Suggestions for staving off false accusations in PVP

I had to spend $35 to change my gamertag and character name because of zone chat in PVP - I was accused of "spying" on the AD. It was some kid who randomly choose my name in zone chat and proceeded to ride it to the end to accuse me of something I didn't do. After that, I was no longer invited to any groups to run PVP. I asked why and was told because I was a spy, I acted like an "ass" when I tried to defend myself, etc. (Because, you know, I am supposed to be nice and not frustrated when some kid accuses me for no reason).

So, ESO and players - what kind of things can we all do to avoid being blacklisted like this because someone thinks its funny?

Whoa, did you not report him for flaming you? That's bloody awful!

It's a shame there are such a*holes about. The internet and online gaming seems to really bring them out. Just satisfy yourself that he is probably some kid sitting in his bedroom whose balls haven't dropped yet! lol!

I'm not sure there's anything you could have done personally, but report the original troll... that's all I can think of.

Wow, yeah OK that defiantly needs looking at. If you have not reported this you should. I am always accused of being a spy when I actually never give anything away to either side, I just play all the alliances in the same map haha! but someone taking your name tag and running around with it accusing you of doing something you have not done is wrong on all levels, you should of taken some pictures ):

EDIT: might need to have some kind of username lock on accounts that lock the name to your psn tag or something

Yes, i did report him and the others who went along with him.

Still out $35 (24.99 to get the crowns to do the name change in game and 9.99 for the gamertag change).

Yes, I have seen this happen many times over the years on WoW. Ruining people in game for no reason at all. Time and money invested.

I didnt give him what he wanted. He randomly chose my name and kept pushing. Then 4 or 5 other people started with him. I asked them to politely stop, and they didn't. The group leader in the group I was in saw the zone chat and kicked me out of the group with no proof.

The next 3 or 4 days I never could get a group and finally I asked a few of the regular group leaders I used to get into why - and they told me because of that.

I don't know the zone chat has been really handy when players can tell you how many enemies are at a certain castle or which one needs defending fast ect, however this also can work backwards because if you do have a spy in the map then they just send that info to the others through their private chat or what ever, i know I have seen it and don't think that's fair at all ):

I didnt respond until the group leader decided to start grilling me about what the troll was saying in chat. I said to the group leader "no I am not a spy" and then he told me to prove it. I said in zone chat "please stop spreading falsehoods and then was kicked out of group.

    Had to?

Not buying it. Sorry someone seemed to target you, but you should have been able to build up a reputation well before the accusation, so anyone in your parties would realize how ridiculous the accusation was.

If you did lose your temper, I would suspect this wasn't just limited to the accusation.

Most people who change their gamertag/player name do so because they've burned too many bridges which can't be repaired.

Before pointing the finger at someone else, perhaps you should ensure you're not the problem which started the accusation in the first place.

Just advice, nothing more. Good luck with your new identity. Don't let your attitude muck this one up.

This. Not sure why you had to change your name and gamertag.

Is this something that happens only on consoles? I have never seen anyone accused of being a "spy" on PC/NA. (And I honestly wouldn't remember any names within ~2 hours, even if they did.)

Firstly, and crucially, do not feel forced into parting with your hard-earned money purely because someone in the /zone chat has decided to pick on you - never allow anyone you meet in-game or online in general, with such malicious intentions, have an effect of this kind on you. They're simply not worth it, and I find it really quite sad that you felt so pressured into dispensing with your money purely because of the inane nonsense being spouted by someone deciding to pick on you, for no good reason - at all costs, try to avoid this in the future.

Secondly, you have to remember that, at the end of the day, they're someone like you - an MMORPG enthusiast sat behind a monitor, trying to have fun in a game that they enjoy; granted, they might be being obnoxious, but you need to comprehend their circumstances as well. Perhaps they've been having a bad day or frustrating session, and the only way that they can release that anger is through venting it onto another player. Granted, that doesn't excuse them for behaving in such a way, and it isn't fair on you for their blame to be abrogated because they might simply be having a pretty rotten day, but instead of getting mad and retorting, (which can seriously reflect back on you, in nasty ways), remain calm and civil, and appreciate that you have no idea what they're going through in their life. Fundamentally, they're just someone sat behind a computer screen, who you will most likely never meet, and never hear of again after your brief encounter with them online, and hence they shouldn't mean anything to you whatsoever. This adds quite nicely onto my previous point - don't let someone so insignificant to you in your life yield such a profound impact, so as to force you to part with your cash.

Finally, and addressing the impact it has on your PvP experience - I would expect that this encounter would have been negligible anyway. People generally forget the names of others in /zone chat the moment that a name is engulfed by the monstrous, ever-growing scroll bar, and even in a day's time, I highly doubt that people would still deny you group access for acting like a "Spy". If, by some miracle, someone does pick you up on it, then laugh about it, and if they're being persistent and continue to accuse you with increasing force, just mention, politely, that it's simply a game - you can fight for as many Alliances as you wish in ESO, up to the grand total of 3. They have no proof - so what if you're clandestinely scribbling down notes of AD tactics on a thick, green leaf with a burnt stick? You can claim that it's field art  ! It doesn't really matter, and I'm sure that others will see reason, if not immediately then later, (as an AD main, I would find it hilarious, and joke in the /zone chat about you being a spy without excluding you from activities - these occurrences should be laughed at, and if someone's really taking it that seriously, all the more reason to chuckle).

I'm sorry to hear about what has happened, and you have our support. Next time, remember that the /zone chat in Cyrodiil is a dark, dark place, crawling with evil denizens that are all military masterminds and spend their time screaming orders at each-other nonsensically. It requires true training for protecting oneself against the Dark Arts to embark within the Cyrodillic /zone chat... :p ...seriously though, don't take things like this too seriously. Remember that, in your life, they hold no impact and/or importance whatsoever, and the likelihood is that this is how it'll remain. Remain civil, don't feel pressured into spending money because of their words, and if all else fails, come off for a few hours, (heck, it doesn't even have to be that long), and return - most people would have forgotten it by then.

I hope that this helps, and have a smashing week! Good luck on the battlefield - both the actual and the /zone chat, and I hope that this doesn't happen again in the future!

I am not going to address those who are commenting this was somehow my fault. While they are correct, there are two sides to every story, I have no reason to lie.

I may be fairly new to ESO but I am not new to mmo;s. This is nothing new as I have seen it happen since the days of everquest back in the 90s. Chats are always a toxic place, but when they become so toxic as to affect the game experience of another person (because you cant "shut it off"), then the game administrators should step in. People can be and often are VERT nasty - especially teenage boys. They don't think about consequences much less the game experience of others.
This is the first time it happened to me in as many years as I have been on an MMO. I asked the kid in a whisper why he did this and his response "I just felt like it."

I would have hoped by now after nearly 20 years of MMO's, there would be some sort of system to try to tamp this kind of behavior down. I guess I was wrong.
