Question about templar skills

Hardicon
Hardicon
I have a question about Templar skills from the aedric spear line. Is puncturing sweeps and blazing spears and explosive charge considered spells or weapon attack based on magic damage. I was doing some testing with structured entropy and didn't notice any change in damage when I activate structured entropy. This lead me to believe maybe these skills were based on magicka but were considered physical attacks instead of spells. Which lead me to wonder is structured entropy and inner light was worth it for my build right now which uses those abilities. So any help in answering this question would be appreciated.

they are doing magic damage so entropy should be affecting it. have you measured these with a dps meter? screenshots?

EDIT: i have entropy on my secondary bar (when healing). i pop it on a mob and then switch back to my main healing bar because the 20% spell damage buff stays with you the duration of entropy.

Well I was using ftc and from what I noticed the damage appeared to be the same with or without structured entropy activated. It was a very small sample size though as I was just playing around with some builds but the dps was the same for each fight. Of course each fight didn't last very long so kind of hard to tell I was just fighting even level mobs. I was vr1 fighting vr1 mobs which took all of about 5 seconds.

yeah.. you might need a bit more data. try killing the same mobs over and over again with just puncturing sweeps. with and without entropy on.

Did you pick the Stamina or Magic Morphs to these skills?

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    Works for me.

Base hit went from 1342 to 1456 on a L10 spriggan.

Tooltip doesn't change though, and even if it did it still says something like 700, which is way off anyway.

These are all magicka based spells.
In other words they benefit from increased Magicka and Spell Damage.
Had you chose Biting Jabs over sweeps, you would notice "Ability now scales off Weapon Damage and Max Stamina" and that it now uses Stamina as a resource.

A rule of thumb when the game released was that ALL class abilities scaled off Magicka and used Magicka as their resource, while all weapon skills (staves as well) scaled off Stamina (even though staves used magicka as a resource). Over time ZOS wised up and made some changes, giving certain skills a stamina morph and changing staves to now scale off Magicka. Most class abilities are Magicka based unless they say otherwise at the bottom of the skill (e.g., Ability now scales off Weapon Damage and Max Stamina. Increase Weapon Critical Strike rating.). Another good indicator is the ability now requires stamina as a resource.

    Hope this helps.

To make it even more complicated :-(

    - Some magicka bases spells (under 9 m distance) work with weapon crit
    - but some magic passives, which come with the same spell, use magic crit
    - so: a magic AE as impulse does DD by melee% but props a DoT which is magica%
    - Same applies to non-AE "magic" skills under 9 meter (DK, etc.)

The 4 hits of biting jabs do weapon crit based dmg, but the burning light passive...

This is why often it makes sense to take both CPs for weapon and magic crit and there is concrete answer for any spec

Thanks for the help guys, yeah I got the difference between magic and stamina just was unsure of those specific spells. I guess I will have to watch a bit closer to see the change in damage.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a starter set of crafted light gear for a magic based Breton Templar. I have clothing but I don't have all the traits researched for the sets. I also don't have tons of money this is my first character and he just hit V2 last night.

For crafted you can't go wrong with 5pc Seducer/3 Magnus (4 if dw or s/b). 5pc Warlock is a good option as well until v5+. Though Seducer works really well along with the Breton racial.
