This is a post I made on Reddit that a lot of people seemed to like so I thought I would share it here also:
VR1-4:
- Complete all Almanac quests for the skill points and access to VR6+ zones. They also give some very reasonable experience points compared to some of the side quests which will give you 1/10th rewards for 100% of the effort. It's highly preferable to find a regular partner to work with.
- Create a group in every zone to do all the world bosses and dolmens (zone chat will normally always find you people to do this with or a group you can join). Very good exp from doing this!
- Same thing for the public dungeons
- Complete a few delves (solo dungeons) for good measure
- Start adding competent social players to your friends list for future groups! This is an mmo with group content and you will need them!
VR 4-5:
Complete Fungal Grotto, Banished Cells and Spindelclutch. Fungal Grotto is the hardest by far but is doable with decent players and a good composition. This is where that friends list of competent players comes in. If they have bad equipment and do not know how to play that well you simply wont have a good time. Do them at least once each for the quest exp and then complete them some more times taking advantage of your experience in how to beat each encounter. There is very decent exp to be made from dungeon clearances. The loot is also tailored for VR5+ and if you can get some of the better items it will give you a step up at VR6+. If your the person that leads the group and knows the encounters ahead of time (the internet is your friend) people will want to group with you again. If you get good enough you can also start thinking about getting the VR points from the achievements such as doing a speed run (complete the dungeon in 20 minutes or less). Probably the easiest one to start with will be Banished Cells.
VR 6-8+:
World bosses, dolmens, Public dungeons, delves and then the Almanac quests as you feel like them (skill points are worth getting eventually so you may as well do it now and gain the experience towards your rank also). When you get to about VR7+ start looking for people doing quick clearances of Wayrest sewers dungeon which is currently the easiest of the VR10 loot dropping dungeons. Darkshade and Elden Hollow are doable also but will require a slightly better group. If you get in a group of VR10 players who are doing speed clearances you will make some extremely good experience very fast.
Further advice:
- VR content is not like regular content. A single group of 3 basic mobs can kill you easily if you think to just face roll through it like you did in 1-50 for many classes (looking at you biting jab spamming Templars). Reevaluate your skills and start mixing things up to really find what works best in each situation. Start thinking about tactics to beat the enemies rather than standing face to face. You must be able to interrupt, break crowd control spells and most importantly of all block! 2h sword user mobs will kill you every time if you do not block them and the Covenant area in particular is littered with them.
- There may also come a time when you want to reevaluate your choices of morphs or skill lines. It's better to do this earlier rather than later as the cost rises with every skill point you make just remember leveling a new weapon line will give you very poor damage until it's in its 40's at least. A secondary weapon can open up a whole range of superior options for your character to what you used before. For melee users the damage mitigation or healing attack styles can be highly useful. I found the best way to level them was to switch out to the weapon I wanted to level just before claiming a quest reward. If you get the training trait on it so much the better as this will get it to 50 15-20% faster.
- Start investing in proper equipment (armour, weapons and provisioning) at each level especially if you are soloing. A decent crafter will not charge you the world for player crafted equipment for your level especially if you return to them regularly. Many of them will also give a big discount if you provide the materials which can easily be collected on your travels from nodes and extraction. Be friendly, know what you want (which trait and crafted set bonus - look it up) and promise to return for future business and they will be delighted to take small amounts of money regularly rather than trying to charge you 10,000g for a VR1 piece of armour. You can even offer things like providing them with the traits they need for research from stuff you find or start collecting ingredients for alchemists/enchanters. Raw ore and cloth producing plants are a valuable commodity as they can yield tempers to crafters for item improvement.
- Addons can help a lot with late game content. Things like "Tactical Combat" and "Recount" can help you better understand your abilities and increase your damage per second a great deal which will speed your travels and improve your experience.
Some of this advice may sound "grindy" but really doing World Bosses and the group dungeons was more fun for me than the majority of questing.
