Scared to try PvP for first time

Let's try to have a positive thread on the ESO forums for a change...

I am so scared to PvP in ESO. I haven't PvP'd seriously since level 60 in WoW with a frost mage. (Back when frost mages were so broken and trinkets still stacked.)

I tried a little PvP at level 50 in Rift and got absolutely demolished.

I haven't played GW2, or Tera at level cap, Or Neverwinter at level cap, etc.

I've designed my DK to be a PvE tank. Not a lot of damage dealt, but she is basically unkillable for PvE mobs. I also have a Templar that I've designed as a PvE healer. She is more deadly with a bow, but dies fairly quickly.

Basically, I don't think that either character fares well in a 1on1 setting. I ahve no desire to zerg but would like to do the quests in Cyrodil, meaning that 1on1 or 1on2, 3, 4...etc is likely.

So, is there any real reason to go try to PvP, or do I need a third character built for PvP only?

Group up with people from your faction until you feel more comfortable with the ESO PvP.

Just type in the zone chat that you'd like to group, there's usually always someone out there that will add you.

Much easier that way to get your feet wet (which you should be careful with by the way, lots of slaughterfish in Cyrodiil).

First - what level? And post an ESOHEAD spec?

I am only level 30 on my DK. (Already caught the raw end asking for low-level dungeons instead of vet in trading guilds. Sorry for being old and having responsibilities.)

Here is my DK build (Will want to ctrl+click)

I hate it when people say they are scared of pvp.
I mean seriously what you scared of??? A run from the nearest keep?? As that is the only death penalty.
You wont learn until you try and if you cant out of your misplaced fear? Jokes on you.

Run away from DKs, Vamps, Veterans, anything with a shield, and don't bother chasing Sorcerers. yw glhf

Speaking from personal experience... If you want more 1 on 1 types of battles, or small skirmishes, the best thing you can do is sneak around the enemies reinforcement lines. If you are careful, then you can pick fights with people when no one else is around. You also get to choose who you fight, so you can wait for someone closer to your level if you wish to do so. In addition, the target will usually be riding on a horse, giving you a free stun.

Oh, that's fine. You'll scale like most folks. Better, really, since a lot seem to be staying in the 10-20 bracket before hitting Cyrodiil.

That being said, your spec is leaning toward anti-healer and anti-caster. Stay near an allied group, target any opponent with an obvious resto staff, pull them with Fiery, then lock them in place with talons. Molten weapons to increase group damage before engaging.

Good info to keep in my back pocket. Thank you. =)

It's odd that you say that, as while I am questing I feel more vulnerable to caster mobs. Rarely does a melee mob do much damage to me.

So, even though I am a DK, run away from DKs?

When you're in a group, you become the 'yank it to us' member. Remember, you're not alone - you're there so it's easier to beat the healer down with less interruptions or getting surrounded.

That being said, what issue are you having with NPC casters? How do you approach them?

Nothing overt, to be honest. They seem to hit harder than any melee-type and a boss/miniboss caster is always more of a struggle than a melee-type boss.

Okay, keep enough magicka for a green dragon blood and always have a 1/4 bar of stamina. Ransack, deep slash, then swing away. Any channels are bashed.

I don’t think you need to build strictly for PvP to do well, but there are some things you’ll want to keep in mind while battling it out in Cyrodiil:
    • Find a good group with whom you can fight. Your odds of victory go up significantly even with just one more person at your side. This doesn’t mean you have to zerg, but I wouldn’t travel alone unless you’re a high-ranked veteran.
    • Don’t overlook sneaking. Yes, you may be fully clad in heavy armor and are accustomed to charging headlong into everything, but sneak is still a valuable tool and everyone can do it (and do it effectively, mind you). Use it to avoid other zergs, gain better positioning, or get the drop on someone.
    • If you are not yet a veteran, come to grips with the fact you will die. It’s going to happen, and that’s okay. Pick yourself up and move on.
    • If you have a shield, use it. Similar to PvE, blocking can literally save your life in PvP. It gives your friends more time to assist you and for healers to heal you. Also, shield bash puts out respectable damage. It’s the one skill you have which allows you to block and attack at the same time.
    • Have some ranged attacks. There will be times when advancing into melee range simply isn’t smart or even possible. How you do this is up to you. I like using the bow.
    • Never assume an enemy is alone. See my point about sneaking; your enemies will be doing it, too.
    • Everyone can break out of CC! Use the dodge-roll to escape from immobilizes and use the break-free (left and right mouse buttons simultaneously) to shake off stuns. Remember, both these maneuvers require significant amounts stamina to perform.
    • This last part might sound cliche, but I still think it holds true: Be humble. Stow your ego and realize you might not be able to take everything on. Pick your battles, retreat when needed, and regroup rather than blindly retaliate.

    Have fun out there.

Very good advice. Thank you for taking the time to type it up. =)
