So, I don't get tanking

First of all, sorry if this is a common discussion, but I couldn't find one with the specific doubts that I have.

So I'm new to this game, I got it for PS4. I raided for years as a tank in WoW, and then some in FFXIV. I'm leveling a tank in this game, lvl 20 at the moment. I tried a couple of dungeons, but so far I couldn't tank all enemies. I tried to keep "aggro" from them, but all that I could do was to keep my shield up and taunt them every 15 seconds. Is that the way to tank? Am I missing something here? Is there even actual aggro? Thanks a lot for any help on this matter!

There is Aggro. Tanking is a little different in this game than other MMO's. Something to look at also is using a 2H with your sword/shield combo. You can use brawler to hit multiple enemies and give yourself a damage shield.

Mobs will usually attack the first one to hit them. As a tank in trash, you really just need to focus on keeping the biggest threats contained (2h mobs and s&b ones) keep things like cc and interrups going. As to agro... Honestly ive been tanking a while and im still not sure. At the very least mobs tend to regard skills with multiple effects as having higher threat. Things like calthrops, or sap essence, or cinder storm tend to do this effectively.

And that is one of the best features of ESO tanking and ESO gameplay in general. you shouldn`t be able to tank them all.You should tank the biggest threats. The trash is there for the DPS to handle.

This game is a bit different from your typical mmo. As a tank, your job is to control the enemy and keep the biggest, toughest opponents on yourself. Your dps players can deal with weaker enemies without the need for a tank.

On large groups, the best thing to do is root/slow the enemies to make it easier for your dps to kill them. How you do that depends on your class. Dragon knights use burning talons, sorcerers use encase. Templars and nightblades don't have aoe roots, which makes things a little more difficult.

Ok, thanks. What about blocking? Generally speaking, should I block all the time or only the strongest attacks and inerrupt spells?

For blocking its situational, honestly. If you can find time to get a light attack in, or especially a heavy attack as it will regen stamina, go for it. For the most part its ok to keep blocking. Once you get a boss' rhythems down you can do more.

Quoted for truth. You need a plan. You need to evaluate the threats and hold aggro on the biggest threats. Your DPS need to evaluate what should have the highest target priority (which is usually something different from what you're tanking - typically healers first, then spellcasters and archers while you tank the melee heavy hitters). Your healer needs to keep you and the DPS alive while also providing DPS. It's not simple point and click like it is in some games.

You need to light/heavy attack to generate ultimate, so try to do it if you have a chance.

Ok another question I forgot. I see there's a skill called Sun Shield and seems pretty useful for tanking. But all the other abilities don't. Should I get Puncutring Strikes and use it to level up Aedric Spear to 42? Or are there any other really usfeul skills there for tanking that I don't get because I'm new? Thanks.

you can watch my twitch or my youtube to see some good tanking action ;D of course I'm biased but hey.

Tanking comes down to making sure that any enemy that can insta-kill your dps or healer are taunted to you and for you to interrupt casters/healers/bow .

The kill order in ESO is Healers -> Casters/Bow -> Melee Dps -> Heavy armor Melee

Now, the heavy armor melee usually have some sort of charge that can be blocked and stopped as well as an AOE, so situational awareness is key for all players. If its red get out of it.

You are more of the battle co-coordinator more than the "typical" MMO tank who would just run into a bunch of enemies, grab aoe aggro and hold on. You will dictate which enemies need to die first and make sure that any long cast interrupt able abilities are handled.

My guild always puts the crown on tank, so we know where he/she is at all times and can base our location and awareness of mobs off them. You are the leader of the group and the corner stone of winning or losing.

    Now, DO IT.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

Puncturing strikes has a morph that heals you, and you'll want blazing spear (a spear shards morph) for aoe damage. Radial sweep, the ultimate, is also very good for tanking, with one of the morphs significantly increasing your damage resistance.

The other thing that's nice about Radial Sweep is that it's got a relatively low Ultimate cost, so you can actually use it pretty frequently.

Also, be aware there is a thing called "over taunting". After a certain amount of taunts in a period of time (3 per 10-15 seconds?) aggro will reset and he will go attack the next person with the highest threat. It's pretty safe to refresh taunts every 10s or so and that should do the trick.

Also, some boss mechanics will work to where it will attack a random party member, so don't think you aren't taunting in these situations.

Templar tank is a great single target tank cause of the shields and heals. But not great on trash due to no CC ability. DKs are generally considered the best tanks cause they have an aoe CC and a sweet self heal. But it can still be done with templars. What I see a lot of tanks get is the aoe attack in the PVP assult line I believe. Its Caltrops. Its aoe dmg and slows the enemies. About the best you can get with a templar.
I'm kind of a small deal!

    Ooohh.. a Templar tank.

Yes, Sun Shield is your friend. Rune Focus as well. When I started my Templar I decided to raise her as a tank, though I had never tanked before, and I am having a lot of fun.

As others have said, it's all about identifying the biggest threats and keeping them away from your DPS and going from there.
