I'm very new to MMO's but have played the Elder Scrolls series so know about crafting etc. I am completely floored by the vast crafting system in this game though. So what do the experts advise? Should I just concentrate on improving my combat skills or is there also scope to become really good at crafting with the same character? I'm concentrating on Alchemy at the mo but can't help dabbling in all the others!

He is right....but you can still level a crafting skill.....just do not put points into it when your low level. It is very easy to put too many skills into a craft in the lower levels, making it very hard to level your toon. I would say level your crafting skill, and wait until level 25-30 before you put to many skills into the craft, use all you skill points on your toons powers/weapons/armor and what not.

RylukShouja✭✭✭As someone who has a crafter with too many points in crafting skills, I agree with the two replies. Put a point in the extra research slot skill when you can, and if you make your own gear as you level put points in the tiers to keep up with the mats you find in the world. Other than that most of the points are convenience, and you will come across more than enough skill points later in the game to skill into those, too.0 -

Only do crafting if it is fun for you. It does make things easier but it not a requirement. Alpha_Protocol✭✭✭A well planned (and executed) character build costs approximately 56 skill points and a lot of patience to fill both bars and ultimate by level 50.
If you are buying skills willy-nilly you will spend far more points than that.
If you're disciplined you can put the 6-9 most important crafting points in one profession while leveling.

I should have been more specific. Yes, I meant dont worry about spending skill points at low levels. I would suggest taking the hireling and 1 point into the research when they are available, if you can spare the skill points. Definitely do the researching and deconstructing to level them up though. Agree with him about the lvl 25-30 range.
Find a skyshard map and make sure you get them all for the areas you are in. Cyrodiil has tons too.0 -

wayfarerb14_ESO✭✭✭You get traits by researching items but you have to research each trait for each item. So unlocking the sturdy trait on boots will only work on boots, not on gloves, robes, helmets, etc. That's why you need to start researching NOW if you plan on unlocking everything. I planned it out so I'm focusing on researching for weapons and armor I need for my current character build. Since I dual wield and prefer medium armor, I'm only researching one-handed weapons and medium armor, though I will research a heavy armor item if I don't have any researchable weapons in my bank.
The research tab is the uppermost icon to the farthest right.
Not only do traits give you awesome stats, they also unlock the ability to use special forges in the open world that have even awesome-er stats (like +100 armor)
Researching doesn't require any skill points until you've leveled your crafting skill enough to research two items at once, so it's something you can start doing right away. Just keep in mind that the research time doubles with every trait you research on a specific item (the number one reason you should start now).1
