Trying to balance Tank and DPS

The_1st_Dovahkiin
Hi Everyone!

In advance, I would like to apologize if this thread has already been posted before, I'm just looking for some fresh ideas that could help me out.

I just recently started PvP, I have been playing for a few weeks now, and needless to say, I am having a very difficult time adapting. Before, I was strictly PvE.

I am a Vet 2 Nord DK Stamina Tank. I love being a tank and helping my group out in dungeons and PvE events anytime I can. And whenever the need arose that I needed to help out with DPS, whether going solo or helping with a boss, I would use 2H to do some "less than ideal" damage, but it usually worked.

But in the PvP environment, I feel this completely shatters me. When it comes to fighting other players, I play a great defense role and can really take some damage, obvious since I am a tank. But when it comes time to try to take down a player, I feel like I am doing no damage at all. Using 2H as my primary DPS skill line, I was using engulfing flames as a debuff, then Rally into Wrecking Blow. And it seemed like health bars on players barely even moved. I was even trying to balance it with unstable flame for a good DoT, Igneous Weapons to deal some more damage with my heavy attacks, but it just seemed like nothing worked.

I know I am a tank role, and that's what I need to focus on, and I completely understand that. But is there some modifications or skill line changes I would be able to make that would help me push some more DPS when the time arises for it? Like dual wield or bow instead of 2H?

As I am new to PvP, I am sure it is most likely my inexperience that is hindering my abilities, I'm just not sure what to do for a good build that will allow me to tank and still do some decent DPS when the time comes. Any advice that anyone can give a new PvPer would be greatly appreciated :) Thank you everyone!!

Im a sorc tank and come across the same issue. Typically I try to shattering prison/liquid lightning for a decent amount of damage with crystal frags.

This is effective against: Dks and Templars. NBs, if they don't escape can be taken down too. Sorcs bolt completely evades my dps to such an extent that it usually becomes a stalemate. Templars are similar, except they lack an escape meaning even if it takes 30 minutes ill eventually win.

I have found even when I did try extending my dps, it was the same experience only I took more damage.

I'm thinking, the long wear them down method is really the most effective for a tank. I have a hard time seeing a tank having enough burst damage to get the results we are looking for. I feel we need to try and out resource our enemies.

Love to see some suggestions though :)

I have been experimenting with a couple builds myself . Atm running something akin to Lefty Lucy's fortress build.

What I found working nicely, are hunding-ashen heavy armor combo, rally, flawless dawnbreaker, warrior mundus stone. Dots, snares, executioner, reflect. I had around 3000ish wep dmg buffed, which is pretty decent.
Full stamina for buffing those stamina skills and vigor, and hp is still in between 28-30k, with similar resistances.

The current game balance favors DPS more than Tanking in pvp. Most tanks want more DPS, and most DPS players need 'just enough' resiliency.

So far the only "tank build" that works is the infa tank build thats a DK in full heavy perma blocking saddly. With how PvP is right now the only way to really do anything is to have the biggest DPS and the best survivibilty is perma block casting behind shield stacking or infa roll dodging.

ZOS needs to make changes to heavy armor and remove block casting if we want to see some more use for tanking in PvP.

Sounds good man! Yeah I am hoping there will be something we can try to get out of this rut.

I know exactly how you feel man, even when we try to extend our DPS, we just end up taking more damage with barely anymore DPS output, sucks...

I agree with the wear out method for sure, I think that might be the only option Tanks really have. I'm even finding that method difficult due to the fact I run out of stamina thanks to the no regen while blocking. Feel like I just cant win lol. Hopefully something will work out for us man, thanks for the input :)

Yeah his build looked pretty awesome, I just cant pull it off right now because of my low vet level and not enough CP :( Would love to try it though when I get there. Let me know how it works out man! Thank you for the input!

I agree 100% man! Hopefully ZOS can make changes to those in the future. Fingers crossed! Thank you very much for the input!
