The Prophet and Elder Scrolls (spoilers)

I can't get one question out of my mind. Maybe it was answered somewhere in dialogue, and I just missed part of it.

How much (or at all) the Prophet was into reading Elder Scrolls. Well, he is Moth Priest-like and blind, but…

He is Varen. So was all this Moth Priest cover story just a cover story and he had his eyes removed by torture in example, after being imprisoned in Coldharbour right after Soulburst OR he was actually thrown across Tamriel after a Soulburst and found by Moth Priests (as he states himself first about his origins) - and was actually reading Elder Scrolls himself, and only afterwards kidnaped by agents of Mannimarco. Or any other options?

Maybe someone has some insights/evidence on that

The story he gives rings true. The soulburst scuppered his memory for a while. His only cover story was likely saying he'd forgotten his name. Even then he wasn't a brilliant liar because he tells you in the first vision that you're going back into his memory. This sort of gives the game away that he is Varen long before you officially find out.
