Stamina and Healing Templars

Decided that it was about time that I played a healer, considering they've always been one of my favorite classes.

I want to emphasize that i'm not looking for the "omfg best build ever" or "to compete for top end trials", what i'm looking for is to be capable in healing dungeon groups. So, with that out of the way...

I want to roll a Templar, and the goal is to use a Restoration Staff to heal, while using a two hander for damage/secondary. Having two friends who have already played dungeon healers in this game, i'm pretty well aware that Resto Staff is pretty much a requirement to heal group dungeons.

I have two questions:
  1. One of my favorite races in the game is Redguard. Redguards, as a race, get a lot of bonuses to stamina. Would I have any uses for these bonuses? Is being a Redguard going to hurt my ability to be an effective healer TOO much?
  2. Mixing Armor: I was considering mixing some armor pieces for two reasons... one being appearance, and two to get a couple of small melee bonuses with my two hander when i'm not healing. Mostly Light Armor. Just switching up the Breastplate and one other piece to medium. Is this going to hurt me? If so, how much?

I appreciate all the advice I can get. Thank you very much. :)

    1. You can choose whatever race you like. It's not a problem.

    2. Just play as you want and do what you like. Newbee content isn't hard. And you always can change your build later ( and you will change, becouse balance is changing)

I would say that when it comes to racial passive the most important ones are related to your health and resource pools. So I would recommend having either a racial bonus that helps the resource you use the most or your health. My first character was an imperial, and when I got my khajiit to max level I was very sad.

    Just to re-ask the question...

Redguards get big bonuses to stamina. How would I utilize Stamina as a healer? Would I? If so, how?

The game is designed in such a way that if you want to be a good healer, you need a lot of magicka.

That means you need magicka and magicka regeneration.

Which means you need light armour.

Which also means destruction staff or restoration staff, since they are the only weapons that use any magicka.

Now the good news is that your pick of race won't make much of a difference at all, especially since, as you said, you are not looking for the "best" build.

Also, if you use something like the "Wykkyd's Outfitter" addon, you can very easily swap entire skill /weapon / armour sets when you are not being a dedicated healer at the press of a button. If you put all your attribute points in health you can basically switch 100% without having to go somewhere to refund points.

If you try to use a 2 hander for damage while specced for mostly healing, you will find you hit like a wet noodle, while using up all your stamina in only a few skill presses.

The numbers for missing 2 pieces of light armour would be 6% less spell cost reduction, 8% less magicka recovery and 16% less spell resistance.

The power of your spells also scales off of magicka (and spell power) so they will be weaker, while the power of your 2 hander weapon skills scale off stamina (and weapon power) so they will be quite weak if your stamina is only in the 1000-1200 range.

I would say don't do it. DPs of your stamina weapon will be garbage if your all light, magica and spell crit, Which any good healer should be. pre vet you can do anything the game is stupidly easy. But it does get challenging and u may as well make a decent character. Keep your pool toped up with heavy restorarion staff, and use dots + buffs instead of adding meager DPs with stam weapon; then your 3/4 the way to being a good healer already. Im not saying stam DPs is always meager I'm saying if your built for healing it will be and therefore a detrement. Some may disagree but I just can't see any sound logic the other way.

I'll be completely honest with you. If you want a challenge healing, roll whatever armor you want, light armor DOES make a huge difference in not only numbers but efficiency, however i have done every dungeon wearing heavy armor and no light and it is doable, you just have to be more conscious of what you are doing and not spamming when you really don't need to.

I know heavy armor is not what you are planning to wear but i wanted to add that just so i could prove a point. Playing a healer is fun, and is definately something you will need to spend time learning, trial and error is key for a healer, some fights just using one spell will work, but others get harder and you have to start mixing and matching and making your own heal combinations.
