Over Taunting?

I'v played ESO since launch but I have always played a healer or DPS. Last week I decided to roll a DK tank and while I was running the dungeons "Spindal, FG, BC and Wayrest" I had trouble keeping aggro on several of the boss's. One of my group members told me I could be "over-taunting" by hitting the boss with "pierce armor" to often.

Was just hoping I could get a confirm or deny on the "over-taunting" and maybe some advice on how to maintain aggro on a boss. I'm not as concerned about trash mobs as much as I am with the boss right now. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

If you taunt more than three times within fifteen seconds, the boss will be overtaunted. I find it best to try to taunt every ten to twelve seconds. That way you are not overtaunting, but you are still giving yourself a bit of wiggle room for safety sake.
This one has an eloquent and well thought out response to tha... Ooh sweetroll!

I think it is something like 3 taunts in the span of 15 seconds will reset aggro. It is part of the reason why they removed the taunt ability from Sorc pets. Either way over-taunting is definitely a thing confirmed by Devs. My numbers might be wrong but it definitely exists.

Does "reset aggro" mean the taunts just stop stacking, but still go 15 seconds, or does it actually wipe what remaining taunt duration exists?

Over taunt removes the aggro from tank and it can aggro on any player, the abilities timer won't reset on boss, the last use of taunt ability stays but you will lose aggro.

Best option is to use a addon which shows ability timer on bosses and mob

Yeah as everyone said, over three times in a row. However in my experience it's always been within 10 sec not 15.

If you want to make your life easy, download srendarrs. Reapply taunt at 4 seconds and you'll never lose aggro or overtaunt.

More like the boss becomes immune to taunt when you use it more often than once every 10 sec, so it starts running wild attacking whoever is generating the most aggro with heals or dps. Taunt still ticking on the boss has no effects, since boss is immune. Also why it takes a few seconds before you can get the boss back on track, if you overtaunt. I guess it works a bit like cc immunity.

This is one of those strange mechanics you have no clue about when you start tanking. There's no official or tutorial information about it really, need to search and ask around. I also used taunt to frequently and ended up killing the dps, first time lol.

Tested it out today and it was like night and day. I had no problem maintaining aggro on the boss by using my taunt once every 10 seconds. Thanks a lot for the feedback.

Still wondering if this means a healer using taunt three times consecutively on the boss resets the healer's boss aggro? If so, probably a bug.

Hmm, I'll have to extend an apology to our poor dps Sorcerer, who usually dies at least half a dozen times in a non-vet dungeon (we haven't tried a vet one yet, regular are plenty tough for us).

Thanks for the addon tip, Jules, does Srendarr still work? It doesn't look like it was updated since September, 2014.

Can you folks describe, in detail please, the scenario where Overtaunting supposedly happens?

I tested this out with a Templar and a Dragon Knight, both VR2 at the time.

Test 1: Mammoth outside of Riften
    - DK hit with Pierce Armor and did nothing else
    - Templar used Radiant Oppression and killed the Mammoth
    - Result: No loss of aggro, Mammoth stayed on DK, as expected

Test 2: Mammoth outside of Riften
    - DK spammed Pierce Armor 4x times, in rapid succession
    - Templar used Radiant Oppression and killed the Mammoth
    - Result: No loss of aggro, Mammoth stayed on DK, no "Overtaunting" observed.
    - Test 2.1-2.x: Templar used other methods of killing the Mammoth, no loss of aggro observed for any of them.

Test 3: Cell Haunter (1st Boss) in Banished Cells
    - DK spammed Pierce Armor throughout fight
    - Templar healed and attacked constantly (we were duoing the Boss at VR2, it wasn't an easy fight)
    - Result: Cell Haunter only attacked Templar with 1 specific attack, it's blue beam, which seemed to target select at random. All other attacks were on the DK.

TL;DR - "Overtaunting", if it exists, is not as simple as "spam taunts too often and you lose aggro". Some boss attacks don't follow regular taunt rules though.

It does BUT, most of the time when boss runs amok it is because the fancy LAG bugs out the taunt.

Lag can do some ugly things admittedly, but I'm still not seeing a scenario where Overtaunting actually occurs.

Basically, from what I've observed, if you pick a single (obviously tough) mob you can spam the ever loving hell out of Pierce Armor, taunting them over and over and over and the mob will not go off and rampage on someone else because of "Overtaunting".

So, what's the scenario where you can be applying taunts one right after the other and have aggro shift? I'll be happy to test it in game and see if I can confirm it.

I've noticed a few bosses completely ignoring me after a while (especially bosses in Tempest Island and the frozen dungeon in EP I forgot the name of - the one with quest that's bugging out since beta..), instead running around the room picking on ranged dps and healer.
Since I wasn't playing ESO for a few months, I was telling the group that I hate taunt-immune bosses, but they told me it's because I've been taunting too often.
