Why can't I animation cancel surprise attack when I light attack before it?

Not sure if I'm doing anything wrong here but I need some help.

Basically, if I use SA then block straight after it will animation cancel correctly. But if I light attack then SA and block again the animation won't cancel. It'll just carry on with the SA animation but I will also get the shield/block animation at the same time while doing the SA animation, which isn't good for my stamina.

Am I doing anything wrong here or?

    It's the whacky implementation to animations that were introduced earlier this year. ZOS wanted abilities animations to be seen versus bash animation being seen. However, if you do it right, all 3 points of damage will go through. Sadly, it is very clunky and a lot of times harder to pull off... It gets even more complicated when you introduce the typical lag of Cyrodiil.

    Animation cancelling is more difficult now than it used to be due to said changes with animations.

    Animation canceling has always been cheesy, with zero mention of it in game it's been defended as some how "skillful", or " a higher level of playing" but the reality was, it was easy to do and anyone could do it.

    Since the changes it's much harder to do and once you throw lag into it in some cases it becomes impossible. Although I tend to find it fairly easy to do with a Destro staff still, also a bow.

    Animation canceling is something you really have to get a feel for. It takes a long time, but before long you'll understand the exact second you need to let off the mouse button and tap the key.

    Course, as mentioned, if you have lag this will be demonstrably harder.

    If you know I to do any kind of animation cancel and still can't get it blame the lag.

    You also shouldnt animation cancel using block because your stam regen will drop to 0 and you will most likely miss a regen tick (stamina regen ticks every 2 seconds)

    On pc you can assign "interrupt" to a seperate key, allowing you to bash without using block. Consoles need this

    Pretty much this. I think it was around Thieves guild(?) where the animations were slightly changed. Things have been kinda choppy since then. Some people even made posts showing how weaving light attacks with a staff is now unreliable. It's not completely broken, and still possible to animation cancel, but it's not as smooth as it once was rest in peace.
