What's the point of motifs?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm curious what the point of motifs is. I thought that's what they meant when they announced transmutation, not trait swapping. I'd love to be able to choose what I look like, as long as I already have the style I want unlocked. Cuz a lot of the BIS gear in this game looks awful

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Motifs are for crafting your own gear in a certain style. Since crafted gear is... Sub par at best, motif collecting is mostly a hobby; a time and/or gold sink.

If they ever do add a re-style/transmog/whatever the duck* you want to call it system that doesn't bind gear to you unless it was previously, then the overall price of motifs and crafting would go up substantially so you can have BiS gear that doesn't look like total ship*.

It is different things for different people. For me, I enjoy the challenge of acquiring them all. Some aspects of this game, I will never be a completionist. However, for motifs, I actually do have a chance at getting all of the ones that are available in-game. For the ones that I cannot get via drops, hunting them down is part of the fun, itself. Have had some good conversations with guildmates, just by inquiring about finding a specific page, too.

I am a "filthy casual", at the end of the day. I will not be running most veteran content in the foreseeable future, if ever at all. And that is just fine with me. For what I do in the game, I have no problem getting by in my crafted sets - and I can pretty much look however I want, because one of my master crafters is around 80% complete on motifs, and creeping closer to the end goal every day.

Supposedly the more motifs you know the better chance you have of getting master writs, so theres that.

Atm I think crafted gear is in a great place. you have 3 crafted sets that are usefull in pve hundings, julianos and nightmothers. In pvp eternalhunt, shackelbreaker and seducer also see use. In pve you might even craft a helemet/shoulder now on some staff builds.

They said they would be working on a transmogrification system, so i guess this will still be a thing, just not with this patch.

Plenty of crafted sets are used heavily.

Plus they did say a transmorg system is coming

A lot of great answers above me ... I'll add that having full motifs learned improves your chances of getting equipment master writs.

Crafted sets are getting more relevant again after the most recent HoTR patch.

But, I mostly like having my characters look nice while still being relevant in combat.

I was hoping they were working on a transmog system, but then they announce this transmutation thing and I think that's their idea of transmog. They will probably never do proper transmog because it will take away from the store.

    Same.

Several of the crafted sets are decent stat-wise and I can make them in the style of my choice.

thought that was reserved for glass, collect bits to then pay for RNG to laugh at you. The others are only a somewhat-irritating abomination.

its annoying keeping up with motifs, esp with the crappy drop rates of buyoant armiger, i dont even bother. not to mention militant ordinator which is the new akiviri makes another expensive endeavor that i dont have the drive to farm ap or spend loads of money on either. then they drop 3 more motifs, all from stealing yay..

ill collect them slowly, i spent so much money keeping up with motifs up to ebony, silken ring, and mazzatun that i dont bother.

Yeah...and they just added the MW and SotH (I don't think these were in the loot table before) motifs to the MWs. Just got a Morag Tong yesterday and a Militant Ordinator a few days ago. Fortunately, I haven't seen BA yet - I don't have any of those pages and it certainly wouldn't be worth buying one just to complete a writ, unless that writ was worth 250+.

I hope that if/when they introduce transmog that it's not locked behind vet dungeons/trials or PVP. Don't mind that transmutation is, since the system seems designed to alleviate some of that grind. I craft my own gear, so I can get the traits I want (and style for that matter, but it'd be nice to be able to change the style if I find I don't really like it and don't want to have to craft an entire new set).

If you have the motif you want and are not interested in master writs then sell the motifs you get. Really not a big deal.

I almost always use at least one crafted set and one overland/dungeon set so my toon looks good, is more than formidable for all content and I spend less time farming for gear and more time playing the content I enjoy most. Collecting good looking motifs = Win/win for me.

They are still doing transmog. I couldn't find the thread, but one of ZOS said that transmutation is different than Transmogrification... That they are putting out Transmutation with the Clockwork City DLC (you need to have access to Clockwork city to use it) Transmogrification will come at a later date, as it is still in the works.
