Things to know before starting

pbrslammer
Hi All,

So I picked the game up Tuesday, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Sounds like a lot people had to wait anyway with the network errors. Anyways I'm going to put my life on pause soon and start playing. Is there any general advise, information, or things to look out for before playing?

My first question would be how many mmorpgs have you played in the past? That would change my advice a bit.

But what the above said, take your time and enjoy looking around and discovering the world. Get into the story a bit and don't feel rushed. If you go that route and enjoy it, the game will be there for you to enjoy for a long time and you probably wont get bored with it.

Classes all have the ability to be good at things. There aren't really any OP classes right now but there are OP builds. Matching a good race to your class/build is a great idea, but not necessary. I made an ORC sorceror ffs. Cuz it's fun.

Oh, and welcome and HAVE FUN!!!!!<----most important part.

The game is great and will get you hooked but you are going to have network issues. I would avoid until you start to see these issues lessen if you are able to hold out.

Take some time to check out the options; there's a lot of stuff in there that might be of use. For instance there's an option that'll prevent you from attacking friendly NPCs which is something you probably don't want to do starting out.

On your first character you start in a prison (because Elder Scrolls!); you can pick up a lot of stuff in there. Take your time and open chests, urns, wheelbarrows and things. I've seen people complain that they're level 4 or 5 and still using the armor they were 'born' with, but by the time I leave the tutorial I generally have replaced at least half my armor.

If this is your first MMO remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. IMO you'll get the most out of the game if you take your time and drink in the world and spend some time on the lore (there're a ton of books to read though so don't try to read every single one or you'll never get to playing!)

Take your time to look around and find everything in each zone.

Keep your weapon sheathed in cities.

If you want to steal, make sure nobody is looking.

    Don't spam healing/AOE abilities in a city.

    Start researching for crafting early.

When you are in a group for a dungeon or PVP, Co-Ordinate with one another. Talk.

Mix it up with new abilities.

    Have fun!

Make plans to make one or two of your characters mules to hold your things. Your going to be running out of space fast if you loot all the things so plan for who's going to hold what. I personally have one that just holds all things for cooking because there so many ingredients to that alone.

Also never waste your gold repairing at shops. You can find or craft something just as good for less.

Don't buy the horses in the stables. They cost way to much and are just skins.

Spend all you horse upgrade points into inventory +1's every day. Try to log in at least once a day to train that skill on all your characters even if you do nothing else in game.

And finally don't go all o.c.d. just have fun and enjoy the world and story and exploring.

Invest in armor/weapon sets. They will help you out a lot! Get someone who's leveled their crafting on these to make you the items you need. You can get away with green items up to level 30. Then start looking at the blue items.

I can't emphasize this enough. I actually feel like a broken record the last few days, because I keep telling this to new players who simply don't know that they're supposed to go to the starter islands first. I don't blame them for not realizing this: back at PC launch I didn't realize it either because it's totally non-intuitive that you don't start in the location where you're intended to start questing. Unfortunately ZOS made a massive mistake in listening to some loud-mouthed idiots pre-launch who complained about having to actually start in the starter zones.

Anyway, here's some more info on the starter islands, and why you should go there first, copied from what i posted in another thread.

The starter islands are where you should go first after the intro/tutorial in order to learn the game as a whole (as well as leveling up, gaining skill points, getting gear to use, and getting the beginning of your alliance's storyline).

The exact quest and location of the quest giver to send you there depends on what alliance you are, but for all three alliances there should be a quest giver just a little outside where you first woke up after Coldharbour. This quest giver will tell you to go to a boat or ship at the docks of the city where you are, and take passage to the (first) starter island.

For Daggerfall Covenant this will send you to Stros M'kai and start off the main questline for that zone. Finishing the main questline for that zone will send you to the second starter island (Betnikh), and finishing the main questline for Betnikh will send you back to Daggerfall in Glenumbra.

For Ebonheart Pact this will send you to Bleakrock Isle and start off the main questline for that zone. Finishing the main questline for that zone will send you to the second starter zone (Bal Foyen), and finishing the main questline for Bal Foyen will send you back to Davon's Watch in Stonefalls.

For Aldmeri Dominion this will send you to Khenarthii's Roost and start off the main questline for that zone. There's only one starter island for Aldmeri Dominion (but it's bigger so it has about the same content as the other alliances get), so finishing the main questline for that zone will send you back to Vulkhel Guard in Auridon.

In all cases, I strongly suggest you fully explore the islands before completing the main questlines there and moving on. You'll discover multiple side-quests this way, as well as areas of interest and sky shards.

If you do this, by the time you're done with the starter zones and you come back to the city in your alliance's first full zone, you should be about level 8, and you should be well prepared to start questing there.

When you start raking in the cash (it's not hard) research Nirnhoned first or early if you intend to PvP. If you wait until last like many of us did, it is a 27 day research time.

I should elaborate- You will need to purchase Nirnhoned gear from a trade store in order to research it. It will run you 15-22k depending on the store.

    So UrQuan...

Are you saying (I'm Ebonheart) that rather than do quests in Stonefall where I "woke up", I should be heading to the "starter island" of Bleackrock?

I thought I was doing starter quests in Stonefall where I woke up.

His advise for Daggerfall Covenant seems to be correct. After going to the dock and traveling to Stros M'kai things from my past are starting to be explained.

So I tried playing for the first time last night. I waited for about 15 minutes before getting to the player creator screen. I was booted in the midst of that process. That same process happened to me two more times, but the third time I wasn't booted and played for a few hours.

Read that, it'll get you the basics.

To add to that, decide what kind of player/character you are or want to be from the start. Do you like to play a mage? A thief/rogue? An archer? A warrior with a big greatsword, or a tank with a shield? Pick one of these, and then focus your decisions based on that.

The obvious class choice for a mage is sorceror, but sorcerors only get lightning based spells (outside of weapons) - if you'd prefer to play a fire-based mage, go with dragonknight - despite the name, they dont have to be melee fighters in heavy armor.

If you want to run a thief/rogue/archer style character, nightblade is going to be the class that gives you the most synergy.

    PS4 / NA
    M'asad - Khajiit Nightblade - Healer
Pakhet - Khajiit Dragonknight - Tank
Raksha - Khajiit Sorcerer - Stamina DPS
Bastet - Khajiit Templar - Healer
Leonin - Khajiit Warden - Tank

Sorry, I missed this post until now. But the answer is yes: if you're Ebonheart you should be going to Bleakrock Isle first, do all of the quests there, then move on to Bal Foyen next (the last quest on Bleakrock will take you there) and complete all of the quests there next. The final quest in Bal Foyen will take you back to Davon's Watch in Stonefalls, and it will lead into the main questline there. That's when you should start questing in Stonefalls.

When you make your character, use the spin function and zoom in and out function to see what they look like. Once you hit Create, your not changing it.

Also, make the arms, legs, hips etc a bit skinnier than you think you want them to be as they seem to get thicker in the game (its a perspective issue). You don't have to go nuts with making them smaller, it's just I made a guy with what I thought were normal looking muscular legs and he ended up looking like he had the legs of a NFL Full Back.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Are you playing in the Aldmeri Dominion? If so then a little beyond the NW part of the starting town is a dark anchor site called Iluvamir dolmen and imo is the easiest way to get decent loot early as well as a good spot to level up. There's almost always 10 or more players that show up at the spot when it spawns and it happens every 5 minutes or so. With so many players hungry for daedric blood, you just have to stand within the lit area to level up skills then loot the chest after the mini boss is defeated.

Speaking of leveling skills, it's not based upon how many times you use them but rather what's equipped that levels them up...a stupid system imo.

Actually yeah, that's really good advice. You have to contribute in some way in order to get the chest when the anchor is closed, so use a bow or a staff, or put some ranged skills on your bar, and make sure you tag at least a few of the enemies (probably get as many as possible). There are always plenty of people at this dolmen, though, so it'll be very easy to do, and it is a good source of quality low-level gear.

55 or 60 days for the 9th one. unless you have the 4th Research Passive, then it is 30 days, unless you have ESo Plus, then it is 27 days.

Starts at 6 hours, then doubles for each one. Research Passives can reduce this quite a bit, and let you do more than one at a time.
