Armor and weapons crafting

So. I'm a nearly grandmaster crafter. Minus motifs (really need to work on that), mainly at the 9-trait level. Annnnd I can't really figure out why I did it. All of the best and most used armor sets are gathered from grinding, and crafting sets don't even hold a candle to these sets. Which is pretty counter to how TES has always been...reward the crafters. So my question is, is there something I'm missing? Maybe crafting sets are the greatest thing since sliced bread and idk what I'm talking about, or maybe I spent many hours grinding these skills for no real good reason.
Yes, I do heartily repent. I repent I had not done more mischief; and that we did not cut the throats of them that took us, and I am extremely sorry that you aren't hanged as well as we.

— Anonymous pirate, asked on the gallows if he repented.

Nope, there is no point to being a Master Crafter unless you are a completionist. Like me! lol

I decided to make one of my characters a master crafter in woodwork and clothing (still a work in progress). I have only really ever crafted sets for a new character that I created and leveling (make 5-set pieces with training trait). But for my crafter who is CP 230 I use sets that I have farmed instead of crafting my own sets.

However, I dont regret it because it allows me to improve items using significantly less tannins/resins and allows me to acquire resins and tannins from deconstructing/refining and hirelings. This means I can power through normal dungeons to get the item with the trait I want.

It has also added a new element to how I play the game and that is to wander around and collect mats and explore the world of tamriel. Its just something different rather than just running around killing things and questing all the time (I'm aware you don't need to be a master crafter to do this, but is more rewarding when you refine mats and get the good stuff).

IIRC they removed the crafted gear upgrade with Imperial City DLC update. It used to be if you crafted your gear you'd get a whole bonus level of stats on your gear. Now crafted gear is on par with dropped gear.

HOWEVER... Crafted gear can guarantees a desired trait and even though a lot of goods sets are not crafted, there are some that are niche to builds. Twice-Born Star is a pretty good one. Also a lot of DLCs have crafted armour sets, so you set yourself up for the future. I myself am going to look to buy Orgnum's Scale pieces soon.

Clever Alchemist is another one that some people choose to use. Allows for some of the biggest burst damage in the game if paired with other sets properly.

If you've been in PTS or have been reading the PTS forums, the gear changes coming in Update 15 could make some crafted sets relevant again ... more to follow in the next month of PTS testing I'm sure.

Yeah, especially Twice Born Star with the major buffs to most Mundus Stones...

I hope the new update makes crafted sets at least viable. I'm starting to think I'm wasting my time with crafting, since everyone says to use dropped sets. I don't want to (and will not) grind for dozens of hours for something that looks goofy just to be able to compete with others.
