How long until a bounty wears off?

I went on a killing spree last night. You know all the people you rescue at the start of the Ebonheart Pact story? Yeah. Killed 'em all. Then I came back a few minutes later and they had respawned. So I killed them all again.

Incidentally - if you attack a wounded refugee that is dying on the floor - but don't manage to kill them - they get up and start attacking you. I would think they would be grateful that I helped them recover. Maybe I should be a doctor...

Anyway, long story short... I killed over 100 people and now have a bounty of over 50000g. (And got the mass murdered achievement I didn't know existed!)

I've escaped to coldharbour for now - but how long does it take for it to wear off? Is it dependant on the amount the bounty is? Am I stuck in oblivion forever?

I have 100c bounty, it took nearly an hour, you better of creating another char, if you didn't go far into the game, since I'm pretty sure that bounty gonna take weeks or month real life time.

More than 36 hours , from personal experience, if I have a bounty that big.

I'm level 45 - so that's not really my favourite option :-P. But if the worst comes to the worst, I can simply hand myself in. They'll kill me on sight - but i'll lose the bounty.

Thing is... I REALLY wanted to get away with it...

I didn't know that, but doesnt that make bounty kinda irrelevant, since you can do whatever, then just let the guard kill you, then you'll be free man, well unless there something I'm missing.

Also keep in mind that should you invest in the skill "Kickback" under the Legerdemain skill line which unlocks at level 6 onwards. It lowers the amount of bounty that you need to pay should you decide to pay it directly to a fence (shortcutting you to be upstanding again in the face of the law).

It decays while you're offline.

If a guard kills you, it will subtract whatever gold you have from your inventory towards your bounty. And if you still have bounty leftover, then you will still be considered as kill on sight. You need to clear off bounty by paying for it or letting it decay. No other way around it

Well, there is always the option of playing an alt for a while until your bounty is gone, or spend a lot of time in cyrodil, warzones know no law...

But just going to the guard won't help, they'll keep killing you until the bounty is paid. If you have that much gold on you, no problem, they'll take it from your corpse. if not... rinse and repeat.

Generally... if you can't pay your fine, don't do the crime.

this is correct. bounty does decay when you are offline. however the rate at which it decays is not exactly quick.

I also hit the Mass Murderer achievement quite easily and did it in maybe half an hour to an hour - but by the end of it I had a bounty of around 57K.

I logged out and didn't play that char for a day - when I came back 24 hours later it had only reduced to around 50K, so expect to be out for a week to a week and a half to get your bounty to decay to a decent amount.

(FYI - I ended up paying out 49K in bounty at the Fence, I just couldn't be bothered waiting anymore)

Why would you think killing that many people back to back would net you anything but a terrible bounty?

@Leon119 bounty decay rate is dependent on your level. (Although since AdamBourke is Lvl 45, that will be close to what he's getting.)

Well... it's about time I finishd craglorn and the main quest anyway :-).

DO the guard from other alliances attack you for crimes in your home alliance? I'm guessing so as there is only one bounty...
