"This I recommend your at least level ten, with most of your points and attributes in stamina. You want to have two weapons equiped, With good damage on each one also since your werewolf damage is based on stamina and your equipped weapons. You want to get mammoth I think at this level snow troll is also easy but yeah Mammoth. You want to have a few health potions, also you need to heavy attack it. Do not light attack it heavy attack and its health goes down fast, and it can be slain with just using at least one health potion.

There have been those that have beat this quest at level 5, also here was a level 3 who beat it. I wish it was easier but yeah you want to be at least level 9 or ten to do this. Vampire quest is much easier to do its possible at level 6 and lower levels then that to do do it.
With this latest patch, not sure if they changed the quests for both much. Until Im in game. when the patch is over.
PC NA
Please add Fangs to Vampires.

A friend told me that once you become a werewolf you should stay in area were you do the quest and it is easier to level your werewolf to level 10. I wish I had known this, hope this helps someone.

Why would you have weapons equipped? You are stuck in werewolf form. Or was that a bug?
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

I think @Thevampirenight means the weapons you have equipped prior to the quest.

Would sword and shield work for the weapons?

I've killed all three bosses (e.g. elephant, troll & snake) and I personally found the troll the hardest. I died at least 3 times fighting the troll with my staves wielding magicka build Templar. To be honest, I didn't know the weapons you had equipped prior to doing the quest mattered so I'm not the right person to answer your question.

When I did the quest at level11 I got the lizard and defeated him without any effort.

Personally I prefer dual wielding or 2h weapons for my wolf but that's my opinion.

I was bitten by a fellow player and completed the quest at level 8 very easily.

I know this post is a little old, but I'm 100% positive you have your quests flipped around...

The werewolf quest is able to be done at any level easily, a level 3 would hardly struggle, mainly because the werewolf quests scales to your level a bit.

However, the vampire quest does not scale to your level, and I dont mean that in the typical way, as in the quest will say whatever level you are, so if you're level 10, it will say level 10, so everything should be easy right? No... because the enemies you have to kill for the quest do not scale, they will always be level 38.

So while it is definitely not impossible to do the vamp quest at a low level, it is however much, much more difficult than doing the werewolf quest at a low level.

For reference sake, i have completed both quests at level 5, vamp quest took a lot more focus.
