Why do bites have to be free?

Vampirism is a gift, sure it doesn't have to be free, business is business I won't hold it against people for wanting to make a little extra gold, I do It for free tho, as an elder scrolls vampire addict, I see all vampires under lamae bal as my kin, and those I bite are to become my new family, you Can't just buy family.

Personally, I think bites should be free. You get the ability to bite again anyway, so why charge for one bite? If you’re really that desperate for gold, go stealing. Do the Dark Brotherhood contracts and the Thieves Guild dailies. You’ll get more gold doing that.

That and it’s just nice to help someone without having to take from them in order to do so.

I'm genuinely curious about the logic involved in this. I saw someone in zone chat ask for a bite, and the only person available to do it was busy but said they'd do it but since it was interrupting them and out of their way they were asking 10k, to which the asker agreed. Immediately, first one and then a bunch of people jumped on the would-be biter, calling them all sorts of names and being generally hostile and angry that they would dare charge for a bite and insisting that bites should always be free. I've seen this sort of conversation many times over the past year, and no one ever answers me when I ask in zone chat: Why is it different to ask for gold for a bite than it is to ask for gold for Skyreach runs, or mats, or something that you stumbled over in a treasure chest?

I know people who bought the bite in the crown store, way back. I also know people who farmed *hard* for the special spawns to earn their bite the hard way out in the wild and are very proud of that accomplishment. So why is this worthless compared to an accidental find, or some time spent picking up a few nodes, or running content with someone to help them earn xp? The bitee is basically asking to have an entire skill line shared with them. Why is this worth less than someone's higher CP level in Skyreach, or someone's luck with a chest?

(Note--within guilds I see a lot of bites given back and forth to guildies, but I also see a lot of items and mats and gold and carries given freely, too, so that's aside from this "random request in zone" thing.)

It's just considered bad practice because Vampirism and Lycanthropy have spread sufficiently through the community that you should always be able to find atleast 1 kind stranger. That's why people jump on the people selling bite.

It used to be acceptable to sell bites when the game was still very new because Lycnathrophy and Vampirism were extremely rare, and so getting somebody to give up that precious 1 bite a week was worth paying for.

It's just not the same now, there's no reason to pay extortion level gold.

IT's a bit silly you can give mats and have somebody craft you anything in the game for a mere 5k, but when it comes to bites which take 10x LESS work, they somehow ask twice as much. Bad practice/etiquette. That said if somebody will pay, it's their choice.

personally I'd hop from zone to zone, knowing somebody will eventually help.

    LMAO, savage

On the other hand, in guilds there's usually a person willing to bite you for free. Have done it, have received it.

But in zones, if is a tip is fine, 10k that's even more than when I started playing 2,5 years ago

I bite guildies for free but don't look down on anyone that charges because it's a convenience and not a necessity and having a charge can reflect that. For example, my chars got ww and vamp the old fashioned way, seeking out the bite from npc enemies. This is always an option if someone doesn't want to pay gold or crowns.

Edit: my point being, someone charging for a bite is never a good reason to be nasty to them. Want to badmouth someone for overcharging? Just take a trip to any guild storefront. You'll have so much more to work with there.

Just kind of petty to charge people for something that is actually free and plentiful. If you need 10k direly then you should probably uninstall the game.

You simply ignore them. If someone is willing to pay for a bite that someone else is selling, then that transaction is between them. No one else's opinion matters. Their interjection as you describe is the same as homophobia. As in they're attacking two consenting people for agreeing to an exchange together (monetary or otherwise).

Would you give someone like that the time of day? Then ignore them in zone chat. Or simply block them.

I've never charged for a vamp or wolf bite nor have I paid for one. I've even spent hours of my time running around looking for spawns and still don't feel the need to charge. It only takes a few seconds and 1 button press to give a bite so why not help someone instead of being a *** about it? I just don't see the point or feel the need to try and take advantage of others in a video game...

If anyone needs a FREE vamp or wolf bite then find me in-game and I'll hook you up. PC/NA

They don't "have" to be free. It's just usually there are plenty of people willing to share their fangs for free so most people are used to it being that way.

I used to charge for bites (though never 10k, that sound excessive). But I don't anymore. But hey, if you can get 10k for a bite more power to you. I suggest sending whispers to the interested party and not responding in zone chat. That should keep you from being harassed for charging.

I have always given out bites for free, but the reason I asked this question was because I saw a guy get gangbanged in zone chat for asking for gold when he said he could stop what he was doing and travel to meet this person but it would cut into his limited time. He got absolutely reamed and I could not understand the frothing venom that people jumped him with. It wasn't like "Hey, I got you over here for free", no one even *offered* to help this person. They just started in with "don't pay for that! Don't pay him!" and personally attacking the guy that asked for gold.

I don’t have a problem with people who sell bites. They have to go out of their way to meet you at the shrine so I don’t see the problem. It’s one of the few items from the crown store that you can “obtain” in game and undercut ZOS. I’d rather drop 10k gold on a fellow player than give ZOS any amount of undue crowns.

I don’t think it’s right when people spam chat with offers to sell all their junk, but then someone who WTS a bite gets slammed. I feel sorry for the amount of heat they take, just to make a little extra gold, once per week.

Bites are worthless now, they use to have some decent value since they were hard to farm but I guess time and ZO$ ruined that. I see nothing wrong with asking for gold especially if someone is willing to pay but I guess A LOT of vampires must waste their weekly bite.

I got vamp & ww bites for free from guildies / friends I raided with regularly either in pvp or pve. So if someone needs a bite, I give bites for free as well. I have like 5 vamps and 1 ww toon now. I always try to trade my biters gold but they have always refused. I guess the bites don't have to be free? But it doesn't cost you a significant amount of time nor money to give the bite away. It only takes a long time if zos gives you a long ass loading screen again to port to the shrine.

Back after launch they was expensive as they was rare.
Some of the started killed the npc to force other to pay the inflated prices, this created an backlash there its common to give bits for free while crafting cost gold.
And its no lack of vampires and werewolf's anymore removing the rareness.

Supply and demand. Someone wants to sell and someone willing to pay? What's wrong with that?

It's like getting upset with a taxi for charging you a fare because just yesterday your mate took you to the supermarket for free.

Tipping is and should be encouraged, but charging is honestly pretty exploitive to newer players.

Let's all take a moment to imagine what in the blue hell would possess someone to use this horrendously poor analogy.

This and as its so many vampires and werewolf around its free. Granted WW was not much used before last update but think plenty had it on an alt and just never used ultimate.
