Illusion Staff

Reading through one of the Frost Staff threads, a question came to mind: Why make Frost a tanking weapon, when the Illusion school of magic exists in the lore and does useful things? Illusion historically includes spells like Frenzy, Rally, Demoralize, Paralyze, and Silence, all things which sound like they could be turned into a staff tanking skill line.

IF they do a DLC that includes Spellcrafting, I hope they will open up several of the schools. Additionally, include 1H + rune, and other magicka weapons, so that we can finally get something of variety besides a staff.

It is a rare mind indeed that can render the hitherto non-existent blindingly obvious. The cry 'I could have thought of that' is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn't, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too. - Douglas Adams

    sure, new stuff, why not?

it'd be nice to have a weapon entirely dedicated to utility, something different that actually changes how you play. as it stands, picking a weapon or "playstyle" doesn't really change how you play very much. you're still just upkeeping your dots, spamming your spammable, keeping your buffs up...who really cares if you're magicka or stamina?

I love the idea of magicka tanking, but I never liked ice staff because it's a destruction staff.
I've thought over what staves would be best, and I think Illusion makes the most sense simply because illusion magicks work by manipulating the mind: "Oh man that stick he's got is harder than steel! I probably won't be able to do much to him!", it also comes with, as stated, CC like abilities to be able to taunt enemies to you, stop them from moving or attacking or other things tanks often do.
Some time ago I even drafted up an entire skill line for a tanking Illusion staff; it would probably need some revision to effects and such, but overall I (obviously) think it's better for magicka tanking than using a destruction staff for tanking.

If they made a tanking specific staff it should be Alteration if anything.

I agree. I don't want to lose Frost Staff as a tanking tool, and would rather both the tanking and DPSing options be opened up further and better controlled. But if they did add Illusion, I see no reason it should be exclusively for tanking. Illusion is an extremely robust school that lore-wise can drive someone to fight, flee, reduce or enhance their combat abilities, even drive them insane (or otherwise, to death). We've already seen that something as ambiguous as a combat cheer can heal (Vigor).

And from a post-launch development standpoint, it makes more sense to create a broad weapon that applies to more than a single set of players.

It sounds like fun but I think bosses are immune to most of those things. It'll be hard to find a middle ground where it's useful but not too useful.

Alteration staff fits better for the tanking theme, but in general, yes... I am for adding new staff types for the other schools of magic.

I would have to go with the Illusion staff being a cool thing but not for tanking.

Staff could cause creatures hit to be attacked by those on their side for one attack that would be equal to the damage the staff would put out. For example:

Illusion Staff does 1125 damage (1125 Shock Damage)

Illusion Staff hits the struck creature for the 1125 Shock Damage (Or whatever the enchantment is on the staff)
The struck creature then attacks the closest nearby ally for the damage or 1125 (Which is equal to the staff damage itself)

This adds some randomness to the attacks and makes it fun to watch a Goblin, etc... turn on their team...hahaha!

Also, if it is a single creature it takes the full damage but they appear to hit themselves with an attack in their animation.

Let me know what you think.

the Illusion school has specific set spell effects, including a specific type of spell for forcing enemy aggro (frenzy); it wouldn't necessarily be random

I understand that and it could be a focus on the creature hit to be the one attacked instead. I just wanted to make sure that game balance would not be thrown off with the staff.
