Why can't I improve items I'm currently using?

Why do I have to take gear off in order to improve it, and don't give me none of that BS that I have to take it off before I can actually use it cause it would be silly and immersion breaking to improve something without taking it off first when I can improve items that are sitting in my bank miles away in a city and I'm at a crafting station in the middle of nowhere. So why can't I just improve the stuff I have on?

I would assume it's meant to be an extra layer of protection against accidentally deconstructing the gear you're wearing. If they allowed you to improve gear you were wearing, it would also allow you to deconstruct the gear you're wearing. Imagine all the extra help tickets they'd have to handle and all the whining here on the forums from all the people that carelessly decon gear and mistakenly end up deconning the gear they have on.

It makes sense and it's really not a big deal to just unequip what you have on, improve it, then put it back on again.

Agree and I like it. Couple of times I have deconstructed an item similar to my equipped and had a "oh #@$%" moment

    Phew!

I use exclusively crafted gear and have an addon to tell me what traits I've researched, so any gear I'm wearing obviously has already been researched thus no worry about accidentally deconstructing and don't have to give it a second thought, if this were built into the UI there would be no problems, stop making me go through the hassle of taking off all of my gear to improve it and then go hunting through my inventory to find what I just had on.

Re-read my post. This isn't about specifically you, it's about the majority of players who may not be as careful about deconstructing as you may be.

The minor inconvenience of un-equipping gear to improve and then re-equipping it is far outweighed by the potential complaints due to people being careless and destroying their equipped gear.

Re-read what I said, this is about everyone, that addon should be built into the ui and there would be no problems and gets rid of this inconvenience. And could be expanded on further allowing you to mark items you specifically do not want to deconstruct.

The reason you have to take it off is because it has a chance to be destroyed during the improvement process if you don't use enough improvement mats to make it 100%. That is why you have to take it off.

. . .That doesn't make any sense. At all. Who cares? So what? If it fails the item is destroyed, it'll be destroyed if you fail regardless if you have the item equipped or not.

Okay now here's my idea, next to the item you want to deconstruct or improve you get 3 little dots, dot 1, if the dot is highlighted green you have not researched this item, so you might wanna save it, dot 2 safety mark, set by you by right clicking an item and safety marking it, highlighted white, dot 3 duplicate highlighted yellow, you have multiple items in your inventory with this particular trait on this particular piece of equipment(I have 2 daggers with the sharpening trait, both are marked by the yellow dot)

It makes plenty of sense. You can't do it from a coding prospective it will invite issues with duping or other hacks. Plus there would be other unknown issues with it updating stats properly. There are too many things that "could" go wrong and not worth the hassle than simply taking the gear off like the developers have done with the mechanic currently. Don't shoot the messenger. Just stating why it is. Just because you don't like the truth doesn't make it less than truth.

I'm thinking it might be kind of difficult to black smith armor while your wearing it... Just sayin'.... Quit being lazy, take it off, improve it, put it back on. Simple.

I'm thinkin it's pretty hard to get materials and items sitting in my bank in a city miles and miles away and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, we should all have to manually go to our bank and collect items out of it whenever we want to craft.

Just wanted to say I can understand the bank thing. I mean magic, nuff said. Same principle that allows the bank items to be accessed from any bank in the universe. And it's easily acceptable to me that this is the case when you live in a world where gods talking to you is a normal thing and people projecting themselves or talking to spirits from thousands of years ago.

But the improving on yourself thing? You go put on some armor and start slamming your chest or head with a hammer. Or shove a sewing needle in there. Let me know how that works for ya.

Mainly putting my two cents in since you already brought up the subject of immersion.

Well why are you not improving it before putting it on?

Sorry what does it matter how the mechanic does it?

Because I never had it off in the first place? Craft it, upgrade it green, come back later when I have the mats to upgrade it.

Unless it is otherwise ever stated that this is in fact a case of magical banks, then I refuse this answer. I have magical equipment on, I take blows to the head daily, I'm sure I can take one from myself while improving that helm.

Because of the possibility of you failing, and destroying the item, and not realising, and going out into battle without your helmet/sword/armour.

Except that when you improve an item it'll either show up in the middle of your screen and the item will be glow blue and the color of it's name will change to whatever you upgrade it to, and if you fail it's high lighted red. If you've ever crafted and upgraded anything you'd know this, it's pretty hard to miss.

I have crafted and improved, but I've never had it appear in the middle of the screen, just disappear or reappear on the list with the new quality colour (and stats).

Maybe it's my addon but I distinctly recall this happening even before I downloaded the addon whenever I craft something or improve it, the icon of the item, or whatever you want to call it, shows up in the middle of the screen and tells me whether or not I successfully improved an item. I'm going to go screenshot it so you know exactly what Im talking about

Aah, I just get a brief flash, don't actually see the item like that, just a brief blue or red flash, followed by the item disappearing/reappearing in the list, might be my system.

Thanks for the info on what I should be seeing.

Maybe it is rather fast, I don't know, I've always been able to tell I'd say it maybe lasts about 2 seconds before it fades, and that's enough time for me.

Yes, I run with about 100 full slots of inventory, there's no room for me to be taking things off without deleting or selling items I'm trying to save and with so much clutter it's hard to find the items I just had equipped.
