Sweetmeats

Anybody know how to obtain sweetmeats fast? Any locations or which monster drops them fairly regularly?

Sweetmeats are an ingredient in creating a level ten provisioning meal/drink, therefore they should be available in the first zone. However, as each faction has recipes specific to the races that compose the faction, to reliably find these you would have to search in that specific faction's starter zone. They're certainly not an Ebonheart Pact item (while I have found these... three or so sweetmeats to dozens of other level ten items tells me that it's not an item for any EP recipes), so that leaves either Auridon for the Aldmeri Dominion or Stros M'Kai for the Daggerfall Covenant. I haven't played on either since Beta, so I cannot recall which one it is exactly, my apologies.

You can actually find provisioning items in barrels, sacks and crates. I don't think you can obtain them from mobs... although again, I'm not certain. Going through every such fixture (barrels, crates, sacks, etc) in a town should leave you with a reasonable amount of provisioning items. Perhaps look around an area with level ten mobs, provisioning items I've found share the same levels as the zone.

This one finds them all over Auridon around and above Skywatch. As Omen spoke, Crates, barrels and containers will contain them.

I wanted to make a recipe containing sweetmeats for a level 10 alt, but had been tossing out my low-level food mats for a long while. I read this post, and went to Vulkel Guard and Skywatch and looted every single bag, sack, box, chest, barrel, crate and piece of furniture and got NO sweetmeats at all. I went to the faction starter towns and the next higher-level towns with my higher level characters and also got no sweetmeats.

After literally HOURS of searching, and finally giving up, my husband logged into his characters and did his usual mats/recipe/motif hunting runs in Vulkel Guard, where he promptly got 20+ sweetmeats on his level 18-20 characters in under 10 minutes. (He's a nice guy and handed all of them to me! :)

Apparently sweetmeats only drop for lower-level characters, but only when you reach a level higher than required to consume the food.

This makes no sense. You should be able to obtain mats required for anything you can craft at or even a little before the level you can use them. It would be awesome if this was looked into by the Provisioning Gods, though I imagine they have higher priorities...

It seems a recent patch has changed the loot tables from being within the constrains of the Zone level, to coinciding with character level. If what you mentioned was an intentional change, it's strange that you have to out level the food to be able to find the items. What use is that when there are better tiers of food at levels 15 and 20? Boggles my mind. With every other crafting skill, to my knowledge it's area level restricted - with the exception of water skins and pure water nodes which seem to level to the character.

Perhaps this is how they altered loot tables to permit Veteran Rank provisioning items in Veteran Rank starter zones? I guess this is something I'll have to keep in mind the next time I go on a mass crate raid for provisioning materials.

Well, from what I can tell the provisioning recipes/mats/foods have been character level based(ish) for as long as I've been playing, (which is about a month now).. started finding lvl 5 recipes/mats/food at around level 7, started finding the lvl 10 recipies/mats/food at around lvl 12. It certainly isn't a terribly recent change.

Edit: That said, All my characters are still in the first zone, (finished newb island(s) with all of 'em though), so maybe it used to be that character level used to determine the maximum level of provisioning drops, but not the minimum level, and now it also determines the minimum level? I know my lvl 7/8 guys used to get the first set of mats/recipies in addition to the lvl 5 stuff.

Apologies, I was misinformed. The patch I was referring to only changed Vet Rank areas where players would loot level 1-15 materials, and not the Vet Rank materials that they should have been finding.

A trip to my Alliances starter Zone shows that yes, the materials are still Zone restricted in regards to the base material (like brown malt and thin broth). It's been some two months since I've actively looked for certain level ingredients without just going to the Zone where the level of the food matches (like going to The Rift for Mudcrab Meat), so I cannot say if the additive is purely level related. However, my level 40 has found things like snake sweat (lvl 1 drink), snake venom (level 5 drink) and wild honey (level 10 drink) in the same area.

Thanks for adding some clarity to my confusing post, GnatB.

Edit: I am finding recipes equivalent to my character level, like Kaveh Red, in the starter zone.

Other mats here and there have similar issues. I couldn't find fel hide at an appropriate level for using it for my own armor either. I have no idea if that got fixed in any patches or not, but it annoyed me greatly at the time.

I think that you are mistaken. I am currently running an Alt who was picking up Sweetmeats all of the time up until I went to Grahtwood - yesterday.

RNG (Random Number Generator) is random.

At level 10, nothing. level 11, nothing, but once my alt reached level 12, I found sweetmeats everywhere, I became a virtual sweetmeat douser, but the recipe I had was a level 10 recipe, usable at level 10, and NOTHING resembling a sweetmeat will drop for any level 10 or 11 character.

I am not mistaken. Sweetmeats do not drop for characters below level 12. Are you trying to say you managed to survive in Grahtwood at level 12? Can I watch?

The cooking mats are bound to a region, not to your main level.

I sometimes got sweetmeats from killing sheep.

Considering that sweetmeats are candy, or sugar coated fruit, and sweetbreads are animal product:
"Many people think that sweetbreads are culinary code for calves' brains.

But the term sweetbreads is actually a benign-sounding pseudonym for the paired thymus glands and pancreas of milk-fed veal or calves. (You can also find inferior pork or lamb sweetbreads if you look hard enough.) The rounder pancreas *** near the heart is more prized than the tubular thymus throat ***. The pancreas *** has a more delicate flavor and smoother texture."

I'd venture a guess that the game devs didn't bother to care about stuff like whether black = white, or not.

EDIT: Apparently the word "Gl@nd" is a big no-no for the software.
I'm a bad Bosmer for pointing that out.

    Edit #2:
After my first edit - the '***'s that replaced 'Gl@nd' were replaced with the actual word '***'.
    Go figure.

No, I went to Haven in Grahtwood at L16. I do know that I had Sweetmeats in my inventory around L8, It was an annoyance because I had no recipe to use them with (in fact, I picked up my first Sweetmeats Recipe at L13). I was however picking up a lot of Liver too which requires a L15 recipe and I had one of those. At L10 I had a ridiculous Provisioning skill of about 32 because of the Liverwurst Tart recipe. I topped out the provisioning before leaving Haven.

On a side note, while higher colour recipes are great (I picked up 3 blue recipes before leaving Auridon) they don't have any significant effect on the XP you gain, so if you are just looking to level up Provisioning stick with higher level greens.

Believe what you like but, I am certain that after patch 1.2.3, sweetmeats did not drop for my level 10 or 11 AD character anywhere in in Auridon, but as soon as I hit level 12, they dropped all over the zone.

Sweetbread, Braised Sweetmeats, and Sweetmeat Surprise have always been level 10 recipes, as are their improved versions. It would be good if you could get the necessary materials at that level.

I have to disagree with you on a few things. In relation to the water skins, they do tend to now level with the player. But water nodes still seem to be based more on zone level than player. There are times when I find skins at my level or above crafting wise, but then there are also times I find them below my level but set to the level of the zone I'm in.

As far as sweetmeats go ...

As a level 42 I still occasionally get sweetmeat in containers in Auridon when I'm there. At this point I just stop collecting it. I can get better ingredients for better recipes in higher level zones than what sweetmeat can give me.

Instanced provisioning loot *may* have a minimum/max level based on the zone, but player level also definitely is taken into account.

Seems to be around lvl 7 to get mats for lvl 5 recipies, lvl 12 for lvl 10, and lvl 14 or 15 for lvl 15 recipies. (unless they changed how it works in the last patch, anyways. *just* started getting liver

That said, I think they broke something with Alchemy harvests (which AFAIK are non-instanced). Every once in a while you also get bait, but when I was running around yesterday I got Plump Worms (lvl 15 EP provisioning mat) and Crawdad (lvl 30 AD provisioning mat). And this is with a lvl 14/15 AD char in Auridon. Seems like they may have accidentally added some provisioning items to the bait tables. (unless those mats work as bait too? Can't say as I've tried, I don't bother fishing)

One of the primary reasons I noticed is my add-on is supposed to be automatically destroying bait loot, but those items slipped through so I was getting ready to manually delete them when i noticed they said they were foot mats.

Oh, and yeah, I think non-instanced provisioning (and other crafting) loot, (along with mob loot) is based on the level of the zone/mob. NOT the player level

No, there was always a chance of getting plump worms and crawdads from pulling up food or clothing mats. I was constantly destroying Plump Worms from when I first started 5 weeks ago. My Main who is DC still has a Crawdad from when I pulled up a Water Hyacinth. I thought it might be a rare ingredient but it's actually an AD L35 Ingredient. I really should transfer it to the AD Alt.

*shrug* Doesn't mean it isn't broken. Be willing to bet whomever it was that tuned what is harvestable from those spots thought they were bait.

If you can craft and use an item at a given level, you should be able to gather the materials to do so.

There are items that aren't gatherable (yet) at the appropriate levels.

    'nuff said.
