It's easier to be tanky and not kill anyone. It's more of a challenge to put out the dps.
I just play how I want. I don't conform to any metas or "right" choice. I build my room around the way I want to play and use the gear I want to use, same with skills. I may not be able to survive being mowed down by packs in pvp or put out insane burst damage, easy mode isn't fun. My builds achieve exactly what I want them to do and by doing what I design them to they are optimal for me.
When you start being a sheep and playing follow the leader you lose your identity and individuality. That's how it is for me atleast.

man, @AJ_1988 ...i hear ya - more than you could guess...i fought all the conform to the meta stuff for a year and a half...cuz, i just wanted to do whatever i wanted...
i had a breton stam blade, a redguard mag blade (who carried a bow ), a magplar wearing 7 pieces of heavy and carrying around a really cool looking 2H battleaxe, a sorcerer who used SnB...i had some seriously "unique" builds...all my characters either used the warrior or apprentice mundus stones...
i had a whole lot of "hybrid" builds and tried to balance out my attributes...and use both magicka and stamina to fight...
That "fun" stuff all worked okay in cyrodiil; however, when i went in to IC i would get my butt handed to me a bunch...
started communicating in and out of game with some much more competitive pvpers...to their credit - they were all very cool to me and no one came straight out and said i had my head up my butt - but, after a while i finally got the message...
if all you really want to do is zerg surf - sure - you can get away with just about any build - however, if you ever hope to survive in small scale pvp - you have to go along with what makes the most sense...
hurt my soul for awhile restructuring most of my characters - however, if i run into any chance encounters either in cyrodiil or IC, i can more than hold my own now...
final thought on this:
Hi @AJ_1988 ...that sounds very cool - and, most importantly - a lot of fun
templars are a blast and probably my favorite class to play...very forgiving, especially in heavy armor - which is great if i just want to zone out while pvping...
i have a orc stam based templar (wears black rose and dreugh king slayer) - he uses SnB on one bar (for melee) and a lightening staff on the other (for ranged fighting)...
one of the few characters i have whom actually prefers to fight close up in melee range...
it's funny - been playing the game a while now - when i do slot it these days - hitting other players and knocking them down with that javelin never gets old

I think it's more challenging to find a balance between the two.
Going all damage is easy, going all tank is pretty easy.
Finding ways to be survivable and still do damage...that's more fun to me anyway.
Just curious what people choose in terms of their playstyle.
Seems like there's a lot that focus on DPS almost exclusively, and swear by learning the mechanics of DPS and survive-ability even though they are squishy.
Others focus on sustainability almost exclusively, and though they almost never die they rely on others to kill opponents.
And others yet likely have different playstyles/views.
Which is the best way to learn and get better at the game?
Which is more fun?
