Spell erosion testing 2.09 patch

Spell erosion test result:

1 total point spent in the mage:

Curse tooltip dmg: 5665
Dmg vs shield: 4532

Dmg vs 16684 resist (1 point in elemental expert): 4132
Dmg vs 16684 resist (1 point in spell erosion): 4138

51 total points spent in the mage:

Forgot to note down curse tooltip dmg and unmitigated dmg vs shield for this test.
However it isn't needed.

Dmg vs 16684 resist (51 point in elemental expert): 4332
Dmg vs 16684 resist (51 point in spell erosion): 4421

Basically 1 point in spell erosion gives 0.1% dmg where 1 point in thaumaturge gives 1% dmg.
51 points in spell erosion gives 2% dmg where 51 points in thaumaturge give around 15% dmg.

I had 5 light armor, apprentice mundus stone and gold nirnhoned staff.

    Thanks for the testing.

Is it possible that gold nirn staff + apprentice + light armor passive brought the resist to almost 0 by itself? Then spell erosion had nothing to work on?

    Still not working?

I'm currently working on a Magicka-based melee build for my Nightblade, and I'd REALLY like to run with a Spell Penetration build, but I'm not keen on respeccing 14 dozen times just to see if something's working or not. That's a TON of gold...

    :(

Resists were not reduced to 0%. You can easily see that because dmg with 51 in erosion was lower than unmitigated dmg.

Spell penetration is still a bit broken imo, it seems many players have enough to ignore most the SR on LA builds.

Do you have the Extended Stats add-on that shows your spell penetration aka focus rating? It might give more depth to the numbers you mentioned during your test.

Edit: I also use 5LA and gold nirnhoned staff and sometimes I hit people for 13k when my cfrags crits on enemies who dont block. This is about the same damage I do when I crit against poor goats.

You don't have enough data to reach any conclusions.

Spell Erosion reduces a percentage of the target's spell resist. For targets with great spell resistance, spell erosion should be relatively more valuable than elemental expert or thaumaturge. For targets with little spell resistance, spell erosion should provide less benefit. Your test target does not have very good spell resist.

In short, you need to test against a wider range of known spell resist levels, including some of the people running 40k+ resists.

I haven't done this, as ZOS has made it so difficult for us to test this (or pretty much anything else). But if the tooltips reflect the actual mechanics, your testing isn't done ;)

    First, thanks for testing.

Did you factor in that those 51 points in the mage also increased your magicka and thus your damage? You need to spend them elsewhere in the mage when testing with 1 in spell erosion. You're also talking about damage increase by putting points into thaumaturge, but I don't see the numbers for that anywhere (I assume you wrote elemental expert instead)?

I'm confused. Is it the lack of coffee, but for me it looks like as if spell erosion grants higher damage increase?

I didnt include test results for thaumaturge. However it does exactly as tooltip says. Feel free to test yourself. Already spent 40k on respecs for that short test. First put 1 point in elemental expert (because it adds same magicka as 1 point in spell erosion). Then respecced and put 1 point in spell erosion. Same deal with 51 points spent.

And yes a test vs 40k or higher resists is also needed. I did one in 2.4 though and even vs 44k it only added 60 dmg with 30 points spent. But things cpuld have changed since then.

elemental expert does nothing for curse, ergo it's his "control" setup (= CP spend in the mage in a way they do nothing except grant the same magicka bonus they do when spent on spell erosion)

what I find strange in that test, is that your "unmitigated damage" against shields, is SIGNIFICANTLY lower then tooltip damage... any idea why that is the case?

So in summary, Spell Erosion is simply broken then?
