When Does Crafting Become Worth It?

So I've realized that for the non-VR content, crafting is pretty much pointless. The game is fairly easy, and you receive enough gear from drops/quests, and you're always replacing gear. In addition, you can level crafting from just deconstructing

Does this change at VR ranks? Once I hit VR1, should I start crafting my own armor/weapons?

I know at endgame I'll be crafting because I want full legendary, but don't want to waste time/gold/skillpoints creating sets of gear that is just going to get replaced and isn't really needed.

Thanks

hmm it's extremely rare that I replace a piece of gear I crafted myself with a piece of dropped gear tbh..

most of the dropped gear I either decon or use to research new traits.

although I will say that keeping up with my upgrade components need is a #$#@$ (I upgrade all gear I craft at least to green, shield, staff sword and breastplate usually to blue)

I use my vr7 to craft gear for my alts, now I can wear those set crafts on my alts and enjoy their bonuses, that I couldn't do the first time

Some of them look really sweet, like Vampire Kiss Set, makes me feels like im in the movie troy :D

I know how to researcu a trait like chargee, infused and such. But how do we research the set types.

Is there a way. Seems so as they show up but I dont have knowledge. I guessing its not the modif books.

I think the number of traits researched on each individual weapontype/armourpiece is what makes them show up on those special crafting tables and lets you craft the special sets. Some of those sets only require you to have three traits researched, other demand (a lot) more.

Motifs have no bearing on crafted sets. All you need, is to go to the specific location(s) for the desired set and to also meet the minimum number of researched traits for the items that you wish to craft.

For example, you shall need to have to have researched a minimum of 6/8 traits for the dagger to create a "Night Mother's Gaze" dagger.

the special set tables, are crafting stations around the world

Spoiler contains locations of Deshaan Set Crafting Stations, just so you can get an idea where to look, they are on every map

In the Vet ranks yes its a bit more usable as you swap armour less often.

But I've been crafting stuff since my 20's because you can make better and it lasts a lot longer. I had a sword I made from about level 25 well into the late 30's because nothing I was picking up matched it.

Plus crafting covers a wide area, I was using food/enchanting very early on as well from maybe level 2.

so yeah, u need to have crafted 3 traits in every piece, to make a whole set, you can also have researches just a few of them, but have to be 3 traits or more

i waited till vr1 before crafting my purple sets. but theres no reason you have to wait that long to make blues.

a nice divines or impentrable set with some of the early 2/3 trait bonus's goes a longway. and a training set will speed ya along especially if you mix armor types.

Crafting IS worthy at levels below VR. You can actualy make some good gear and update it every level.
But after VR all the crafted items is nothing compared to looted set items.

But after VR all the crafted items is nothing compared to looted set items.
    - Even if the gear is better, have to factor in skillpoints lost that could be used towards combat when low level. Does the better gear offset the less effective combat? Perhaps, perhaps not, but it's something to consider.

    - If the game is pretty easy even with non-crafted gear, what's the point? The content is easy with quest gear/drops, you're constantly replacing gear, and losing gold & losing materials for endgame crafting (improvement mats). In addition, you can level crafting by just deconstructing, so not falling behind too much by not crafting

For me, it's just a question of whether I should wait until VR10 to start crafting, or start somewhere in the VR. I'm not sure how difficult the game becomes at VR level + will have alot more spare skillpoints for crafting.

    - there are so many skillpoints in the game.. I wouldn't know what to do with half of them if I didn't invest in crafting

Torug's pact set is VERY strong for any dps oriented character, be it nightbalde assassin or dragon knight heavy armor 2h. Shalidor's curse is also pretty good but will be a while until people get the 8 trait sets.

Most sets in the game are fairly weak except a select few, and those that are dropped are also level locked. If you want complete control and also slightly stronger stats, crafting is the way to go.

Well, from my experience, the "real" crafting - clothing, blacksmithing, woodworking IS NOT worth it. You generally don't have enough improvement materials to craft your own set, let alone try to sell something you craft.

The best you can do with them is selling white items to guild stores for people to buy and research.. but don't count on making more than 400g per item, it's more like 150-200 on average (those Trait stones are worth more than you sell those items for).

On the other hand, Alchemy, Provisioning and mainly Enchanting are really good for making money.
    - alchemy makes money literally out of thin air
    - provisioning blue/epic recipes are really damn rare after all those drop rate nerfs, so people who have them already profit from them
    - Enchanting is the "ultimate" profession - EVERYONE needs legendary glyphs in endgame (VR10 right now, soon to be more).

If you're going to depend on random drops then prepare to die (a lot) at higher levels. The ability to craft my own stuff including a few of the worthwhile game sets has saved my main a lot of grief. You can also give crafted pieces the traits that you want instead of just using what drops.

There are good dropped sets but you'll need the crafting materials to upgrade them. Once acquired you need to get all the use out of them you can. I acquired the Warlock set at VR2 and I intend to upgrade it and keep it thru VR8 at least.

huh? i have at least a full stack of green/blue upgrade mats for each profession.

and by the the time i was vr1 i had enough purples for a full set of armor. thats without buying any.

With my luck, I rarely get any items 'worth it' as I level. My blacksmithing is 50 and I have six traits on each heavy armor item. I survive pretty well with crafted gear.

I have yet to find a sword that's equivalent to my V7 purple.

I am VR10 I have a legendary destro staff and full epic armor with sets and all, I for a fact do not PvP at all and I fill most of my time with farming dungeons. I have for 2/3 VR10 group dungeon all the achievements and I've ran 1 of the 3 I would say over 30 times! I've received numerous epic drops but none worth replacing anything.
Just because you do not get a set worth of items and even the sets that you get either have a locked enchantment that you do now want or a *** set bonus.
So yes, crafting is worth it. And Enchanting especially!

Also, at this level and with this many hours played you end up with alot of improving materials so when VR12 comes out I will have enough to make all armor legendary (not that this matters much armor wise unfortunately..) aswel, already 120+ dreugh wax!

Improvement materials literally fall out of the raw materials when you refine them if you have 3/3 in extraction. Get out there and gather a few hundred and try again… I have stacks of the first three levels from extraction of ore and gear alone.

Alchemy indeed. It makes money, but everyone is mastering it because it is so easy, so don't count on it making you rich much longer.

BLUE recipes are not that rare, you just can't expect to log in and out to refresh all the loot able items like you may have been before, and way more containers have "empty" or lock picks now. I am finding them regularly, I open everything.

Enchanting is the hardest, I'll give you that… but legendary Glyphs, if they are overpriced, are for suckers. Have you compared the stats on purple glyphs to gold glyphs? Not enough to make anyone but a min-maxer get giddy there.

Crafting is worth it. It's something to play with, put points in, keep track of, craft fillers for missing good gear, craft sets, craft extra materials to level the skill and then sell the gear to a vendor or trade for inspiration gains, raise the value of current gear or found gear, etc etc etc… not to mention a head start on anything coming down the road like Jewelry...

    My take on crafting ...

I only use armor and weapons I craft. They get changed out every 2 levels and hardly need repair. What I find out in the game is either above or below my level making it worthless for item replacement.

I'm not in VR zones yet so I don't know about them but this is the first game since SWG that I or another player craft all the equipment I use.

So for at least initial leveling purposes, crafting is very useful.

In the VR levels I am wearing all set crafted gear. There are good dropped sets scattered randomly thoughout the VR levels depending on your class, but they are hard to obtain and you can't upgrade them every level. With the new craglorn crafted sets being better than the current ones, crafted gear will be the way to go. The trick is having a lot of traits researched.

Crafted gear remains better than nothing until you find all the pieces for some of the OP dropped or cyrodil purchased set items in the game that suit your build better... Many of the crafted sets are just plain lacking.

Crafted gear is a lot better than Quest-found or dungeon drop gear that much is certain. You cant Change the enchants on those and the trait might not be to your liking, but you can customize all that with crafting.

From personal experience, I have NO idea what the OP is talking about. I've ben making most of my own and my husbands clothing, weapons and food since day 1. Crating was useful immediately, and has never stopped being useful to me. I just hit lvl 48, and gave in and made myself some really gorgeous Primal robes (blue), and the entire matching set in green. I'm hoping it will last me through Vr1. Oh, and I enchant about 1/2 of my own gear as well.

As for food, I make enough to keep myself, my hubby, and even a few friends I've made supplied at all times, plus making enough money selling the extras (and purples, since I was lucky enough to get my hands on a couple of these) to buy at least 2 of the rare motifs with LOTS of gold left over.

Crafting is awesome in this game, and FAR from useless. The truth is, crafting is probably one of the reasons I'm still playing. It makes me play slower (gathering and exploring, deconning, and just enjoying allthe cotent at an ice slow pace), so I'm not V10 and bored, plus I have this internal mini game that I just LOVE.
