Console: Should text chat be implemented with the IC patch?

I'd rather not have text chat thanks very much and on both EU & NA megaservers i never find much problem in Area Chat, yes you get the occassional idiot who thinks he's actually picked up Guitar Hero and tries to sing but mostly I hear people talking and helping each other.

Also it would be divisive .. you would have those who use Voice Chat and get on fine, then those who for some reason decided to play a game that before release on console was known .. to not have text chat yet still purchased it in the 'hope' they could get it added.

I doubt to many people research something that costs $70 prior to purchase. Most experienced gamers make assumptions based off game genre. Text in an mmo is about as standard as it gets.

Everyone i know who bought eso on pc said it sucked but i bought it anyways /shrug. Ironically the pc version is more suited for casual gameplay I have found.

I will say if there were a system to have this voted on by everyone upon logging into the game his argument would be blown out of the water and he would have very little left to stand on.. 83% would turn into 98% if not more of the gaming community.

Oh and anyone that knows anything about community polls are that anything over a 70% lean means A LOT!! As for every 1 complaint there are around 200 unspoken ones of the same nature.. <-- FACT!

    ^^^^^This

There is no doubt in my mind at least 8 outta 10 or maybe 9 outta 10 console players would support an alliance wide text based looking-for-group tool (similar to Warframe).

There was already a 95 page thread on this subject (that got shut down because cenrtain individuals that shall remain namless instigated trouble n there too much). There have been hundreds of one-off threads supporting this. This has all the support it needs. I cannot imagine why ZOS is ignoring us.

My next step will be emails to ZOS's parent corp, Zeni Media, and to the investors themselves (I'm sure they want to hear about all the guys quitting; that's lost income from the crown store, dlc, and word of mouth advertising).

Indeed. So for an MMORPG to be released in this day and age without text chat seems a bit of a oddity. Incidentally, Warframe has its own odd feature where you can't delete/reroll your character without making another psn account. But I digress....

Not to digress further, but there's nothing to "reroll" on Warframe. Each frame is essentially it's own character/class and they're all available to you. Why would you ever want to re-roll and lose all your in game progress?

    1) Voice chat can be improved in many different ways. If the game is going to constantly rejoin me into area chat whenever I zone the least it can do is place me into crafting/trading chat when I enter a crafting area and a LFG channel when I approach a dungeon. I mean 2.1 is supposed to allow for the group finder to use players from different alliances so why can't I talk to those players before being matched with them? Anyway, the current channel system is severely limiting and the least ZoS can do is innovate it just a little since they have made it the only option we have. An improved in-game indicator is needed to tell who is talking as well.

1b) You should be able to manually join the aforementioned channels as well and these channels should be clearly designated with appropriate titles/names.

    2) Push to talk should be mandatory in hub areas. If you enter a city and are in a public channel then you should be required to push a button to activate your mic. No one wants to hear your mom tell you to take out the trash, listen to your cell phone conversation, realize you have horrible taste in music, or hear your cough or sneeze.

    3) Guild channels should be able to be given titles so players know which channel is for what activity. Selecting these from a predetermined list is fine and it should include titles like Questing, Crafting/Trading, Cyrodiil, Off-Topic, Roleplaying, etc. If any title is repeated it just gets a numerical suffix placed after it, such as Crafting 2. Being able to add a password to at least one channel would be nice as well.

    4) You should not have to join a channel to see who is currently in it. Let's be honest, if ZoS is going to keep ESO voice-only then they need to have such basic features to save players time and make navigating the various channels as efficient as possible. Is John online? I wonder what he is doing. I see he's in the dungeon channel. I'll just send him an email or system message instead of joining the channel and talking over everyone, that way he can get back to me when he has time. Since John is busy I wonder what Jane is doing. She's in the Cyrodiil channel. I guess I'll join to see if they have room and if so, which server queue I should join.

In review, ZoS gave us the most basic voice chat system available. It has none of the feaures required to make it worth using over PSN/XB1 party chat. And this same voice chat is supposed to allow hundreds of players to organize their efforts in real-time. Simply adding text chat would solve many of these issues but there is no reason for ZoS not to improve the voice system until that time.

Don't even get me started on the utter lack of moderation for voice chat.

    Short story time.

Well, I started playing Warframe way back when Loki was one of the starters. Picked him because space ninja and reasons. But I ended up disliking him and didn't find him fun to play at all. I ended up quitting soon after. Months later, I told a coworker how hard and frustrating Warframe was. He told me about the newly added tutorial missions and how much the game had improved since I last played. I ended up making an alt psn account and started over from scratch. This time, I picked Volt, and he was awesome sauce.

16 ranks later, he has a place of honor in my stable of frames :)

Oops sorry for the off topic-ness...um... Yes to text chat on consoles, please.

I thought that too, but console players are the easiest to exploit. We dont have the vast variety of mmos that pc has so they can get away with stupid decisions sometimes. There are what ... 5 or 6 mmos on both console platforms? And sadly enough with how bad eso is right now with all their lacking features, it is one of the better mmos on consoles...

On pc, this game would not have lasted a week without text chat.

Woah! i think you may have just solved this whole thing! Forget chat box, we need pocket pagers! and it wont be "lore-breaking" if it's a little dragon in your pocket that buzzes when you get a page. then you bring out your dragon to read the message. there will be a Trade dragon, Zone dragon, Area dragon, Group dragon.

Anyone offended by the pocket dragon can just smoosh it so it doesn't clutter up your UI...i mean inventory....

I'll be honest, the amount of bad decisions that are made because developers think console players are primitive since they use a couch/chair and a large tv is amazing. While some of us do play in the living room on the biggest tv in the house, most of the people I know use monitors and desks just like they would on a PC. Are developers really that out of touch with the console market? Perhaps ZoS needs to get together with Jimmy Kimmel.

Anyway, I agree that other than for optimization taking away features just because the game is on a console is almost always a bad decision. Perhaps that is why FFXIV:ARR is so successful on PS4 since they treat the players with respect and found a way to make the PC systems work on consoles instead of insulting them by taking away basic features (yes, text chat is as basic as it gets). Think about the lack of add-on support on consoles and you might understand how little ZoS thinks of console gamers.

They don't need any numbers, they won't understand them, Why even bother giving us numerical values in the skill menu. Might as well just say "a lot", "not as much", and "just enough". When you attack an enemy you have no idea how much health they have or which skill rotation will be optimal. Do you open with a light attack, cancel with a skill, bash, setup a heavy attack or casting time skill and then execute? Or will the mob still be above execute range? I mean you honestly have no idea how to approach a situation without such basic information, especially for named unique enemies. But don't worry, you won't be able to read any important information from the couch and scaling the UI is way too complicated for ZoS to program (it was honestly one of their excuses for not having text chat on consoles).

I remember I had an mmo rug addiction at some point and would look at all mmorpgs, if it didn't have text chst, would not even downlpad...and if I downloaded it without realizing it didn't have text chat, I'd instantly undownload or barely try it for more then 5mins, even if I waited hours for it to download.

Eso is lucky that they didn't lose any of their console players...yet...

But I'll be honest not having text chat is annoying and I'm slowly going to quit because there is no mmo aspect for me. I just group with almost like AI it feels. And then I go quest with no one...no social life which is why I plan to quit soon if eso says nothing about text chat yet

I agree completely, the sterotype that console gamers are mindless brutish and lazy is rediculous and insulting. Imediately when I found out eso lacked text chat I said to myself "I bet they think we are too dumb or too lazy to use it" ... Then I saw their reasoning as to why the6 did not add it "couch play". I felt insulted. I have played other console mmos and used text chat with ease. Sometimes I was laying down, sometimes I was standing up ect.

I am hoping zos will openly appologize for insulting their player base, and add these much needed features so this game can be a lasting succesful mmo, much like how FFXIV did.

On ESO Live that aired 8/14/15 ZOS told us this:

"For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic."

This episode can be watched here:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gJU0_8rqM8kk

Not having "anything new" implies that the last info they gave is still accurate. The most recent info we have from ZOS about text chat comes from a Reddit AMA on 6/11/15.

"Is it possible we could have a text chat? Yes. Will we? I don’t think we can safely say one way or another."

Just before that they explained their reasoning.

"Text chat wasn’t added to the consoles because of a number of factors. First, many of our early tests demonstrated what we already knew: it can be cumbersome to type in a text chat with a controller, especially when time counts. This is why we decided to make sure VOIP was integrated into the game from the beginning and why we added our quick chat feature. Second, displaying text for an environment such as couch and TV requires larger fonts. Having small, almost unreadable text is very problematic. A chat window, typical on a PC, just doesn’t translate as well to a living room environment. Having a chat window that was useful, as in legible, meant it was so big it was covering up lots of other elements. These and a few other factors meant we concentrated more on VOIP and Quick Chat. They were the most reliable and best means of communication in the living room environment. "

The original source for this info is here:
    http://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/39gv5r/the_elder_scroll_online_tamriel_unlimited_team

To my way of thinking they messed up by not adding text chat while simultaneously doing a great thing by adding voice. It's become painfully clear now text chat is needed for mass communication and voice is needed for instant communication in small groups. So, we show our support, they fix it by adding text chat, and all ends well.

To my way of thinking they messed up by not adding text chat while simultaneously doing a great thing by adding voice. It's become painfully clear now text chat is needed for mass communication and voice is needed for instant communication in small groups.

I find it funny and odd that they said they "focused their attention on VOIP" and eso has probably the worst implementation of voice chat in any game I have ever played.

They maybe spent all their time ironing out the proximity based chat. IDK. It could have been much cleaner for sure. But nothing they could have done would enable voice chat to connect me with thousands of other players looking to group. For that they where counting on their group tool but that thing is garbage! They have said they are working on fixing out to work better but don't they know over 90% of they players will never use that again because of their bad experiences they had trying to use it the first time. They need to shoe in text chat ASAP. Their game is going to die before they get this fixed. The release of IC will give them another month on life support but seriously this baby is gonna die real fast real soon. This stuff is so obvious, jeez.

The game's central concept of "PvP in PvP areas and be safe in safe areas" needs to stay the way it is.

I honestly don't understand the reasoning for not having text chat support, it's ridiculous. To say that console players wouldn't be able to use it properly is quite frankly insulting. Text chat has been in every mmo on consoles to date and it works flawlessly. Having it would make grouping so much easier because the LFG as far as my experience goes doesn't work in the slightest.
It's honestly making me not want to play anymore because it's as others here have said, i feel like i'm playing a single player game. Thinking about going back to Final Fantasy A Realm Reborn to be honest.

    For the record.

On ESO Live that aired 8/14/15 ZOS told us this:

"For those asking about text chat on console, we do see all the requests for it (on our forums, social media channels, reddit, etc.), but we don't have anything new to share about the topic."

This episode can be watched here:

So, we show our support, they fix it by adding text chat, and all ends well.

    Holy crap. Seriously. Holy crap.

Did ZOS do any research? You know, like looking at other MMOs available on consoles? DCUO and FF:ARR specifically....you know, two MMOs available on the PS4 that have working text chat?

I bet the DCUO and FF:ARR devs are cursing the fact that they added text chat....you know, because it's so cumbersome and there are font size issues to address.

While I appreciate your effort please do not assume that just because ZoS stated they have nothing new to share that the status is the same as it was previously. This is a logic error. You can only take the statement made as it was written so it is as close to a no comment as you can get.

To be fair the stream's text chat was flooded with inquiries about the status of console text chat so the response was made as a brief acknowledgement to stop us from asking further, not as a planned statement.

I agree, I am also seeing a trend with this game, we lack basic features that are expected in mmos, such as text chat, tradeing windows between players, inspecting other players, auction house.... and then the basic features we do have such as voice chat .... are missing basic features... we cant controll peoples volume (just a general controll that raises or lowers everyones volume, and not specific individuals), there is no in game mute option, there is no ignore option.... I got to block someone on psn to ignore them in game....

All that makes me look upon this company in a negative way. I love TES games I love Fall Out, and my love for those games is whats making me hold on a little longer in hopes that they will right their obvious wrongs.

And adding text chat would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

I do hope the fine folks @ZOS Remember this thread come December/January when the servers start looking like a ghost town.. This thread along with a few others that the players are trying desperately to voice the need for a number of things to change in this game..

There is a reason why these forums look like they are on fire half of the time. For the most part it is not people just posting troll threads/topics they are not happy!

It is sad when the number of topics asking for basic things in every MMO outnumber the outcries for content and DLC!

Come next year I do not want to be playing this game and only run into another person if I go to towns to offload items at my bank, or see them at the crafting stations :/

As someone who plays both my PC and my consoles on my TV while sitting in my recliner and couch, this line was particularly infuriating and insulting.
