You should never gold out gear that isn't cp 160.

Yes gold gear is better the stat increase is huge you don't need too but if you have the gold and the tempers then go for it. Most ppl just use purple but I use gold sets and it's a big difference. You could just gold out ur wep for a boost to ur spell or weapon power. The people that say you should never gold out lower lvl gear are either poor or don't bwb pvp seriously.

Stat increase is not that big, especially under level 50 between gold and purple. IMO blue is fine for under level 50

It is nothing but pure waste to upgrade anything but CP160 gear to gold.
    NB enthusiastic:
    1. Woodhippie stamblade - DW hard-hitter / PvE
    2. Know-it-all elf Magblade - Healer / PvE & PvP
    3. Hate-them-all elf Magblade - Destrostaff AoE monster / PvE
    4. Cyrodiil-Refugee stamblade - Stamina Tank / PvE

    Go dominion or go home

The stat increase is huge? Is that compared to purple or white gear?

Purple is more than sufficient... blue is just fine too.

Does "poor" to you constitute everyone without millions of gold or hundreds of tempers to blow?

How would you define "serious" bwb pvp?
    For the Covenant!
    Svvord - magicka NB
    Lavv - magicka DK
    Povver - stamina NB
    Psylint - stamina NB
    Yelruc - magicka Sorc

Aside from the quality of the gear, the gear level is very important. If you are level 30 wearing level 10 gear, your stats will be greatly reduced. Ideally your gear will match your current level or be within about 4 levels of it. The most annoying part of lowbie pvp for me was crafting all the sets.

A buddy of mine suggested a great idea. Craft a set of armor in 3 level intervals (training) of blue quality and keep them all on the character you are playing. Roughly 16 sets of armor ( i would do maybe like 3 sets at a time, plus what you wear it would take up 27 inventory slots) you would only have to switch out inventories every 12 levels this way, and you'd have a large xp bonus and be formidable for your level. Pair that with some scaleable tristat food you'd be a titan.

Try reading my post again I said most ppl use purple, and I think that's fine.
Serious bwb pvper has all the sets ready to go and when they out lvl from just pvping exp they make a new character having pre-made sets waiting for them at the right lvl. So if ur going to use these sets over and over again why not make them gold or purple with gold weps.

Tempers are not hard to get at all if you play the game and farm a few you can gold out one set 2 hours of farming per day gets me 1 gold set a week.

It's not a waist of gold if you use it over and over again

The OP asked is gold set better then a white set the answer is yes ofc it's better you could purple out and that's fine too but if you want the max stats possible for ur lvl then you would wear gold gear no one can say that's wrong.

Yes. Gear actually matters MORE in lower level PvP.

I used green gear and crafted my own gear as I went. Typically I did one set per material tier.

I also only have one toon, and so dumping point into crafting while trying to have enough for skills was challenging at first. But if you take the time to grab skyshards in everyone zone and do the quests. Skill point become less of a problem.

Whole ESO gameplay is about gear.

As for low lvl pvp, I would recommend to purple all your armor and gold your weapon. Gold armor sure gives benefits, but let's be honest, they are not THAT huge, however gold weapon does.
What you can do, is use Kuta in all enchant :) they are pretty cheap and works awesome.
