Give crafters a job

A great way for crafters to be able to make money would be to let them repair other player's equipment. There would need to be a system set up so people didn't scam each other, but I don't think that would be too difficult.

Crafters could offer their services just like vendors do now, but they could offer cheaper prices or even higher prices if it was in an area that no vendors were around (convenience up-charge!). The crafters would of course have to still pay a materials fee or use the crafting mats they have to repair player's equipment, but it would be cheaper than the vendor's prices so they could make a profit.

This idea would of course lower the amount of money sink, but not a significant amount since the material fee to the crafters would still be there. What do you guys think?

EDIT 5/22/14 - By the way, I am not a high leveled crafter. I just think it would be a good idea to see this in game.

I figured they wouldn't want to take away the gold sink which is why I pointed out that they could still charge a materials fee to the crafters or just make them use their crafting mats which is still a gold sink ;)

This would expand crafting to having more of a use in the game which is needed especially now since Craglorn will bring the best gear as mob drops.

You are still removing it in essence. The material used is removed from the economy and upon use there is no trace. Unlike an piece of gear where it can be broken down again for materials after use. ZOS should just make it cost quite a bit of material. They can still add gold cost to crafters making it themselves just would be minimal. If they would make gear durability of the item itself instead of just the armor rating to the point it would be destroyed then it would be a better system. Were repairing at the vendor will completely repair the item to its max durability but a repair kit would lower the life durability by x amount. There does have to be a trade off somewhere.

Obviously you are not understanding what I am saying. The gold sink will still be there. The crafters would still have to either pay a materials fee (ding ding ding! gold sink) or use their own materials (ding ding ding! gold sink) to repair the armor.

In truth the value cost needs to change. I find it's simpler to replace the items rather than repair them. I mean Enchantments, for instance, if I pay 200 for the Glyph but 500 for the soulgem it's easier to replace the glyph. Same with armour, 150 to buy a light armour but 400 to repair it? pffft.

Replacing items instead of repairing works well in the low levels, but when you get to higher levels it is definitely worth repairing your equipment. It is hard to get some items and you end up paying more and taking more time to buy a new set instead of just simply repairing it.

As for the soul gems, I believe these prices should probably be lowered for vendors or they need to drop less often. Right now they are a pretty common drop so people rarely have to buy them from a vendor and if people do run out they can buy them from other players for much less.

You could just allow crafters to create repair kits. Make them use whatever base materials (ie Iron ingots 1-10) and sell those on the market. Would not be a huge thing to add to the game either since they are there already

I haven't noticed that. It might just be my attitude towards the set items though, Crafted Sets are great if a pain to develop the skills for but sets built from item drops (Knightmare for instance) just leave me cold, I just process those into materials.

My main issue with rebuilding my armour is trying to get the darned materials, metals, woods and leathers are generally easy unless an area is busy with vestiges but cloth plants seem to be difficult to find a lot of the time.

Obviously you are not understanding what I am saying. The gold sink will still be there. The crafters would still have to either pay a materials fee (ding ding ding! gold sink) or use their own materials (ding ding ding! gold sink) to repair the armor.

I understand completely, you are trying to replace the existing system and lessen the gold cost to the player. Even if they adopted the system you are proposing, the gold cost would still be in there, for it to do what the designers intended. So you would be adopting a new and imho more cumbersome system to achieve an identical result, which is removing X gold from the system.

Thematically I, as a crafter, would prefer to be able to repair my own equipment, but it's cleaner for the designers to do it this way. It is a variable they can control directly, and they can modify it, by either decreasing the cost, if it is removing gold too quickly or by modifying item decay, so you need to repair less often.

I appreciate what you are wanting to do, but the only reason to do that, aside from a thematic reason, is to shift where the gold is coming from, the existing system works fine for that and doesn't involve there needing to be a player interaction.

As to using your own materials, though that is technically a gold sink, it's a tertiary sink, and its cleaner for them to use coin directly than involving materials and material equivalence into the process.

I am not asking for the current system to be removed so it will still be there for the people that don't want to find a player crafter.

Of course it will be more difficult for the developers to allow player crafters to repair gear, but isn't this 2014? It really shouldn't be that difficult and it would make the game more realistic (I can create a V10 legendary item with unbelievable stats, but I have to go find a low level NPC crafter to repair it for me?)

LOL, I'm vr8 at the moment and I have so much unused skill points ... up to ~20, considering 3 professions fully leveled and active, 2 full weapon trees, full light armor tree... and 2 class trees ...

So, basically, following the original idea of the post, anyone should be able to fix their gear.... for free (except the materials cost, that is out of the account due to the materials availability literally everywhere in the world)...

    not going to happen

What the?... Why did you go into your life story about skill points?

Anyway, try reading my post one more time so you actually understand what I am suggesting then you may post again so it is hopefully relevant.

m8, it's all about the skill points.

literally everyone is able to level up and use 3 (or even more) professions simultaneously, without any serious impact on the main skill lines. Every character is able to do so.

Can you see the key part of this ? yea, the skillpoints...

Basically, the idea is nice, due to the players interactions part, but pointless due to the number of available skill points in the game.

You still have to raise the levels to use the crafting skills though. You can't make top tier gear without training the skill. Not everyone trains crafting so this idea would still be useful and give crafters another way to interact and make a little profit.
