General tips for building a templar support-tank?

Hey all! I'm new to ESO, and have been levelling a tanky templar as my first character.

My goal with him is to defy the magicka Templar standard and create a survivable build with high health and mag regen. I welcome any and all advice, but have a few things I won't budge on:

a) I'm putting 50 or so points into health.

b) I'm going to use burning shield a lot. I know it's considered bad, but it sounds fun to me.

c) DPS is my lowest priority with this build.

That said, I would love tips that help me achieve those above goals. I don't want to stick to a build 100% until possibly veteran rank, so while build links are appreciated I'd prefer opinions on the following:

1) How do I get the most out of burning shield?

2) What are the best group support abilities, (from any tree). I plan on using these a lot in PvE

3) What specific advantages will help this archetype in PvP as opposed to PvE?

4) How little att points into stamina can I get away with as an Imperial by the time I'm at v16? I plan on only using it for block/dodge/bash/CC

5) Related to above; are there any stam abilities that I really shouldn't miss for use on this archetype?

6) And finally, what are the best ways to ensure good mag regen?

Thank you for reading! Like I said, I welcome any and all advice.

I'm by no means an expert. I only have a VR2 Templar. But to help point you in the right direction.

    1) Blazing Shield's strength scales only off of your Health and your proximity to enemies. To get the most out of it, you want Max Health, some degree of Magicka Regen/Cost Reduction and you want to stand close to your enemies.

    2) Group Support, I'd say: Blazing Spear, Remembrance / Practiced Incantation, also in a more general sense, The Assault / Support / Undaunted skill lines have a lot to offer your group as whole. War Horn and Barrier are the best "support" style ults.

    3) Blazing Shield is in a bad spot for PVP. For PVP if you want to tank, it seems that having decent mitigation and health regen are key. For PVP maybe consider using more of the PVP skill lines to get more of that support feel.

    4) No Idea as I'm not VR 16.

    5) Bone Shield from Undaunted is like the Stamina Version of Blazing Shield.

    6) Stacking Mag Regen Enchants and/or Cost Reduction Enchants. Additionally, you'll want to consider your % modifiers.

You'll get percent modifiers for Magicka Regen from: Champion Points, Minor / Major Buffs, Class Passives, Support Skill Line Passives, Being a Vampire (that also reduces your health regen though), Mage's Guild Passives, and/or your race.

Getting Magicka Cost Reduction is also a good idea. You'll want some combination of the two. In Magicka Cost Reduction it is important to note that % modifiers apply to the base cost BEFORE the flat enchants do.

When deciding if you want Regen or Cost Reduction, think about it like this. Cost reduction let's you spam abilities cheaply, while Regen only helps you every two seconds (when it "ticks"). So if you plan on casting less spells in a short period of time, Regen is better, but if you are the frantic button masher/in a WTF scenario, you'll want cost reduction.

    1) How do I get the most out of burning shield? It pops quickly because it's a relatively weak shield, which means you have to cast it a lot. I would definitely pair it with Channeled Focus for the extra magicka regen. You will need it.

    2) What are the best group support abilities, (from any tree). I plan on using these a lot in PvE. Repentance is your bread and butter - decent 10% full-time regen plus free heals and stam refills with any corpse. Cleansing Ritual is pretty nice because it boosts your healing output and gives group members a free purge if needed.

    3) What specific advantages will help this archetype in PvP as opposed to PvE? You won't be able to kill anyone in PvP with this setup, but you might live long enough to draw some attention away from your group so that they can win the fight for you.

    4) How little att points into stamina can I get away with as an Imperial by the time I'm at v16? I plan on only using it for block/dodge/bash/CC. I would suggest at least 10 attr points into stamina. You can get a lot of benefit from Repentance to offset the weakness of a small stamina pool. You will need more stamina though if you plan to use Caltrops. You can also enchant your gear with tri-stat glyphs, which are awesome, but Hakeijo runes are pretty expensive.

    5) Related to above; are there any stam abilities that I really shouldn't miss for use on this archetype? I really love Shuffle (medium armor ability) - it wipes off any snares on you which is clutch. Also, Major Evasion is SO valuable, and something that Templars specifically need; it's sad that this buff isn't baked into one of our class skills.

    6) And finally, what are the best ways to ensure good mag regen? Channeled Focus is a must-use for your setup. Also, you might consider using regen food to boost all of your recovery since you will be running with small mag/stam pools.

Just my thoughts, I hope it helps, and good luck. :)

well I haven't done much with blazing shield. to me it would be best for your aoe bar as single target it really is not worth it but I think it shines in aoe.
for support abils this is really depending on your group. if your healer is lacking put a heal down to help him out. if your heals are good then use blazing spears to help your dps get recorces to nuke.
this build will just not function in pvp well. but I did a Templar tank and had a blast pve and pvp with all into magica and health glyphs on my major slots and stam on my minor. never had stam issues. had to keep mana pots but no big deal I also used jabs with the magica morph and did good dps and self healing with structured enthropy ticking. I was vr 4? at the time and I had 31k hp 39k magica 12k stam. all heavy.
for your stam just do what I did above it game me more than enuff or pve. just have to be smart on your blocking. keep in mind I was self healing threw 90% of the dmg also so yea I just blocked what I had too.
the only stam ability I had on my bar was ransac.
magica regen you can use channeled focus and don't forget about pots. if your not trying to keep shield up 100% of the time you will be fine If so I'm not sure how to get that much regen.

Normally I'm not a negative nancy... but I have all but quit this game months ago simply because Templars are garbage. I wouldn't recommend even trying to make a Tank/Support build with this class. Its just not on par with the other classes. I've recently came back to see if things have changed anddddddd.... NOPE. lol. If you are looking to play a bad ass Holy warrior class then this is not the game for you. The Templar on here is similar in function as Tinkerbell was to Peter Pan. You cant be a Holy Warrior smiting enemies and defending allies on here. You just sprinkle some shiny fairy dust around until your light burns out.
I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then said I:

    "Here am I... Send me."

@Arbitrator - I anticipate an upcoming buff to templar versatility in the next major patch. But even if I didn't I just enjoy playing a tanky support. I'll make it work as best I can, even if it's worse.

    @Rugz - Thanks for the in-depth response!

The magic regen information in particular will be worth referring back to the thread for just to make sure I've covered all my bases.

@Solariken - Thanks a lot for the reply; lots of good info here. Based on what I've read I'll be picking up channeled focus, repentance, and various support line skills. I'll probably slot cleansing ritual pretty often too.

And don't worry; I don't expect to get kills in PvP. I plan to run with guild zergs or groups and throw out heals/buffs until I attract notice, then try to distract or wear down attackers.

I may try to go 8 stam and avoid caltrops, and though it pains me to admit it, (because I've ignored medium armor so far) I may invest in it for shuffle. Seems damn good for breaking root and letting me spam my spears.

Lastly I'm a provisioner, so I should be able to keep topped up on regen food just fine. Thanks again for all your help!

@deximasb14_ESO - That sounds like a sweet build... Kind of my polar opposite in terms of pumping mag instead of health, but it's reassuring to know you got by just fine with so little stam.

Thanks for the tips! The ability to gear this guy to any group or situation is the main reason I'm playing him, so I'll definitely be throwing out heals/ tanking / topping up DPS as needed.

Some great info so far, but I'd definitely welcome more, so don't hesitate to post any who have experience with this type of character!
