Do the "pros" use heavy armor?

yoda101280ub17_ESO
So I'm new to the game, I'm a bit of an alt machine so I've already started every class up to at least 15 just to get a feel for each. In that time I've also read a little about leveling builds and what not and it seems most all of them don't use heavy armor. I was curious if that was simply for leveling or does that hold in end-game as well?

Generally the thinking behind it seems to be that the bonuses from light armor if you use magicka or medium if you're stamina based are too useful over the protection from heavy armor. Seems like even tanks will tend to try and get their mitigation via other avenues and not just slap on heavy armor. Now granted most of my reading has been about leveling, not end-game stuff as that is not on my plate for some time. I was curious though if heavy armor is a viable thing, are you gimping yourself by using it? I recently had in mind of making a DK tank, now of course the picture in my head was a sword and board clad in heavy armor but upon reading I found some of the popular builds recommend a mix of light and a couple medium to enhance magicka and bolster stamina for blocking/dodging essentially.

Even with my limited time with the game it's clear that the way you play while leveling might be very different from where you end up late game so I was wondering if maybe tanks swap to heavy armor later in-game or is it generally just the norm that it's better not to use heavy armor much?

For solid end game tanking, at least five pieces of heavy armor. Maybe have one or two pieces on for leveling or a set of training traited heavy armor before turning in a quest.

Actually. For leveling I personally go five piece heavy, one medium, one light ALL pieces crafted with training trait. Every ten levels I have a whole new set crafted for myself. Also for weapons I will wear one weapon untill its level fifety and every skill is at least to morphable level. Oh and I don't bother with armor passives untill vet level. When you get to around vet 1 you should be to the point that you know what you want to do endgame and should begin to develop a build.

Yes heavy armor is very used endgame, even more so with 1.6 update. I have been in heavy armor for two months now and will not be looking back. In pvp its fun to laugh in the face of five players as they desperately try to break you! But through excellent defensive capabilities, they can't take you on. Heavy armor just kinda builds a particular type of defensive character. Just remember that the more defensive you are, the least offensive you are and vice versa

Tanking - 5 Heavy 2 Medium or 5 Heavy 2 Light - Depending on what resource you're having trouble sustaining.

If you're a DPS, one piece of Heavy Armor is so utterly worthless in the mitigation department it isn't worth giving up 3% cost reduction for.

What you gain from 7/7 of a particular armor type is not worth it as compared to having the additional 6% to all primary stats and regen from 5/1/1. Undaunted mettle for ftw!

True, but if you play as a healer I recommend people to at least go 2 pieces of heavy (Chest + Legs/Helm) + 5 lights. You'll get high armour and spell resist while keeping most of the light armour advantages

Undaunted Mettle makes it worth it now I think.
