Crafting above Lv 40

Is their any point extending crafting skills such as smithing and clothing above 40? I'm still doing so but can handle grade 9 materials by level 40 and max out all the skills I want.

I don't know whether, as the game progresses, there will be higher level materials.

In alchemy Chemistry III needs skill level 47. Unfortunately, the rest is just for fun and archive.

There is an achievement and dye for each crafting skill to be levelled to level 50.

As you surmised, there is no crafting advantage to advancing to level 50, except the one @diwie pointed out. There are achievements, as noted by @AlexDougherty. ZOS has stated it's intention to add more content to the game, so I leveled to 50 in everything to be prepared if the ceiling is raised. But really, the reason I, and probably a lot of others, went to 50 is like the reason Hillary climbed Everest..."because it's there".

A long time ago (don't remember when), the question was asked "Will crafting go beyond rank 50?" The answer was "Almost certainly". So I expect (someday) for crafting to go to rank 60 or maybe higher so not a bad idea to have it at 50 for when that happens.
