The Impractical voice only chat.

In this thread (don't lock it zos) I want to bring attention how impractical having only voice chat really is.
But first I want to clarify that I am not against voice chat. It is great when you are in a group or just want chat with random people here and there. It's cool and awesome in certain respects, but when it is the only means of communicating it becomes a huge issue.

So please watch this video, and tell me how someone is supposed to sell something or start a group while this is going on? I recorded this on my phone e so it's not the best camera angles.
https://youtu.be/UZ1dorAbF0k

Text chat is desperately needed on consoles. So please Zenimax consider adding a text chat like pc has over here to consoles.

Question: How do you guys and gals text chat on a console, anyway? On screen keyboard sort of thing?

Do you just plug a keyboard into the sucker?

If so, it's a shame that it would be so easy to allow you to text chat, but that ZOS, for most likely legal reasons (root problem: people can't be trusted with such freedom), you are getting shafted.

I know on xbox there is a keypad you can get. I would just use that. It connects right to your controller.

Millions and millions of players on the PS2 , PS3 and PS4 have been using text chat for over a decade on multiple mmorpg's. ESO is the extreme exception to the rule not having it. I have not looked at many reviews of the console launch and almost every single one rates it as a negative to not have text chat and that it hampers communication. And yes you can just plug in a keyboard or use your controller or use a Bluetooth keyboard from your couch if that's what you want to do.

    Okay. I agree with you.

I honestly feel pretty bad that console players have to deal with voice chat. Voice chat is so invasive.

I cannot imagine having to hear strangers' voices in my living room, when I am trying to do a dungeon in a video game.

Many people treat the game as what it is, a roleplay world, where you do not equal your character, so it is even worse to hear the person and see the character--the disconnect is grand, roleplay is thrown out the window.

    What a hopeless concept.

When I played DCUO on the ps3 I just used the digital keyboard. It worked perfect, just was a little slow, but there are chat pads and usb keyboards (wired and wireless) that can be used.

I'm glad I put the voice player setting to 0, so I have not to listen to that when I forget to turn voice chat off. lol It's just not like I like to play a MMORPG at all... So much about immersion. o:)

Each console handles this in its own ways.
Excluding Ps4 if on Cbox One if the keyboard is plugged in prior to turning on the console then a game or app must also be developed to utilize the keyboard.

By default only the letters n numbers work minus the number pad and all function keys, shift and enter.

As seen on Warframe and Neverwinter when the keyboard is plugged in prior to turning on the console the enter key prompts the text box and you type. Problem is linking and replying or highlighting, quote, etc have convoluted commands and controller+keyboard requirements cause there is no mouse support or a cursor.

What seems practical ends up with new challenges for some.
To each its own but I'd rather not have it on Xbox one.

It's on PC and works great there

FFXIV on consoles has text chat via plugging a keyboard into the console. There is NO reason why ESO shouldn't have text chat. It's ridiculous, hampering, and takes away from enjoyment of the game for a variety of reasons.

You do know that voice chat is proximity based? There is no LFG voice chat or trade voice chat, a "more quit zone" also has less people to sell to and less potential group members

See thats the issue with voice chat only, if I were going to go to a "more quiet zone" I would have to leave the place where everyone is at and that would make it so I can't communicate with them.

If there was text chat, I could leave the noise area, or turn off voice chat completely and use the zone text to form groups, sell or buy items and ask for help with quests ect.

Those are minor challenges when in comparison to not havING a chat at all. I would rather have th k see minor inconveniences and be able to group up, trade, and talk with people all around, than not have it and deal with the garbage we currently have.

The pros outweigh the cons immensely.

Actually a lot of what your commenting as pointed out in another thread is your refusal to adapt
You purchased a game that works the way it's designed.

Either adapt, be innovative or stop complaining. You've even shared many times you're not willing to compromise....bud that's your issue overall.
It's nothing wrong with feedback but at this point you've spent his weeks whining about something that seemingly is not going to change. Oddly what you desire exists on PC.
Sale the console and get a PC...move on or play the game on console as is and be innovative

Yes, I do know. :) That was just a quick response as we can't do otherwise with voice chat anyway.

Yep, text chat would solve that problem easely, but that's not an option at the moment. :/ I hope it will be on the devs plans in the future.

Nothing annoys me more then the people playing music through the headset...squeakers, trolls and the like have nothing on the crap music I hear in this game. Even if the song was a good one (it never is) it sounds like trash through a console headset.

I don't know if text chat will solve this, there will still be people doing this in area chat and I don't want to do business with someone trying to negotiate through the on screen keyboard with my controller.

This is indefensible and the fact that ZOS refuses to even acknowledge it is beyond reason. What a joke. Meanwhile on top of this issue, constant bugs and game crashes, theyre pushing a content patch next month. / facepalm.

I'll be biting my teeth til something better comes along and this thing will be uninstalled.

Nice way to dodge facts and throw insults around. Any other MMO on console has text chat very similar to pc, so why should this game differ? Try to stay on topic, and reply to my comment properly.

I've made over 50 friends in a short period of time using a microphone. It comes with the PS4 and its great. First you plug it in. Then you talk on it. I know that step might be scary but everyone I have met has been pretty normal. We play, chat, have fun.

These other people are looking to do the same thing as you. It's pretty easy. The only thing to fear is fear itself.

At the very least you will be able to turn off the annoying noise and contact whoever you were trying to deal with threw text, make a group and then discuss the deal.

Right now, that is etremely diffcult and almost impossible to do in eso

It's not the fact that people are scared, I use voice chat often. It's the fact that it isn't efficient. Sometimes I don't feel like talking over 20 other people just to sell or buy motifs. Also voice chat has a very limited zone to whom you can talk too, text chat would open up entire zones so you could communicate with many more people at once.

this is ez to control, one, every one talking show its name, and the ones with the loud music are not the majority, so go up the the guy playing the music or screaming and go to his profile and block. I've done this since day one and my time in towns is more productive because of it. also go into the menu and lower the voice chat volume it helps alot.

Voice chat is the best part of this game and when I enter towns it really feels alive to hear every one talking to each other.

I respect your. opinion. I think you are right, text in addition would be lovely. Until it's added, if ever, I find people are respectful of each other and its not so difficult to sell a motif. Like anything timing is everything.

ha I tend to avoid doing business when the chatter is constant and crazy like in your vid but I will if I must as off peak hours are more peaceful yet not the best time to buy/sell something. I finally decided that I want to become a werewolf so I spoke up in Elden Root the other night when it was busy and surprisingly it was quick and painless. A player responded, we grouped and he took me to the shrine to bite me without asking anything in return...I gave him 3K for his trouble even though I don't have much money.

I don't mind voice chat, like I said before. I am saying the addition of a text chat would make selling and buying, forming groups exct. Much easier.

I love voice chat, things like in the video I posted I wouldnt mind if there was a text chat where I can form a group, sell buy or whatever else I wanted to do while I chat and hang out in voice.

And all the time it would take to figure out who is playing the music, who is screaming, who is being offensive, then muting them, I could have used in a text chat and most likely be bed done with what ever I was trying to accomplish.

Voice only is not suffienct enough, we need both text and voice for effective communication
