Weapon damage or spell damage

I pretty sure this question has been asked before but I'm too lazy to search, but is the damage a spell does based on weapon damage or spell damage? I would think it was spell damage but I've seen posts were they say it is weapon damage. Any helpful answers are appreciated.

Right now, even restoration and destruction staffs are considered weapons for skill damage (or healing) calculations, but this is subject to change in 1.6 very soon.

I honestly can't say that I'm looking forward to that.

    Making DKs even more OP.

Oh I see, they may no longer scale off of weapon damage. Thanks!

Is this going to put stamina builds behind again? Do destruction abilities really need that kind of boost?

Apparently, they have a change in mind that will make certain majica builds even more powerful, while gimping viable hybrid builds. Essentially, the idea is to change all abilities that use majica to scale off of spell power and use spell crit.

How this breaks down, is that DKs that use the 1.5k dps rotation will not have to balance stats, and instead they can go all sp. This may also phase out molten armaments. While having something like supprise attack on a melee bar will no longer be viable, as you will likely not have the spell crit to make it do decent damage.

If we're lucky, the patch will bug it so that destro staff abilities don't benefit from flawless dawnbreaker anymore.

It sounds like you are jealous for some reason. If you have played any other MMOs for any length of time, you will recognize that the FoTM class is always changing. Don't worry. Your favorite class will be on top some day.

    - It makes sense that attacks using magicka are based off magicka pools, spell damage, and spell crit
    - It makes sense that attacks using stamina are based off stamina pools, weapon damage, and weapon crit

I was frankly surprised and dismayed to find this was not so in ESO. How could such a simple mechanic be made so convoluted into the system we have now and why?

I am looking forward to 1.6 where skills can be more easily understood and builds can be streamlined.

    Hey, thanks for replying!

I'm a magica nightblade, my class is already a contender for top place ;)
I could even go stamina build if i wanted and still do great dps.

I'm just a bit curious why having melee class abilities not be able to do decent damage in a melee weapon rotation is a good thing.

Sure, 'it make sense' is as good a reason as any counter argument I can make, but not everything has to be FoTM or top of the game. I'm arguing for the middle man who wants to do something like hybrid their build. If I'm building a melee weapon based build, I want my class abilities to be viable in my rotation with weapon crit. Like things currently are. When they change it, builds will be exclusively one or the other with absolutely no middle room. So those who chose a class, such as nightblade, and want to run a melee based build will be forced into either all weapon or all class skills to be effective at that play-style.

The reason that these values are the way they are, since you are so 'supprised', is simply because they wanted something like a dual wield nightblade, a 2h templar, or really any weapon based character to be able to draw some benefit from their class skills and not have to spec completely into magica to do so. When I build melee, with everything in stam and weapon damage, I can still get my supprise attack to hit for decent enough damage. Same with my ambush.

Once they change it, I will no longer be able to get decent damage off those abilities. Even their reduce armor and boost next attack mechanics will be suspect in my rotation.

I am dreading 1.6 where logical use and mixes of abilities and viable play with both class and weapon abilities will be scrubbed for "better to understand."
