Apparently Sil never made any Clockwork/Fabricant birds. Whyever not? They'd be at least as usable as the Skeevaton design, could be faster in some circumstances and wouldn't pose a tripping hazard.

✭✭✭✭It's harder to make flying things out of metal since it's denser than flesh, skin and feathers. Most metal used in CWC seems to be ferrous or copper alloys, which are quite dense, not aluminum or magnesium which are up to 3x lighter and thus usable for making flying machines. The parts are also bulkier, with little evidence of thin sheet or lattice type components which will be much better suited for bird like automata. They have smaller internal volume/weight per airfoil area, and thus can fly more readily even if not optimized to the same degree as birds. In fact on Earth insects were the first flying life forms, even if there were far less advanced than birds, dinosaurs and mammals which latter took to the skies, but their size was limited compared to the latter.
