Oculus Rift

Maybe this is old news, but I ran across an article about new technology for 2016 and it mentioned Oculus Rift (Virtual Reality) being compatible with XB1. I did a quick search of websites and the forums here to see if anything was mentioned regarding TESO and OR compatibility and it looks like there's been some testing on it but most of the forums are old.

Does anyone have new information about it?

ESo (or any computer/xbox/heckevenwiiU game, really) is likely to be (somewhat) compatible with that line of tech, yes, at least to some extent.
But to actually be the 'immersive experience that Oculus rift can offer', you'd have to play in first person. And first person combat in ESO kinda sux. It's okay for goin' solo dungeons or maybe some base zones world bosses, But PvP and group dungeons are out of question.

...RP will be nice, tho'. so there's that.

If you want immersion like that with the Oculus, then Elite: Dangerous is the best game I've seen with compatibility. Granted it's a space sim though...
I have departed into the great unknown that is outside the game and the forums, and wish you well in your Tamriel adventures!

Sure...but I could adjust for some solo content. I would rather play OR on ESO than some other game I'm not that interested in just to have the experience.

Ok, I will check it out. Were you able to test it at a convention? Elite designed with Oculus in mind from the beginning?

I really doubt VR is gonna happen in 2016, they havent even started hyping. Christmas 2017 is my guess. Considering everybody is doing own VR-device, something just aint right.

The most immersive game for the Rift will be that Jurassic World looking game from Epic. Rustles my skivvies every time.

I think someone is making a great white shark VR game as well.

I have a mate with an Oculus, so we tested it on his machine :p And yes, it was designed from the start and is awesome. The sad thing is the content doesn't go too far :/

I tried the OR once a few months back. With Elite dangerous. It was awful. The headtracking is good, but the resolution............man what can I say about the resolution. The image is pin-cushion-like as if your eyes are pressed right up to a vintage 80's colour TV. I love 3D in games, but I'm sure not trading in my nvidia 3D vision setup for an OR any time soon.
Please stop making requests for game features. ZOS have enough bad ideas as it is!

I worked on making games for the occuls rift in college. I made a simple running game where you were being chased by a dinosaur thru a number of environments.

When we fell in the game, you actually almost fell in real life. It was rather immersive.

Then I was told the game was no longer mine and it belonged to the college.

Just so you're clear @gbsteve ... The oculus is "compatible" with Xbox one in the same way Samsung VR is "compatible" with Netflix. As in, you will be able to play games in a virtual room looking at a large screen.

    oculus-xbox.png

It is NOT compatible in the way you are thinking.

I imagine you will be able to play ESO in such a way... wearing the Oculus, looking at a screen which has ESO playing on it.

Players HAVE gotten ESO working on the PC with Oculus:

I don't think ZOS will build in VR support because... well.. I said it in a thread asking about PSVR

Personally, I don't see it happening. Mostly because so many other LITTLE details that would need to be fixed if ZOS were to support have yet to be addressed in the past 2 years... like...

First Person Mount Riding. it would be really weird to zoom out while in VR mode... we're also missing First Person Shadows which would require full body awareness, which ESO doesn't have.

And the BIGGEST issue woudl be the lack of Mouse Freelook in First Person. Try this sometime... go in third person, start walking and use mouse-freelook and look around. Your character continues in the same direction it was going and your camera swivels around. Now go into first persona and do the same thing with the mouse freelook button.

WTF? Right? doesn't work the same! First person Mouse Freelook should keep your weapons still while your view looks around, like over your shoulder, but ESO's first person mouse freelook doesn't do that. It just acts as an alternate first person look-around that rubber bands your view back to it's initial orientation once you let go of mouse free-look. In otherwords... it's useless.

And, as you can tell by the links I posted above.... all of these things have been discussed and just about outright ignored by ZOS.

What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

That makes a lot of sense.

So basically the Oculus would just bring the picture closer to you....so you see nothing out of your peripheral except the game, but not fully immersive in the way of being able to control vision in the game by moving the headset around.

The thing to keep in mind about playing ESO in first person mode with a VR headset, assuming they build in proper support for it, is that should be able to turn your head in any direction as quickly as you want to get a quick appraisal of your surroundings. This would be like playing in first person view on a normal computer with screens surrounding you almost entirely. So the complaint that you would not be able to PvP in first person or do whatever in first person sort of goes right out the window.
