The Legerdemain Skill line can be increased by Picking Locks, Pickpocketing, and Fencing/Laundering Stolen Goods.

If all you intend to do is steal from containers and Fence and Launder goods it will take a long time to lever this skill line to 20. What I did was check to see how much experience is give for Picking Locks, Pickpocketing and Fencing/Laundering items, the breakdown is as follows:

Fencing and Laundering Items: 1 item = 1 exp point (Doesn't matter whether the item is white, green or blue)

Pickpocketing:
Easy: 1 item = 1 exp point
Medium: 1 item = 2 exp points
Hard: 1 item = 4 exp points

Picking Locks (Doors and Boxes)
Simple = 1 exp point
Intermediate = 2 exp points
Advance = 4 exp points

Good Luck

    Thanks for this - I was wondering the same thing, just hadn't actually gotten around to really investigating... much appreciated!

    What do you have to do so that Pickpocketing or Lockpicking becomes easier, just level up the skill line? Just wondering if the chances ever improve.

    Leveling up Light Fingers and Lock Picking helps but leveling up lock picking doesn't make picking locks easier, it only give you a higher chance of forcing locks open, Light Fingers make the % chance of pickpocketing go up.

    When Pickpocketing, if you wait a few seconds you will see that the % chance will change, it's best to try pickpocketing when the % chance is high.

    When picking locks there is basically 3 tumbler locations to remember (near the top, middle, and bottom). I've found that by remembering these locations and just going down the five tumblers using my pick moving each one to the top position releasing and moving to the next until I've tried all at the top position, then I go down the line again moving each tumbler that didn't catch on the first try to the middle position and last but not least I go down the line the last time moving each one that didn't catch to the bottom position. It's actually quite fast this way, but this is the way I do it, others may do it differently.

    Thanks for that! I was looking for information on how much exp you get from this :) Btw. if you want to have loads of items to launder/sell and get exp (and almost no money) kill animals and get their guts etc.

    The advice above is good. But the advice I saw that really helped me with Locks is to Look at the Springs, not the Pins. The springs start moving before the pins start shaking, and you can release the mouse at that point. Makes setting the pins a breeze. Especially if your aware of the 3 or 4 points that the pins set at.

    Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
