Now? Has combat significantly changed since 2017? What happened? Why are the forums on fire? The game was in a really good place before Morrowind (I never played it).
What's going on here!?
I thought this game was on a good trajectory and improving! It was great last time I played!
Devs touched things. They were not gentle.
Did they entirely rework the combat system from the ground up or something?
Not yet, but they seem intent to. Racial passives were all changed, which I personally didn't see as too big of a deal. But they then started doing some massive "rebalancing" by setting standards for how much damage class skills should do, then they started swinging the ratio of those standards all over the place. Dot damage exploded, then was dramatically nerfed. Then it kind of rebounded, but who knows because they're nowhere close to finished. It is fatiguing people who have to re-gear with every patch.
They tried to rewrite the group finder from bottom up and instead nuked it from existence. They put on event after event to attract new players, but haven't invested in the game's infrastructure to support them. So their data center looks like Chernobyl, people can't log in, lag/stutter just standing still, logouts from porting with wayshrines, etc. Meanwhile more and more glitz appears on the crown store, which never has a bug or glitch. It seems they're just trying to cycle in new players to unload some $$ for a fancy mount and then get out to make room for a new batch who aren't sick of paying for broken software and services.
I did notice that! Before Khajiit got +% extra crit and reduced stealth detection on two different racials. Now it's all crammed into one racial and they get bonus HP, Stamina and Magicka. That was kind of neat, felt like a buff?
Yeah, the racial changes weren't bad at all, in my opinion - with some exceptions (cough woodelf cough). Actually I didn't mind most of the other changes either, though I'm not particularly fond of DKs slinging dookie all over the place. It's the rate of change and the scale that is hard to process. Even then, it would have been tolerable to me if it didn't come combined with huge performance issues side by side with times square marketing campaigns that serve only to stress a broken infrastructure further.
Putting the salt aside, here is my honest assessment - wait. Check back from time to time and see how things are going. It's the only reason I'm here, after having not logged in for weeks. If in a year from now the game is still operating, it can only be because they've resolved these performance/stability issues and worked through the majority of the rebalancing. You see what a dumpster fire the forums are - people are fed up and if something doesn't change I don't believe there will be anything to discuss 18 months from now.

That's a shame. Last time I played (Before Morrowind dropped) the game was in a great state and had fixed a lot of the technical issues and looked like it was on a great path.
First thing to do is remember most the people that enjoy the game spend their time playing it. The ones that no longer enjoy the game spend their time here in the forums being toxic. That is a generalization of course but worth considering when you read the opinions offered.
I have about 300 champions points, and 6 level 50's, but I am honestly lost. I have no real idea exactly what to do. I'm not in any guilds, I don't really know anyone, but I like the game. Not sure where to start or what to do. I'm subscribed to ESO+ because it's worth it IMO.
Where do I start again?

Aside from all the doomsday sayers. Yeah some big changes are still planned for the game and they essentially recently reverted a power trip change from a previous DLC so that they could scale everyone back and take a new look at things.
They didn't like the way combat flowed on every class having the same abilities to they are working on fixing that so your "class" feels more like your class and less like "2 class abilities and 10 not class abilities."
PvP is in a pretty terrible state now due to server issues and the overall rework of the damage methods; I'd agree with some of the earlier people in the thread about straying away from that and not getting invested until they finish their planned changes and we get to see where they go with it all.
PvE feels about the same some new buttons but overall not really all that impacted but animation cancelling is definitely a bigger part of DPS now VS when you played (LA weaving is super important). If anything just join one or three or five casual guilds and just do Trials; explore the world. Nothing really massive has actually changed since you left other than some new zones and a few combat tweaks.
Getting into guilds and finding them has been made immeasurably easier and so joining the community is a far less tedious task than before.
Oh and the crown store is more voracious and packed with garbage than ever. Skill lines, skyshards, etc. Just convenience crap that no one really needs but they gotta offer it to entice cash cows.
Welcome back!
First of all, the game is not the "dumpster fire" that some people on the forums would have you believe. There have been people saying that ESO will fail from the beginning, but 5 years later we are still playing it.
There is lag in Cyrodiil and the group finder failed when high volumes of players (what else is new).
The combat team made too many changes in the past few months and we are still not sure if they are done with the wild swings of nerfs and buffs (again, what else is new).
But...
The new zones look great, dungeons are fun, trials are fun (when they don't crash), and some of the quests are well written and entertaining.
There is even still fun to be had in Cyrodiil sometimes.
If you enjoyed the game before you will still like it, and if you hated it before you will still hate it. Give yourself some time to get used to the changes though.
