Templar Weapon Questions/Options

prince_machiavelli
Hi all

I decided I wanted to make an alt that was ultimately able to heal. I settled on an altmer templar, and have messed around with a few different weapons and done some research. Essentially, I want him to be able to heal effectively, but still put out some DPS. From a character perspective, I see him being as something of a mage/sword master combo, with his mage abilities being focused on light, rather than conjuration/electro as with the sorceror tree (think 'you shall not paaaaassssss' ;))

Currently I'm running DW, mainly light armour and working on getting magicka regen right up there.

The question is, what weapon to use as the other focus. I'm really tossing up between Bow or Resto staff. I've heard bow can be awesome with knock back abilities combined with the aedric spear knock back. I've also heard resto can be awesome, due to the magicka drain and being able to feed the templar skills.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, can someone answer me this:
other than magicka drain, is there any advantage of a resto staff for healing as opposed to the templar's restoring light abilities? Is there any point in skilling up both of them?

Thanks

The Resto staff also increases all healing on allies under 30% health by 15%, which synergizes pretty well with templar passives. It's also much more efficient to mix templar and resto heals than to go purely with templar heals.
    PS4 / NA
    M'asad - Khajiit Nightblade - Healer
Pakhet - Khajiit Dragonknight - Tank
Raksha - Khajiit Sorcerer - Stamina DPS
Bastet - Khajiit Templar - Healer
Leonin - Khajiit Warden - Tank

Thanks for the advice. What do you mean more efficient in mixing templar and resto heals? Other than the resto staff bonus you've mentioned?

Resto Staff all the way... for sustained fights you are going to have to use the resto heavy attack to get 10% magicka back... Otherwise you are going to drain your magicka really quickly and have no way to efficiently get it back.

If you are casting damaging and healing abilities, you need a resto staff... Personally I run resto staff on both my bars.
    Syndy - VR14 Breton Templar
    Sacrilege
    Daggerfall Covenant

    Warhammer
    Syndia - 100 Zealot, Syndai - 99 Black Guard, Cyndrana - 84 Sorceress

if you want to be a superb healer you need to take up resto staff on top of templar abilities. there is enough skills to do 3 weapons so why not. my templar has leveled 4 weapons. our dps is not great. we are very survivable and sword board can complement nicely as well. i run resto sword board or double resto depending on how i feel like playing.

mixing the heals of both is more efficient because you have hot and group heals from staff that are great and cheaper while having very powerful expensive emergency heals as well from templar line.

This is the sense I've been getting. It seems that the resto staff gives you the HoTs and the templar skills those nice big single heals, as you said.

I've also found that, with the resto staff, I can keep up a fairly steady flow of magicka.

I can see the obvious tank role for the templar but I am trying to stay away from that with this character - I've got a nord dk who tanks pretty well.

Glad to hear that you've levelled ethos extra weapons, I think I'll probably do the same and settle on some favourites a bit later on.

    Thanks for the info

You need Resto staff for resource management. With Templars' lack of magicka recovery through class abilities, you'll rely on the heavy attack 24/7. A combination of Templar burst heals and staff HoTs can work very well if you like that playstyle, but the healing output of the class tree would be sufficient on its own.

The other weapon depends somewhat on the content you want to do and your equipment level. Unless you have pretty good stuff, going for a magicka/stamina hybrid build will result in both being somewhat underwhelming. Gearing for a Resto/Destro staff combo or just going with 2xResto using a dps bar and a healing bar is considerably easier.

That's mostly a concern for vet level group content though, solo and in 1-50 dungeons you should be ok using a stamina weapon even without being in purples or golds.

Yeah I was hoping to offset the magicka recovery issue by going altmer, enchanting and mainly light armour. with the resto staff I can keep healing going pretty steady in dungeons and put out a bit of damage with class abilities when needed, but I can see a breaking point being reached. I guess I see resto being my dungeon role, and maybe soloing with actual stamina weapons .

Resto staff passive Cycle of Life and Combat Prayer give you a significant damage modifier when wielding a resto staff.

We really shouldn't be getting pigeonholed into certain weapon and role types lol shame
Bobbity Boop, this game might become poop, but I'll still play because I'm just a pile of goop!
