Why channeled skills are stupid

At least as the "bread and butter" spammable skills, especially in melee (!). I don't for the life of me understand the insistence on making us use channeled abilities as the basic spam skills for *all* the stamina weapons, especially when this inherent disadvantage is not balanced by any redeeming qualities (in contrast to magicka builds) at all.

Right now, there are numerous opportunity costs inherent to using channeled abilities:
  1. you can't block while doing it. This is extremely punishing in pvp, and leads to 2 actually:
  2. you can be interrupted and lose your cast, be it from having to dodge or being stunned/knocked back etc. This makes the "downtime" you suffer from being stunned longer in comparison to using instants.
  3. you essentially kite yourself, which is generally acceptable as a tradeoff for ranged skills, but harmful in melee skills (wrecking blow, flurry), which have to stick to their targets.
  4. it makes for harder animation cancelling. Because let's face it, we all do it now.

Magicka skills generally do not suffer from this (crushing shock actually being the benchmark spammable ranged magicka instant), despite being both ranged and generally more effective in a dps role and having the advantage of a seperate resource pool for defensive actions, which still is another unacknowledged design flaw.

    2. is one of the reasons you should always use immovable when you expect (hard-) CC incoming (which interrupt you). Always keep immovable up, I can just write it again and again and again :D

    While this may help against some cc, it's nowhere near as powerful as being able to just block whenever you want, as you spend both stamina and it's activation time on something that is not really helpful if the enemy sees it and just doesn't use cc accordingly.

    Yup, Immovable is your friend, until they nerf it so you have to wear X pieces of heavy armour to use it (which they probably should).

    Immovable -> Place oil pot

    Immovable -> Use siege weapon

    Immovable -> Soul Assault

    Immovable -> Charged Lightning

    Immovable -> Radiate

    Immovable -> Overload

    etc.

    Immovable before doing any action where you can't block.

    Uh, say that to my Remembrance which has quite often saved a group from wiping.

    And as others have stated just use Immovable, it is invaluable for CC control.

    I would say use immovable..... but not all of us want to use it without HA, as, to some of us, it feels dirty, and we refuse to do it.

    I know what you mean though. I had a problem with this last night. I tried to use uppercut against someone with an adamantium stick(:D) only to be interrupted by their block and casting of crushing shock. its pretty annoying sometimes.

    You can still be interrupted while casting with immovable up, you just don't get the stun that comes with it.
