm (especially since the latter can't be back barred). If you don't mind chugging potions on cooldown you could probably afford to back off the sustain a bit, but since I hate PvE and don't have deep pockets, I try to be somewhat sparing with my potion usage.

The first setup I mentioned has some pretty decent burst damage, but if there's a decent healer on the enemy team(s) it's just simply not good enough. It will also have more issues than the other two when playing around enemy pets and Engine Guardians, since your burst window can be completely ruined by those getting in your way. Overall, I think the second and third setups are better, though some classes/teams can be fairly strong against DOT builds.

In all cases where you'll only be using 1 Arena Destruction Staff, I strongly recommend the BRP version over Vateshran. Everyone likes to whine about the Vate staff these days, but the simple truth is that BRP is better in virtually every way, especially when it comes to dealing with stealthers. Unfortunately, my only BRP Destruction Staff is Frost, and from normal mode at that, so it stays on my back bar at all times. A Perfected BRP Fire Staff would be ideal for the front bar on both the second and third setups, if I actually had one. That might also prompt me to swap the Syvarra's Scales Staff to Resto for the back bar, assuming I could find somewhere to squeeze in Radiant Regeneration (and probably Resto Ult, especially for premade teams). But alas, I'm allergic to PvE and the prospect of potentially running Vet BRP a bunch of times for the staff just makes me want to log out.

The only time I run a spammable is when using Crushing Shock with Winterborn. If you have a Perfected (or even normal, I guess) BRP Fire Staff, you can use Elemental Ring as a bit of a spammable, especially on low health targets and/or those that are trying to dodge spam. Otherwise, I don't really think Magicka-based spammables are worth it for Mag Necro; it just gets too GCD and resource intensive to try and squeeze in things that will do very low damage, and you're usually better off re-buffing or support healing instead.
