How do you become successful at PVP if you have never done it before.

thompson.rob23_ESO
Hi All,

I'm loving this game and I hope that you all are as well. I got brave last night and decided to try the Alliance war out last night. Well it hurt.... a lot.... Do you guys and girls have any advice on how to be successful?

    Keep playing and remember it's just a game. Practice is the key to developing any skill.

    Everybody dies in Cyrodiil. You'll have good days and bad days. Keep at it and you'll improve, but you'll still die in Cyrodiil. That's ok.

    Practice, talk to players you know are experienced PvPer's, try to find an experienced PvP guild also, be observant and aware of your surroundings in Cyrodil at all times. Keep at it and don't get discouraged. You will get better with time and having a want to win attitude helps also.

    I'd be willing to help you theory craft, but you would need to let us know what abilities you have unlocked and your level/class/armor progression/weapon proficiencies.

    PvP is much different then PvE although there are some skills that are transferable and in general there are a few different things to consider;

    Direct Burst damage - doing the most damage as possible in the shortest amount of time
    Crowd control - AOE and CC snares/slows/roots to trap squads of enemies and contribute to their mass demise
    Support - keeping yourself and allies alive + buffed up for an advantage.
    Seige - securing resources around keeps and guarding them with small detachments or preparing ambushes for counter attacks.

    There are many possibilities, the best rounded PvP build is like catching a rainbow, what works for some may not work for you.

    When arranging your skills for PvP try to balance it out and plan ahead similar to this;
    Melee - start with a gap closer to get you to your target, 2 high damage abilities, a CC ability, a self heal, and a supporting ultimate ability that either deals massive damage or heals or provides a utility to escape.
    Ranged - root/knockdown/stun, damage over time, AOE, self heal, and a utility skill to help you escape. Also a different ultimate that either gives you survivability, high burst damage, or the ability to escape.
    Support - AOE CC/dmg + heals/buffs + utility + Ultimate.

    It really depends on how you like to play, and whats at your disposal. Do you want to pick off single targets while they try to escape? Do you want to run with a "zerg" and throw down CC/AOE damage contributing to large battles? Do you want to fight up close and personal face to face, testing you skill and resource management against similarly minded players? Do you want to ambush unsuspecting targets, thinning the herd then disappearing again?

    Look for good players of the same class, ask for advice (check out guides on the forums or in game).

    Join an active pvp guild.

    Don't try to rush into fights that are clearly stacked against you.

    And like was already said, despite everything, you will still die from time to time.
    It's pvp, if no one died how boring would it be?

    Things I wish I known when I started PvP'ing:

    1. PvP deaths aren't always a bad thing. It allows you to respawn at any keep your faction holds (unless under attack), it also allows you to respawn at any forward camp. So if you want to reach a keep quickly when transit line is cut of, than go suicide at the closest enemy resource. Dying from opposing factions NPC's counts as PvP deaths, so free transport yay.

    2. People saying stuff like "attacking Ash type 123" are using an addon with auto invites. By typing 123 in zone chat you get automatically invited to the group. Anyone can join.

    3. Always jam down block in cluster/zerg fights. Keep the key pressed down constantly, while casting skills. As soon as you're finger starts slipping you will die or get knocked down or in the air. Same goes for crouch. Do it as soon as you dismount in enemy territory.

    4. You can actually use cc-break against Negate Magic. Popular doom skill used by sorcerers, but more frequently spammed by OP enemy NPC's.

    5. If someone attacks you while mounted, than dismount asap and block. You will probably die if you try to ride away. The dismount animation, when the horse falls over you takes a few seconds to shake of, it gives the player plenty of time to kill you.

    Also get a Restoration staff, even if you're not going to fight with it. Spamming HoT's it's the best way to build up Ultimate before facing the enemy.

    Die, die a lot. Try to learn something every time you do. Try to use what you learned during your next encounter.

    Don't get frustrated, get determined.

    This is all very solid advice. 3 and 5 are essential - internalize those asap. I'd like to add one thing to what I said earlier: get ranged. Bow is best, but magic works too. You just can't beat having some versatility. @eliisra is dead-on about the restoration staff, too. Also, if you're low level and can't afford siege, just spam the aoe heal with the restoration staff or hit a cluster of vets with Combat Prayer - you'll be helping your team, trust me.

    Remember, everyone can help their faction in Cyrodiil in some way or another. Everyone.

    the biggest tip you could receive here, is DONT ZERG.

    you will never develop skill while zerging, and will be free rps for any skilled group.

    Find a group that uses voice chat, and determine their skill level. if its too low, then leave and find another. most good guilds dont recruit at all, so you will need to seek them out. watch for 4mans in cyrodiil, they are your best bet at finding skilled players here.
