IGN scores ESO a 7.8

    I know World of Warcraft was rated under 50% on many rating magazines at launch. Moral of this story? Don't trust the ratings of a MMORPG the first few months. It took WoW like 6+ months to get a score above 80-90

    I imagine the ratings will fluctuate quite a lot to start.

    I know my rating of it has been, first days of pre -release I would have said 8-9, last week I hit a low with all the issues I was getting and would have said 5-6, but its slowly climbing again for me and at this moment would say around 7.

    This game certainly has potential but it defiantly has not had one of the smoother launches

    7.8 rating is actually very good for an mmo and I am happy that IGN gave TESO that high a score :)

    TESO Fun-fact 1: It takes to kill 119,050 mudcrabs to reach level 50
    TESO Fun-fact 2: There are 61 million items in the game

    I have stopped long ago to really care for reviews. I read them, but don't base my decision on them. I absolutely hated some games that were given high ratings (turned out that those ratings later were lowered by the magazine / site) ... I take a look at metascore ... but that's it. With my fanboi glasses on, this game is a solid 9.0. Without these glasses, I'd still say it's an 8.0. IGN does not seem to be too far off ;)

    What really grinds my gear, is that most reviews compare the graphics of TESO with Skyrim. C'mon, seriously? Are people that daft that they think an MMO will have Skyrim graphics? Seriously? In my book, that tells a lot about the integrity of the one reviewing the MMO. You don't compare an MMO's graphics with Single player graphics, it's 2 complete different things, it's common knowledge that MMOs sacrifice some graphics to cater most PCs so they can maximize their potential subscribers. How about something realistic, how about comparing TESO graphics with every other MMO out there, hm?

    When you do that, the story is vastly different. The only MMO I've come over with this complete and good looking graphics, would be The secret world, despite its gameplay, the graphics there are really well done.

    I've read a lot of reviews around TESO, and most seem to judge the book by its standard of not being Elder Scrolls and don't have Skyrim graphics. I don't care about the character as I read the review and don't care about the numbers, it just pisses me off that an MMO are judged by its merits of graphics and how much it's Single player Elder scrolls or not. There are precious few reviews out there that judge the game by its standards of being an MMO, how they stand against other MMOs, how good/bad they are compared to other MMOs and whether or not this is a well-build MMO. No, they judge it by how its single player is. Seriously, reviewers, get your act together, judge it as an MMO and not as a bloody single player. But then again, I've lost all faith in reviewers these days, both for films and for games. They've lost more or less all of the integrity in my eyes by not managing to convey why this is a good/bad film/game.

    Maybe if you're talking about the techniques used in displaying a 3D world on your monitor through a video card, then ESO has good graphics >>for an MMO<<. Obviously many other single player titles have far more powerful graphics engines.

    But, if you are talking about creativity and design that creates a living and engaging world, ESO fails. Its flat, unimaginative, and claustrophobic. Even LOTRO did better. I haven't even come CLOSE to thinking about taking a screenshot in this game. Its just boring and its just not beautiful.

    Why are people complaining about a 7.8? That's a high rating...what rating did you want them to give? A 10? Sorry, for an MMO it's too stripped down barebones features wise and would not be able to achieve 10 and there are still bugged quests and some impossible to complete which have been for the past week.

    Yes yes I know you did everything no problems at all, but the rest of us had the bugs.

    If they would add more optional standard features I would like this game more and I'm sure their score would be higher as well.

    Also if we were allowed to stay grouped with our friends at all times regardless of what story or quest we're on then we would be great as well. Feels way too single player friendly and not only friendly but forced for a lot of quests, MMOs shouldn't force solo content on anybody, it should be optional, if you want to do a story with your friend then that's fine, if you want a challenge and prefer to solo it then that's fine too...options.

    But yeah a 7.8 was a good score for this game, not sure why anybody expected higher, was actually higher than I expected from IGN, I'm wondering what gamespots rating will be, not like it matters but it is interesting but I'm going to guess between 7-8.

    Completely biased towards certain companies and games (EA and ActiVision come to mind).

    I can't take anything said on that site seriously.

    Have you read the comments people leave on there?

    It's like they are in competition with Youtube to see how many idiotic replies they can get in a short space of time.

    I'd probably give the game around an 8 right now. I enjoy playing it a lot, but it has a lot of room to improve, and things to fix. It's the first MMO in a long while that has me actually exploring and paying attention to a story. In fact, over 10 years of MMOs (starting with Shadowbane in 2003) and I don't think I've ever really paid attention to quests as I do in ESO.. which really should be the point of an RPG, but somehow I never get sucked into the stories and am usually a person to skip through quests and just do the point a to point b.. kill some things grind without reading everything.

    So, the whole story being amazing (to me), and all the little things in the game that are funny/fun.. exploring being rewarding, crafting being useful, and just the overall enjoyment I've had while playing it.. well it likely would have been a 10. Deducting 2 points for bugs that have not been game breaking at all for me, and that they've been putting patches out frequently for, would bring it to an 8. That's just my view though, which is what's great about reviews, they're opinions.

    IMO, GW2 and RIFT had better reasons for exploring

    MSNBC is a left-leaning news outlet here in the United States. It was created to be a counter to Fox News, which highlights conservative view points (though to be fair to the network they do illustrate left-leaning view points too, but not to the same extent).

    Just to clear that up for you ^^

    I have to disagree on that one, per example: http://bildr.no/view/aU9zMVFF

    What I found enticing about that scene, is how the light fractures on the leaves in the tree. Sun flare, sun spots and distortion of the picture at times of bad weather and just generally how alive the world seems is part of the whole concept. I find the world a lot more alive than in many other MMOs I've tried - such as wild life and birds around the world.

    Not to mention the soundscape that frames the whole lot together. In general, I strongly disagree that there's anything wrong with the graphics in this game, especially taken into consideration the other MMOs out there. How many can proclaim that WoW has beautiful graphics is to me something I can't understand. There you talk about flat, unimaginative and boring graphics, but I guess that being WoW it gets additional 10 points added to it just for the name.

    Fair enough, but I disagree entirely. I didn't explore in Rift at all. I may have mindlessly ran towards a Rift I saw spawn, but I never just set out and explored.. ever. Same for GW2. I used the guys with the telescopes or whatever to find hearts I hadn't filled up, and skill points. I was always running somewhere with a destination in mind, which I wouldn't call true exploration. That isn't true for me in ESO. I also didn't at all pay attention to the quests in GW2 or RIFT.

    You have to keep in mind this is one reviewer's opinion, not the site as a whole.

    Most of the time when I do see a bad review or opinion about ESO it's because the person wanted the single player game that was/is to follow Skyrim with multiplayer support, not an MMO set in The ES universe.

    So many have failed to distinguish between the two. This is not Skyrim multiplayer, it's an ES MMO.

    Ign like all mags are worthless for reviews. They almost never play the games they review in any kind of depth.

    My personal rating for ESO would be about 7, except for a couple of glaring game killing problems. The bots and spam and the terrible group questing reduce the game to unplayable for me.
    The number one rule of online gaming is now and has always been, Never play on Patch Day.

    Yea, these scores are actually a bit higher than it should be. Meta critic user score seems to be the most accurate.
    Winter-Time
    by Robert Louis Stevenson
    Late lies the wintry sun a-bed,
    A frosty, fiery sleepy-head;
    Blinks but an hour or two; and then,
    A blood-red orange, sets again.

    Before the stars have left the skies,
    At morning in the dark I rise;
    And shivering in my nakedness,
    By the cold candle, bathe and dress.

    Close by the jolly fire I sit
    To warm my frozen bones a bit;
    Or with a reindeer-sled, explore
    The colder countries round the door.

    When to go out, my nurse doth wrap
    Me in my comforter and cap;
    The cold wind burns my face, and blows
    Its frosty pepper up my nose.

    Black are my steps on silver sod;
    Thick blows my frosty breath abroad;
    And tree and house, and hill and lake,
    Are frosted like a wedding cake.

    Tbh I would expect the console review to be higher, given that launch should be more bug free. In fact, I may just pretend that the console review is the actual score. However, given the current build 7.8-8.3 sounds about right.

    Its even better when most of them were raging in the Force/Joe threads at how they are not real professionals and a bunch of other reasons on why they shouldnt be taken seriously.

    Now, ign hate aside, an actual professional site rates the game less than a perfect 10....yet the excuses continue to fly in.

    That list of website ratings just makes me lawlz. INC "those sites suck" comments to any site that rates it lower than perfect. Oh wait, there are none. So we'll start seeing "review sites are not to be taken seriously, only your opinion matters" comments.

    With that said. I love the game, but I'm not as blind to the problems and history lessons as the rest of the raging defenders. I do forsee a higher rating in a few months however if they get stuff straightened out soon.

    Why even bother with review sites? let's do a little assessment.
    Next to each review look at the score and Agree or Disagree

    Call of Duty Ghosts IGN: 8.8
    Guild Wars 2 IGN: 9
    Mists of Pandaria IGN: 8.7

    Call of Duty Ghosts Meta Critic: 73
    Guild Wars 2 Meta Critic: 90
    Mists of Pandaria Meta Critic: 82

    Now compare them to your own opinions based on your own specific criteria.
    I guarantee they do not compare to individual site reviews. The point I'm making is you should be the judge of if a game is worthy or not, at the end of the day you pay the £40, $60 etc.

    When was the last time you enjoyed a game and the reviews of that game bashed the game to the ground?

    Play the game and judge for yourself.
