im currently level 17 and im using heavy armor as a sorcerer. ive done some looking around the interweb and people are saying its a bad idea. should i be using light armor? and why? i feel like i would die a lot faster while doing anything in light armor vers heavy.

In PvP, both is viable (light armor needs damage shields though)
    In Solo, both is viable

In Group PvE, you will need that extra sustain, ignore spell resist and higher crit you get from light armor to pull out those 15k+ DPS that people tend to like so much. The issue with "I would die a lot faster" is a l2p issue, once you can hide behind a tank that can keep aggro and a healer that knows what he is doing. (Don't stand in the red, dodge dangerous stuff, that kind of thing... And use damage shields in super special situations)

PvP Sorcs should go with light armour because Hardened Ward is all the defence you'll need and it doesn't benefit from armour mitigation. In PvE... well, you should still go for light armour because as it is Sorcs are kind of shoehorned into magicka DPS.

Medium Armor Stamina DPS is viable too. (Even if TP, NB and DK are better with that) But Stamina DPS isn't a "Mage" anymore.

Any magicka build will have to sustain itself trough magicka use for both mitigation and damage. Light will give you the most cost reduction, the most regen , and the most damage for your spells.

I've been running 4 Light / 3 Heavy while leveling. Once I get my Light armor skills higher, I'll go to 5 Light / 2 Heavy... and eventually will either go all Light or 6 Light / 1 Heavy just for the added protection. Since I don't PvP, all of this is for PvE content.

Some players say to eventually stick with 6 Light / 1 Heavy, using the Chest piece for the Heavy because it gives the highest armor rating, especially when combined with Reinforced.

If you are magicka based using a a staff ' destro or healing staff' go all light armor and use your magic shields. If you melee and are stamina/hp based stick with the the heavy.

I've been running 5 light 1 heavy 1 medium (not sets).
The light for DPS, heavy for sustain and medium for roll dodge reduction. Lots of red circles.
