is it viable to play magicka nb without magicka det? i barely started pvping so i dont have it, im running this build:
impale
lotus
cloak
sap essence
concealed weapon ( dual wield bar)

healing ward
crippling grasp
mass hysteria
shadow image ( resto bar )

as you can see i dont have a 5th resto bar ability.. so im asking, is it viable to run this build without magicka det? will grim focus do the job or not?

Its certainly viable. Prox det just makes it that much better though.

You can definitely go without it. I won't lie to you though. I does help in this really awful 50% damage reduction environment. I never really used it before and have been running it now to get me over the hump for burst damage. I find that it takes some really good timing to use correctly. Sorc combos are probably better. I wish the timer wasn't 8 seconds. 6 seconds would be a lot more useful....or maybe I just need more patience on engaging at the right moment. It does seem to break you out of stealth like healing ward does as well. I try to be behind the target or covered by terrain when I cast it.

Oh you definitely want double take on your bar. I got so good with it that I didn't even need a gap closer. Now that Lotus Fan is viable I have both but double take will get you in and out of trouble with a bonus dodge chance active for you.

Changes I would make (I'm a magicka nb):

here is how I run mine:

    DW Bar
Lotus Fan - you want this initial damage and CC
    Dark Cloak - obvious choice
    Concealed Weapon - obvious choice
Sap Essence - grants the 20% extra damage
Mass Hysteria - great CC after they break your Lotus Cc or Grasp CC/root
    Soul tether - huge damage

    Resto Bar
Magicka Det - replace with Crippling Grasp or Double Take
Healing ward - our only true heal
    Structured Entropy - buffs damage
Harness Magicka - helps you against magicka. You could go dampen magic; just as good
    Swallow Soul- great range attack
    Clouding swarm - awesome!!!

Cast Grasp if you have it, structured entropy, swallow soul, lotus fan in, concealed weapon, sap essence, concealed weapon, mass hysteria, weave light attack and concealed weapon

You probably won't even need to make it through all of that if you time the CCs correct (every 6sec) and you aren't jumping a player with all of their wards up.

Even without Det this is bursty

Swollow soul<---you need a ranged abilty to be balanced it cost less the 900magic and hit hard
Crippling grasp< no enemy can escape high dot damage higher the soul harvest and 8s speed buff this is great gap closers
    cloak
Fear <---- if not on your main bar its useless
concealed weapon ( dual wield bar)

    healing ward
Mist <use healing ward then mist for heal even under attack
    D -take<- you're not a nb with out
    shadow image
Piercing mark< enemy nbs are your bane this beat enemy stam blades

    ( resto bar )

Build i use very strong single target no aoe but you kill very fast

I've always wondered.... Why do people say you NEED double take? Especially as a magicka build? You have extra speed with cloak and concealed weapon, and you will likely have cripple on one of your bars... and you should always be keeping it up to keep the enemy snared and you buffed... so to me it has always seemed redundant to have both double take and cripple...

Yes it may be useful in certain situations but if you're cloaked you're usually "safe" and so why do you need the extra movement speed? Might as well put rapid maneuvers there if you use that logic

You always want to make sure you have an assassination skill on your bar for the crit damage passive!

20% chance to dodge is enough of a reason. You can dodge most attacks including spells.

While I do agree that the dodge is really nice... when I was magicka, I was very rarely out of cloak unless I was attacking, and that meant the other person needed to play defensively or he'd be dead pretty quick... I guess it has a lot more value in 1vX situations, or against other nightblades who have you marked... guess it just comes down to preference...
