Why are my weapon strikes so slow?

All my combative moves are so slow to execute that I die repeatedly and quickly in even routine fights. My ability to strike resembles turn based combat and is frustrating, dying so quickly is putting me off playing the game to be honest. Frustration is spoiling the whole experience for me.

Have you checked your characters stamina vs. the weapon being used? That could be a factor.

Thanks for the reply. The short answer is no I haven't checked?

Will the speed of execution of my actual strikes improve according to the settings? I put it down to speed of processor/Internet ping rate/number of characters on screen at the same time causing slow-down?

I mean unless you have huge lag or a crappy computer this has no impact on speed of execution

in ESO combat is a combination of:
    - light attacks (click left mouse button)
    - heavy attacks (hold and release left mouse button)
    - class skills and weapon skills

class and weapon skills are either instant cast (i.e. it happens immediately) or have a channel time (ie. it takes time to be casted). night be that you are running a glass cannon with 1.5s skills and you get killed straight away.

which weapon are you using, which skills are on your action bar?

    Light/heavy attacks aren't everything.

There are indeed only a very few setups where "white strikes" are the main damage.

    1. Check your skills!
See how they work, when you will need them and then use them. Maybe you've got some crows control (fear, stun, set off balance) or some other spells also give you a slight heal while doing damage.

    2. Find out where your character flaws are
Are you being slain on the same type of enemy? Like being a Vampire and dieing of fire damage - get a fire damage reduction rune!
Maybe you just are not aware that you encounter "boss enemies". These are marked by an additional symbol at their name and they're much more powerful than normal enemies.

    Most important:
    3. Get used to blocking, dodging and interrupting
There are some occasions where you have to look what your enemy is doing. If he's charging a heavy attack, for example, you can block it to set him off balance for a few seconds. That means that he won't do damage in that time and you have enough time to put him down.
You also can interrupt most channeled spells. If you need to know when to do it, I advise you do create a second character and then play the intro again. And read it. This will not only save your life, this is also a crucial component of end game PvP.

    4. Specialize your character
Spells scale with Stamina OR Magicka, it depends on them. Class spells, for example, only scale with Magicka (otherwise they state it in their text).
So maybe you made a melee fighter based on Stamina, but use class spells. So you may have an awesome amount of Stamina, but your damage won't improve as your spells need Magicka. Check it!

Thanks guys for the advice and tips.

I should've made clear in my initial post that I am using a PS4 and my weapon is a sword as I didn't chose a spell caster class. I tried to arm with a discarded steel sword and shield, but whether by a bug or glitch, found the only weapon in my inventory available to use was a two handed sword? I know this sword would be heavier to wield but it's not the limitation of the weapon I am questioning here but the game's ability to execute attack moves on my opponents? Other players around me seem to be slashing away with ease and speed and kill their foes with efficiency I cannot come close to.

Seems to me you only try light and heavy attacks. The weapon you equip with has no impact on the weight or speed... though 2H sword will do more damage than a 1H sword...

    What class did you choose?
    DK (DragonKnight)
    Templar
    NB (Nightblade)
    Sorcerer?

You have skill points to assign. assign them to your class tree... (those are your spells)

I haven't played on a console yet but on PC it was taking a decent amount of attacks from monsters to kill my completely noob low level heros (meaning only using found gear). Even with a 2H mace you can kill off 2-3 enemies with only the slow heavy attacks before they kill you. This is just a learning to play issue and you will get better at it with practice. You'll find plenty of better weapons / armor as you do the basic town quests and a couple solo dungeons and with that gear the game will seem even easier.

Also be sure to take advantage of your bash skill to interrupt casting enemies, this will save you a lot.
    For the Covenant!
    Svvord - magicka NB
    Lavv - magicka DK
    Povver - stamina NB
    Psylint - stamina NB
    Yelruc - magicka Sorc

I opted for NB class. The skill points I have allocated so far are to Stamina and Strength?
