So there once was a thread about comprehensive crafting issues with provisioner, and one of the issues was the usefulness of drinks.

So first, is there anyone out there that finds the beverage buffs to be useful opposed to the food buffs?

From what I have seen it is always more beneficial to have a higher number of stat points than it is to have higher rate of stat recovery. Having a higher overall number of health points means more time to use healing spells or potions. A higher recovery helps regen but could be costly it you get hit with something big and cant recover in time.

So with this in mind, doesn't that make the beverage line of crafting pretty much useless? Perhaps I'm wrong and PvPers out there have found some benefit to regen over max points.

The recipes cost less for beverages and admittedly due to the above philosophy on buffs, I have not tried to sell drink buffs, but I assume the only real marketable buff is the food.

Is this still in the works of being audited? Why not just make drink buffs match the food bonus stats and let the regen get handled by enchants or make a trait adjustment? Then the "considered" issue of drop rates for consummates might be less of a problem, the market wouldn't need to over extend the price of a recipe, and the fact buffs are consumable makes the rarity of tomatoes less of an issue.

I keep the list price of 5 stacks reasonably low for blue food and so it sells alright, but then I run out of materials and have to spend hours farming for standard mats just to re-load the market. Having the drink buffs more useful means prices can stay low, I can turn a modest profit...

... and we can ALL get DRUNK!

Drinks provide a boost to the stat regeneration, which unless you've maxed out the stat is less useful than a boost to the stat. (personally I find my stats regen ok anyway, but the stats need the boost to make surviving happen).

Now when they fix it so you can have both a food buff and a drink buff, then drinks will become important.

People don't use drinks because increase stats, stamina and magicka especially, both increase your usable resource and your damage dealt with skills.

A vr 5 purple drink will give you +8 to all regens, which is not only very low, but isn't nearly as helpful as a purple food. I don't even see people trying to use purple regens at all, because theres not much value in health regen. Magicka/stamina regen drinks will end up winning, whenever they get around to making drink effects stack with food effects.

When they let you take one of each, that alone will instantly make it useful to some degree, because there's no downside to grabbing it. They've already announced a major overhaul for provisioning, so I wouldn't expect to see any changes before then.

For type, I'd think the green with a single-stat boost to either magicka or stamina would be more useful to most PvE builds, but PvP would probably want the combo. Health regen is kind of the *** child stat, and to actually be useful would have to be more than triple what you currently get with it.

Ok. So the answer is the eventual stacking of the two. That was one suggested way to make the drinks useful.

Guess I just keep stacking beverage mats until then.

8 points per two seconds at a softcap of 120+ is barely useful even if it were to stack with food. I think it could be safely increased by quite a bit...

In long fight, its better to have regen over stat increase. As long as you are not overcharged. 8 points per 2 seconds gives you 240 in one minute, so if you are in a heavy fight, you are doing better with drinks. If your fight exceed 2 minutes, don't use food, use drinks.

Without extended heath etc. you might not get into a longer fight. You will not waste as much points from potions also. So even for longer fights food + potions is much better.

Another point against drinks is that there are many abilities that become more effective as your stat increase, but not as your regen values increase.

For example the amount of healing you get from dragon blood increases with max health, so using a health regen drink instead of food, you effectively nerf your heal.

I have enough health without food to last for any fight. Personally, I would prefer having a 8 point regen over the 257 stat pool increase. In a 5 minutes fight, a regen would give me 1400 stat. The regen is always active, the increase in stat pool only counts when you heal up to your max stat. But I guess, in definitive, its a matter of choice. The only draw back is the limit in overcharging, but as long as you are not overcharging, your good with regen.

I'm a healy-type player, and I always prefer the magicka regen drinks when I'm using provisioning stuff.

I've dabbled with both; having a larger magicka pool, and having higher magicka regen. In my very personal experience, I'm able to heal much more effectively and consistently when I have higher regen.

On the odd chance that a couple people take a massive spike of damage, my magicka will still burn down pretty quickly trying to get them back up. But, I've found with a really high regen, that even if my magicka runs out it comes back up extremely fast. That let's me keep healing in the long-run, after the spikey damage has stopped.

That's just my personal experience, though.
