Caltrops/Alliance Points

Fairly new to the game, haven't tried PvP beyond trying to grab some skyshards. I really want to put caltrops in my stamblade build. Any tips for grinding alliance points and not looking like a fool in PvP.
PS I'm only level CR55, am I going to have a bad time?

You can equip a bow and stay at distance and just tag guys for your teammates to kill. You will earn ap that way. Or just follow the zerg.

So most of the AP come from player kills?

None of the CP531 folks are expecting a tough fight from a CP55, if you decide to go into a CP campaign, so you can't possibly embarrass yourself. But, don't set your expectations for yourself too high either or you'll get turned off quick. Hang back, follow a crowd when you can find it.

So maybe I'd be better off sticking with the no-CP campaigns until I'm a respectable level?

You might have an easier time of it, and if the goal is unlocking Caltrops you can accomplish that without having to play where you're very handicapped. Plus its a good way to ease into PvP on a more level playing field to find out things you might want to change if you decide you like PvP and want to continue.

I wish there was a "vet" campaign with the "non-vet" style leveling... Just run around naked and play, get in fights and not have to deal with CPs/gear, etc.

Without that, if yer a stam build, VIGOR comes first, and you could get some AP from group heals.. If yer a magic build resto-staff heals are quick/easy AP, and always appreciated.

    Easy fast way for AP.

Find a keep, use seige, either offensively attacking walls etc or defensively attacking people. You will get lots of AP just by using siege and you won't have to worry about "fighting"

I was able to gain 120,000 AP in 12 hours, not in a group, not zerging by using sieges during keep battles..

Join with a pickup group, or at least find a decent-sized fight then a) equip a healing staff and heal your allies that are fighting, or b) hit as many enemies as possible with ranged AOE, or better yet, with a siege weapon (FYI-Scattershot Catapults hit a large area) and you'll get AP from the kills. Option a will give you faster AP.

Being lower level, it's a good idea to focus on being a support player to a group, like use a lot of AOE and group-focused abilities, and/or siege weapons. You'll be a benefit and can hopefully stay alive longer. Also, fill lots of Soul Gems to rez players!

Lastly, buy wall repair kits with gold. When not in combat, you can travel to keeps and repair walls that have been upgraded. It's essentially buying AP.
