Soul Trap unable to crit

Been running around with 41% spell crit and testing it out, I haven't gotten a single crit on Soul trap but I can get them on Degeneration. Is this a bug or intended?

I don't know for sure but I think it might be intended considering that Soul Strike can't critically hit either. Or at least I haven't seen it and I use that ability quite often.

Soul Strike has such ridiculously high base damage and it not being able to crit is fine, Soul Trap on the other hand is weak as hell. 600+ damage instant stun in crystal fragments vs 320 damage 10 second DoT in soul trap. No comparison.

Soul Trap's main function is to fill soul gems. Soul Gems are quite useful and powerful in dungeons and Cyrodil. I really don't think it's meant to do a bunch of damage, or be the killing factor. I only use it to fill Soul Gems by casting it and then dealing my damage dealing abilities. I think at best, Soul Trap is meant to negate any health regeneration.

When they add the enchantment to have weapons fill soul gems too, then I can see Soul Trap being a bit weak. For now, I have another 30 abilities to choose from to fill the slot.

Your comment would make sense if Soul Trap did not have a damage component to it, saying it has a secondary effect does not justify it being unable to critical hit like every other ability in the game. Most of which also have COMBAT useful effects like degeneration's weapon heal. There is already a feat that fills soul gems with a 10% chance off of weapon kills.

So... because Soul Trap deals damage, it should critical. Then I'd have to bring Soul Strike up again: Because it has high base damage, it doesn't justify it not being able to critical hit like every other ability in the game. On the other hand, if Soul Trap didn't do damage, then this discussion would have never come up? Because having Soul Trap do no damage is better than having it do a little?

Degeneration is not an ability available to every player whereas Soul Trap is. If Soul Trap is able to critical, do more damage and have true combat effectiveness, then most everyone would use it.

A 10% chance to fill a soul gem is not sufficient enough to negate the soul trapping ability of Soul Trap; many players will often buy Empty Soul Gems in large quantities and go fill them up. Imagine how much longer it'd take to fill them up if only one out of every 10 NPC's you killed filled them.

I'm not saying I disagree with allowing Soul Trap having more damage. That'd make filling soul gems much easier. I just don't see it being justified to increase the power of Soul Trap. I seriously doubt Soul Trap was intended to use in PVP.

Yes, considering every ability aside from Soul Assault criticals in the game. We are talking 4k damage in 4 seconds versus 320 damage in 10, these numbers based on my VR10 sorcs stats. If Soul Assault crit it would be way over the top as the damage is already to high without crits, soul trap however is probably the lowest DPS skill in the game and once again filling soul gems doesn't justify that. It sure as hell isn't justification for the ability not criting, once again I think it is a bug.

Degeneration is a mages guild ability, you know that means it is available to every player in the game right?

Most everyone would not use soul trap even if it managed even 500 damage over 10 seconds, because that is 50 damage a second and that my friend is not high at all. Right now the most you could get is maybe 350 / 35 damage a second.

The 10% chance is more than enough for the simple fact that every single form of boss or miniboss will drop already filled soul gems, I have had 80+ grand soul gems without buying a single one and the soul gem proc has happened 100s of times in my play time. You are disagreeing that soul trap should crit, bottom line, and I don't think your logic as to why it shouldn't make sense.

I simply don't see any reason that critical should be added to the ability. Consequently, I don't see any reason why it should not be added. I am simply mentioning the possibilities of why it might have been left out intentionally.

If you think it's a bug, then submit a bug report.

Exactly what this post is meant for, perhaps you should read your own signature at this point with even further emphasis on the no real content part.

No mention of a fix for this in a patch note, hoping it was stealth fixed or looked into being able to critical.

necro but i personally think Soul Trap should be dealing more damage at least. at VR 12 even if your only using it for soul farming, a weak 300 over 10seconds dot is pretty poor, i wouldnt even touch soultrap if it wasnt free.

the passives can fill souls making the spell a further waste of hotbar
PLEASE REPLY TO ME WITH @dsalter otherwise i'm likely to miss the reply if its not my own thread
