An Error Occurred, Please Wait a Few Minutes and Try Logging In Again

This message (title) appears after trying to log into my character on the live server. I get to the character select screen just fine and then select my character (doesn't matter which one). The "requesting character load" box appears for a few seconds and then I get into the loading screen. After a few seconds on the loading screen the game freezes (unresponsive in task manager) and if I let it time out it kicks me back to the log in screen with the above error message. I can't get in game and don't know how to open a ticket on the website.

What I have done so far:
  • Renamed the ProgramData folder to ProgramDataBackup (no improvement)
  • Repaired the game (on my second try at this now)
  • Oddly enough I can log into the PTS just fine

I am running Windows 10 x64 if that helps.

If anyone knows how to fix this please point me in the right direction! Thank you in advance for taking the time to help.

The displayed error message implies that the game host or Bethesda network encounters a problem while retrieving the data for the character that you selected. That is probably not caused by a bug in the game client on your computer, whether it is caused in the game host on the Bethesda server. It seems more likely to be a Bethesda megaserver issue.

Using the Repair Files feature is recommended after any time that the game client crashes, or your session is spontaneously terminated, because the files might be corrupted as a result. But Repair won't prevent an issue from re-occurring. Also, Repair is only a temporary workaround perchance the game software files are becoming corrupted on your computer for some other reason, such as a bug in the OS or a failing hard disk drive. However, you would more likely have problems running the game client even before logging-in to the game server, in that case.

It might be more appropriate to post your message in the Customer Support - PC Technical Support forum:
