Provisioning Nerf

WelkinDust
I have to say I'm extremely disappointed at this part of today's patch notes:
  • The sell value of food that you create has been reduced to be more in line with other crafting skill lines.

Let's face it, you really couldn't make THAT much off of provisioning before -- yes it was a decent source of income but in no way was it in need of this "fix." I maxed out Chef and Brewer just so I could make a bit of extra gold vendoring my creations. Now I feel like those points are wasted, since the value of food has been cut approximately in half. Was this really a necessary change?? Why don't you increase the sell value of all the other crafting skill lines instead? The gold amounts you receive for selling armor and such is abyssmal -- and now that we can't farm public dungeon/delve bosses, how are we supposed to make gold? Aren't you basically promoting the gold sellers with crap like this? With the amount of gold sinks in this game, I was already struggling, and now it'll be even harder to keep up with extra inventory and bank space needs as I level.

I really like a lot of things about this game but the buggy launcher, numerous bugged quests, falling through the world, serious lack of inventory/bank space and now stupid "fixes" like this are seriously making me reconsider my subscription.

TLDR: If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

It sounds like your more upset that they closed a potential economic exploit because of how easy it is to make large quantities of food, and then sell them for far more gold to vendors then what armor / weapons could be sold for.

Perhaps you should join a few trade guilds, and then list your food on them for reasonable prices. I also fail to see how they are catering to gold sellers, as the food selling back to vendors was a big part of that, along with bots and players farming end bosses in public dungeons non-stop.

Finding weapons / armor in your adventures and selling them to vendors, or better yet, breaking them down and selling the resources, is a decent way to make gold in this game.

  • WelkinDust
I don't see how vendoring one serving of level 35 food at 6g was a "potential economic exploit." Sure I can make 4 servings at once but that's still only 24g, and it takes a decent amount of time and effort to run all over the place, looting everything you can find for ingredients. And here I'm trying to save up for the next inventory upgrade which costs 11,900 gold. Do the math.

With the food value nerf and being unable to "farm" public dungeon/delve bosses for gear to sell, it's going to take a LONG time to reach that goal now.

I am with the OP here.. they nerfed provisioning when it went from beta to live and no-one complained (mainly because it was justified) but this nerf I don't agree with.. I was selling food and drink items I wasn't going to use for *maybe* 4g per serving at level 12.. I really don't see how that was excessive..
  • ShallowTech
Agreed, it takes a lot of effort for a legitimate player to get the recipes and ingredients to make food, then the food is not worth that much to begin with and now it is being lowered further... Some of the changes being made are not very good, I think focusing on all the glitches would be time better spent. I really did not make that much off of food but it helped get a little extra gold. I also feel like my skill points have been wasted. If I want to reset them it will cost a lot more gold.

Hmmm, could Zenimax be affiliated with the gold selling sites… maybe that is why I keep getting some much f’ing junk mail in my game mailbox… How about fixing botting, spamming, glitches, etc. and stop taking from legitimate player. Shoot, I was not even able to get logged back in today.

I'd like to note that I read about the nerf to sell prices on food prior to server shutdown and proceeded to clear out all the provisioning materials in my inventory and vendor them

I had enough materials enough materials with Chef/Brewers to make about 1200 food and 1200 drinks (you get 4 food/drink per craft w/ chef/brewer maxed) and they sell for 5 gold each (level 20-25) at the vendor made about 12,000 gold. I think I was hitting the "R" button to craft for a good 90 minutes (wasn't timing it exactly)

As for time to farm this amount of materials, I made no special effort to farm them, just what I find as I go. I'm leveling two characters at the same time, and looted most of the provisioning containers I've come across, one character has completed Stormhaven and the other is about half way through it.

Though this change sucks, I personally would have liked to see the opposite happen, have other crafts vendor prices increased to be more in line with provisioning, not that I vendor a lot from other crafts (mostly deconstruct for skill ups) but I've noticed that a white piece of gear, a green piece of gear, and a blue piece of gear all have about the same vendor price give or take a few gold.
Between repair costs, heavy fees for guild stores/CoD charges, bank/bag expansions, re-spec, at this point in the game feels as if I have plenty of gold sinks already, though I cannot speak for end game

Yeah it was a little too good, I had 3/3 chef/brewer and in the 30's each barrel, sac, basket, etc you looted essentially contained 12g.

No other crafting skill had this kind of income.

Exactly. It needed to be fixed for balance reasons (and I say that as someone who also used this to make some coin).

Honestly, I just want a way to not spend the 90 minutes hitting R over and over. I mean seriously? Who in their right minds thought that up? Nerf the *** out of the vendor value. Just don't waste my time crafting the items.

My level 12 char had just made 50 Provisioning and made enough gold to make armor repairs. She had one last hurrah, at least. But it's on to the next craft, so it's not that bad. Make double if in a bind.

They really did need to fix the prices, but they only fixed it half way. Provisioning is the only crafting (aside from alchemy which only distinguishes between level and not quality) that crafting a higher quality item (blue/purple) does not increase the value.

I understand why they nerfed it, however it was like it was the entire beta/PTS. It should have been done before it went live, as it was no secret that Provisioning was a good way to make some extra cash. These kind of nerfs set a bad precedent imo.

So far of what I saw, the sell values were cut by half.

I really don't understand the logic of some people of considering "an exploit" using the skill points to make the crafting profession more profitable. We can see them here justifying the unjustifiable and in the hireling thread.

Seriously, what else you expect?; same profit?.

No, I'm not looting more than anyone else, I get more money BECAUSE I've spent the darn skill points in the crafting line and if I get "good" profit from it, MAYBE it is because I've to spent 1/2 hour managing the darn inventory and smashing the R button instead of staying AFK in some cave.

"potential economic exploit" give me a break. Some people really need to buy an island and be lost in it.

Either this nerf was needed, or -every- other craft needed buffed.

Provisioning is so -ridiculously- easy to raise, too, compared to the other crafts. 0-40 in Provisioning took what... an hour or so? Why not just let everyone start out at max?

Sorry OP - you make a lot of excuses to hack on the nerf, but what you don't realize is that a huge number of players were using this loophole, and using it hard. While some folks might complain about sitting around hitting R for 60 minutes in order to make a few k gold, there are tons of folks doing just that and not complaining one bit - while none of the other crafts have that luxury, nor the mega-speedy leveling benefit, either.

Provisioning really needed a double nerf: skilling up speed, and food sell-cost. Just my opinion, tho.

Well, I expected a nerf but the 50% price cut seems rather harsh. There's no point now in crafting anything but the stuff you actually use. No one buys food/drinks of the guild stores anyway and selling it to a vendor is no longer worth the time invested.

Apparently nothing. 20 minutes ago I visited the Emberflint Mine because I needed items for deconstruction. The boss area was flooded with bots; some sorcs killed them many times >:) but they respawned over and over.

The irony of the story is that, while I was killing mobs, I leveled then I stop getting loot. That is the sad truth, real people get punished by the nerf bat while bots stay in business.

Yeah I heard they were supposed to introduce a timer to public dungeon and delve bosses so you could only get loot from them every 20 minutes or something. Guess they decided to leave that for a later patch.

Provisioning was an easy way to make money, without even having to grind for it. Just in the normal order of play, I'd easily make a few k every few hours when I got back to town and crafted all the food and drink and sold it. From something that I originally started using just for the buffs, it quickly became something I was making an easy buck off. So I don't mind this nerf, one of my friends was incredibly frustrated at how quickly I was making more gold than him because of how easy provisioning was.

This is sad to hear. I was doing it because I like finding recipes and such. I don't think I have made any money really off of food. The ingredients are time consuming to gather, I'd probably be 40 by now but I get so distracted by barrels and having to go back to town to empty my bags :)

You answered your own question here. Obviously, vendoring your creations, rather than using them or selling them to players was not their intended mechanic, and was being abused.

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

I made a fair amount of money off of provisioning... with the 4x food / drink per recipe. Every time my bank and bags are full, I'd swap around items to put all the food mats in the bank and get my provisioner to make food and vendor it. Depending on how much was there, I'd make 1000 - 3000 g per time. Of course, that was getting better as I got into higher level areas and found better food mats.

That seems a bit overpowered in wealth generation and, I guess, it was. However, couple points here. I put a lot of skill points in provisioning specifically for the reason of making money from it. What's wrong with that? Is that an exploit? I don't think so. Secondly, I search everything I find. I stop at every bag, every barrel, every dresser, etc. I'm a hoarder and that's fine. That's how I play but it should be noted that it is time-consuming. Much time is lost with that constant barrel searching? Only a few seconds each time but that adds up. I can kill another monster in that time and level up faster. In effect, doing the way I was doing it, trading skillpoints and time for gold is in direct contrast to my leveling up.

My main character is only level 33. I'm not V5 or whatever. I certainly put enough time in the game that I could be. But I'm playing differently. More of a focus on money than leveling. I wanted the 42,700 g horse. Provisioning paid for it. I wanted 110 bag inventory. Provisioning paid for it. I wanted a lot of bank space. Provisioning used to paid for it but now only 50% of what I got before.

So, no, I don't like the nerf. And no, I don't think vendoring provisioned food/drink is an exploit. It's how some of us have chosen to generate wealth. And even before the nerf it probably isn't the best way to get money anyway. I'm sure powerleveling and getting high end gear and selling it brings in more money than food does.

Kind of silly IMHO, what's the point of this mess anyhow? We want you to sell provisions to other players? Fine, make it possible to do that. Guilds as they stand now actually have about 30 active players per each, as every guild I've been in has officers that immediately add all alts to the guild - thus, 30 actives, and you only get to sell to one of those groups. Me, I put stuff up to auction just to get it out of my bags, KNOWING it's a total waste of anything besides emptying the bags. I think I've sold maybe 3 food stacks in a month now. The stuff I've tried to sell just comes right back in the mail a month later, and I vendor it. Waste of time. Not worth even CONSIDERING as a source of income. Crap, I've pretty much given up on the whole guild system, truly. Barely worth the effort. Guilds as they now exist are just totally broken for all but a very few.
