An Unknown Error has Occured

No issue for the 1st couple of days in game, (or throughout beta,) and all of a sudden, I'm getting kicked from the game back to the login screen with the error I wrote in the title.

It has happened as quickly as 5 seconds in, up to 10mins of playing. It's quite frustrating.

Welcome to the lucky few, the ones who ZOS dont talk about or acknowledge. Good luck in getting this resolved, unfortunately this error started for me 3 beta sessions ago, and within the first instance of leaveing coldharbour on beginning of 5 day access, and still zos do not even admit the fault. All i can suggest is keep raising tickets, multiple people in multiple parts of the world are now suffering the unknown error, and still no resolution, some have had success through using a vpn, try that, but thats as far as i can go as advice.

I have disabled all addons, and the problem has occurred only once more since. (Yesterday evening.) The frequency of the error when I first reported is no more.

There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger for the error in-game, and I can not recreate it intentionally.

Ditto. Having exactly the same problem.

I'm running an i7 with Nvidia graphics card. I made it through three Beta sessions without any issue and played early access without any issue. Today when tried to log in, it downloaded a 50MB (approximate) patch and I now I get this error every time I try to log in. It occurs every time at the same point - just after the login screen as the game is trying to load (spinning circle at the bottom right corner). I happens about 5 seconds after the login screen goes away.

On the login screen, it says I'm running version eso.live.1.0.0.962841

I'm having the same issue, except I get into the game for 1-5 minutes and it either takes me back to the log in screen or brings a report window up.

I have an update that I hope will help others.

When I was getting this error, it was due to a connection issue. I moved to a friends house and used their internet to connect without any issues. I then went back home and used my regular connection and I connected to the game just fine. Either there was a change on the server side or somehow connecting from a different point fixed the problem. The problem and solution (for me) all took place within a couple hours.

I have nooo problems connecting to the game..and playing for the 2-10 mins I get before the game kicks me out...I have tried everything on the forums as a fix...and I mean everything...I have sent the pm requested by the dev's post above...I have sent in numerous tickets...seems like today it's worse than it ever was...I have been told that this issue is being worked on...I called my ISP and they pinged me and told me that my fiber optic line was working fine and there's nothing they can do to help me...no..it's not my graphics card...I have a nvidia titan..yes the drivers are all up to date...yes all my windows updates are up to date...I flushed my dns this morning and reset my router...I have port forwarded the ports listed to this game...I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the game twice...I have repaired it like a thousand times...I even tried battleping..thank goodness it's a free trial...I put eso.exe as run as admin permanently...I'm hooked up by two networking cards...one with an ethernet cable and the other wifi...and yes the drivers are up to date on those as well...the only thing I think it could be...is that there is a packet loss issue somewhere in the route that my connection has to take to get to the server...and I'm not quite sure that can be fixed? I know that at least on my end it can't...I hope they figure this out soon...I really like this game otherwise...

Have you tried pinging their address? Do you have Time Warner? No one seems to be finding a common ground with these Unknown Errors...

This is unbelievably frustrating. ZOS, can you please confirm you are working on this issue with a priority?

No I don't have Time Warner...yes I've done a tracert to the game server..the IP being posted on another forum post...I have been told that their advanced tech guys are working on the problem...I guess i just have to be patient, but I would really like to be able to play the game : (

On a funny note...I have, in the last couple days experienced a somewhat amusing occurrence when I log back in after being thrown out...which I detailed in another post...I end up falling and screaming through the air only to land in the strangest places...

I would like to confirm what Duyo has said. I downloaded essentially what is a proxy server, called WTFast and can confirm this got me straight into the game right through my dumb ISP restrictions/whatever the heck was going on to drop my packets through their network. There is a 30day free trial (honestly, whats the harm? its free..and no im not here to just advertise for them). it is 9.99/mo after that. GL all, hope to see you in game soon, if atleast just for the next 30days.

The proxy is working because you always log in over the same connection (the Proxy). However there is no reason why our own connections shouldn't work. The real issue is that TESO is not accepting if you log in with changing IPs which is basically happening with many WiFi connections. There is also a forces change of IP when zoning, which is why the most kicked out than again.

Lioben, just to clarify because what you are saying makes sense:
The ZOS server does not accept dynamic IP addresses from "our" side. So whenever there is an IP address change like a Zone change this causes problems?
  • NorthBound
Most of us are forced Dymamic IPs based on our internet provider service. If this is the case, they need to work around to allow revolving IPs, as I have gotten in hardly ANY time in a game in which we are paying a monthly fee for. I hope maybe by the time this is fixed I can get level 10.

So, if it is a problem with DHCP/Dynamic IP addressing, that may explain a great deal. The first few days of playing, I constantly got the message of 'need to check e-mail and enter in the security code' because my IP address changed, and therefore I was a different 'machine' that needed to be verified... despite logging in from the exact same computer every time.

Now, it makes sense, but it is still very unexpected, because almost everyone uses DHCP of some sort. Setting the game up to dislike that, would be very unwise and bad approach. I will try out the WTFast thing for 30 days to try and give ZOS some leeway to fix this, hopefully it will work, but if ZOS hasn't gotten this fixed soon, I may be looking at trying to get a refund or something.

30 days free isn't exactly 30 days free when you have to set up a subscription that is taken out of your bank immediately (even if they give it back eventually, that is still bad policy to do that. The rest of the MMO's out there right now do pings of 1 Cent, not the full sub price), and when the 30 days is spent having to use a proxy service just to be able to play the game? Nah... ZOS, get this fixed, this is getting very old, very fast... seems every day comes with a new, "What the heck did they do this time?!?"...

WTFast is only claiming to REDUCE lag spikes, disconnects, and cut latency in half or better, so I would only have had to re-log in like 30 times today instead of 50 or more. It was also taking up to 2 min for NPC dialogs, containers to open, crafting, etc.
During beta I told myself, hey it's beta, now I just feel stupid for buying the product as I couldn't help wondering about the whole megaserver concept at the time.

I haven't changed anything on my end because sometimes the game plays really well and is very engaging but I have about 3 weeks left on the free 30 days and can't see throwing good money after bad.

Battleping solved the issue for me, so yeah it definately has something to do with our connection.

If the reason for This unknown error/not able to log in With a char -issue...... Not to forget the initializing text, which stays in loading window eternety. If these All are because of My 'poor and unstable' internet connection I Wonder how come I'm able to play
Like WoW, FF XIV With no problem at All.???

I have now done every possible thing to try and fix this on my end and I am still getting kicked out of game every 2-30 minutes. It used to be, 'An unknown error has occurred.' Now it is, 'An error has occurred. Please wait a few minutes and try again.' I am unable to maintain my gear because I end up dead most of the times I come back. Last night I was on the mages guild quest in Eyveya, and on the final boss I was disconnected 6 times. It isn't fun having to fight with all broken gear. I barely ever die to my own mistakes and I need new gear every single quest or I have to dish out 1000's of gold every level.

Customer support has been even worse. For those that don't know, online customer support is through emails and each email shows all of your correspondence so far on this ticket. Three times now I have been directed to repair my game and if that doesn't work to run this diagnostic tool. Customer support is either too lazy or too overwhelmed to scroll down half a page and read the problems of the ticket.

Subscription cancelled. The game is unplayable.

By the way every other MMO I've played and every other multiplayer game works flawlessly on this connection.
