Spell Pen Champion Point tree?

Still not entirely sure how the new mechanics behind the spell penetration champion point tree works but am pretty sure I get the idea but thought I'd try to clear it up.

Previously this tree worked on a percentage of spell resistance mitigated?... but now it works on a number value of spell resistance mitigated by spell penetration?

If so... this tree seems to be almost worthless :/ 30 points into spell erosion would only ignore 1761 points of the targets spell resistance? Even at CP cap, I struggle to see how its worth me spending any worthwhile amount of points into this section, would much rather use 30 points elsewhere.

Anyone with any spell resistance value worth ignoring, such as 3+ heavy armour users/ sword and board users... would have such high spell resist 20k+, that reducing their armour to 18k for example, would literally add barely noticable damage to my hits -.-

Am I correct in my thinking?
Nirnhoned for the win I guess.

Since it is spell penetration, isnt it supposed to ignore spell resistance amd not physical?if so,yet again it is worthless, cause even if you can get 100 cp into this tree, you would ignore about 3k spell resistance,if im correct.Even if it ignored say 5k,most magicka builds have high spell resistance,a single nirnhoned piece can add 18% bonus spell resistance, now imagine that on a breton templar, with 1 nirnhoned legendary piece, and even some points into spell resistance tree...about 20k spell resistance...what can 3k penetration do?add 300 more damage to your concealed weapon for example?not worth it...

I did actually mean spell resistance but guess I phrased it wrongly, have adjusted original post to accommodate this.... but yeah that's exactly what I mean... it seems like they really didn't think the tree over properly when making the adaptation.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something about the spell erosion tree that possibly could have made it worth using. I guess I shall be keeping my additional points in elfborn and thaumatage.

The average DPS build running around Cyrodiil has 15k-20k Spell Resist while the average tank has maybe...25k-32k+

I forgot how much it was last time I checked, but I believe capped Spell Erosion was more than 5,000 penetration meaning you're generally ignoring 1/4th of someones spell resistance which is pretty good if you ask me, I heard somewhere that every 1000 points of resistance is roughly 2% mitigation, so if you're ignoring 5000 you're basically doing 10% more damage.

At the current CP cap its not worth stacking spell erosion but in the future you'll see alot more people using it

Your average medium armor user is running around in 13k resistances. Buffed with major ward, they're sitting at 18k. With a legendary nirnhoned weapon and 5 light penetration, they're still mitigating ~15% of all magic damage before CP mitigation and battle spirit are even applied. All medium armor users have 18% elemental defender minimum, because that's how you unlock the unchained passive. With 67 points into spell erosion, that ~15% resistance from armor and ward becomes ~10%. To give you an idea of what that looks like:

    16k Tooltip
    18% Elemental Defender
    No Spell Erosion
    5,588 Applied Damage

    16k Tooltip
    18% Elemental Defender
    67 Spell Erosion
    5,887 Applied Damage

right, looked on cp moment ago and redistributed 100 CP into penetration to see amount. 5281 armor/spell penetration you can have with 100 CP into piercing/spell erosion so not bad :)

My altmer sorc wears 2x heavy and has a nirnhoned staff. With boundless storm active he has 23k spell resistance and 19k physical resistance. Breton sorc could hit 25k spell resistance easily I think.

What are these resistances you speak of? Haha. I do just fine in Cyrodiil with 14k spell resistance and 7k physical. And let's not forget my crit resistance of 68. Not 68k, 68 total. This goes well with my 7 pieces of gold infused light armor.

Best defense is a good offense ... and some invisibility potions.

On a side note, I love to tell people this and have their brains explode that I'm one of the most survivable guys on XBox NA. Mist form is life.
